Free skies is a game concept developed by designers Manuel Scherer and Fabian Schempp over four months as part of their bachelors thesis. The video above was made in blender 2.5 to visualise the game idea, and they are now working on a prototype of the game.

Note: I republished this story as it originally had problems with the video

Manuel writes:

Free Skies is a game we developed with blender over a four month period, including game design, visual development, and finally a trailer. The game is about experiencing an ecosystem in a fantastic world.

As we only had a limited amount of time and wanted to show the potential and look of the game, we decided to make a trailer for it, which showcases how the world and the visuals would feel. We used blender for the entire production, except for the cutting and the text overlays, which were done in After Effects.

  1. I'm definitely more of the adventure/find-new-places type gamer, and this kind of thing is right up my alley! The trailer really looks amazing, absolutely jaw dropping work here.

  2. Fantastic visuals, really engaging style.
The gameplay/story also looks quite intriguing :-)

Oh, and of course I have to ask: Was there a problem with doing the cutting and overlays in Blender?

  3. Just to clarify, vimeo had problem with the video as they thought it was a gameplay video. They wrote:
"We're sorry, but as stated in our Terms and Conditions of Use, on our Community Guidelines
page, and on the upload page itself, gameplay videos are not allowed on
Vimeo Basic or Plus accounts. If you wish to continue using Vimeo to
upload this type of content, you must use Vimeo PRO."

Quite interesting, now they are up again.

    Cheers

  4. Beautiful.  Reminds me of the aesthetics I'd find in some of my favourite games... especially the wind gusts in Okami.  Very inspired stuff.  I'd love to see this get big someday, there are so many great things happening here.

    • cliché? how many floating landscape survival(?) fantasy adventure games, with seemingly endless terrain in all directions have you seen? I've seen 1: this one. Even the herd hunting scene is unique.
