Friday Hangout: Blender Conference for the rest of us

33

So... the Blender Conference is taking place this weekend, but most of you won't be able to attend. How will you be spending this weekend? Do you plan to follow some sessions live, with some local Blenderheads maybe? Which presentations are you most looking forward to? Any other plans? Let them have their party in Amsterdam, we can hang out here! ;-)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

I am not Sure were to start, but I have an idea for a Blender short movie. I have been playing around with blender now for about a year and a half, I still have so much to learn, and it seems to be taking me forever to learn what I need to learn to do what I wanted to do. What I wanted to do is to turn a few books I have read into Blender Movies, so I can have a visual representation of the stories that I have come to adore. Purely on an educational level of course. Trying to teach yourself is no small undertaking, even with all the fantastic tutorials out there. I only wish I had discovered Blender years ago when it first popped into existance.

The First short movie I wanted to make is based on Anne McCaffrey's Collection of short stories in the book, "The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall". More Specifically, and the first of five short stories, titled "The Survey: P.E.R.N." The story consists of only four characters, some space scenes and ultimately the survey of a new world which took place in a ten day excursion to the surface of the third planet in the Rukbat System. Anne has done a wonderful job describing the important scenes of the story. I am hoping to find some people to assist me with this endeavor, as well as teach me. I want to learn everything from Planning a Short Movie, to modeling and texturing the objects of the Story, to the animation of these objects and putting it all together.

  2. I'm going to do some blender tutorials to improve my blender skills :)
Here is my version of the asteroid tutorialfrom blenderguru.com:

  3. Cycles for the win! :)
I can't wait for MLT-implementation and other more sophisticated render techniques ;)
But on simple scenes it's already a lot of fun.

  4. I'm working through Blender Cookie's Low Poly Character Modeling Course!!!  I got it two days ago (PREORDER :P), but now that it finally finished downloading and I got done with school, I can really dig into it!

  5. I am actually on the conference, but it is always fun to reply on these kind of posts :)
Hope the stream will be uploaded on youtube soon after the conference :)

  6. The internet at my house isn't good for live streaming, so I won't be watching the conference this weekend, but I'm hoping that some of the sessions are archived somewhere online so I can see them later.

  7. I took my mom to the conference last year and it was a blast. She isn't really into blender, but she found the talks interesting anyhow. Can't be there this year, but maybe again in the future.

  8. No time for Blender or animation this week. I'm having to figure out my student loans and deciding on repayment plans. I'm also appyling for a FT position at my work (Apple). Been talking to the business team and I might be able to host an introduction to blender workshop that gives people an overview of the program's possibilities.

I also need to figure out how to get a digital file onto film, Digibeta, 35mm, HDCAM, etc. No clue on that stuff. Tonight I have to pmp out some PAL versions of my film for some out of US festivals. I need to fill out a bunch of entry forms and mail out some screener DVDs as well.so yeah haven't had much animation time.

I saw there was a post on that animation Kata from like a year ago (when I saw it). Perhaps if i submit a news story for my film it might get posted this time ( would be 3rd news submission)

  9. Im taking my modeled designs to a 3d printing business.... :D something to give for christmas, maybe next weekend i'll watch the blender channel on youtube to watch the conference
