Creating Illustrations with Blender

James Neale of Red Cartel sent in a breakdown video showing how they created a giraffe illustration using Blender and Photoshop. The final illustration was rendered a 6k resolution!

James writes:

Overall we did 4 animals and a hero tree so this video shows the steps we took to create this one. A rewarding and fresh job for us. Had a lot of fun on it, and beer at the end.

  2. I first learned design stuff in Photoshop.  I know it in and out and I somehow manage to keep getting my hands on it.  A lot of my clients like me using Photoshop because they have Adobe products and can use my PSD files.

Saying that, I'm really impressed with what GIMP can do.  I've toyed with the idea of learning how to use it but it's not been pressing.  Either way, both are tools and it's not really the software that makes an artist but how a person uses what they have available to them.

I've started my 3D adventures with Blender.  Even if I got my hands on Maya, ZBrush or the others, I'd probably still use Blender because it's what I know.  Unless forced to conform with industry standards, I'm very content with Blender and am overjoyed by the help the amazing community has given me over the past year.

The giraffe looks incredible and it encourages me to utilize my different tools to get a good looking result.  In the end, that's what it's all about isn't it?

  3. @Aaron You have to be a total noob to think that.. I used much more primitive apps in the 90's and managed to create some amazing work, far better work than most of the photoshop obsessed noobs create these days with all the useless tools.. All you need is some basic tools, airbrush, blur, sharpen, clone, and traditional drawing skills to kick anyone's ass!

    • I do agree that all you really need to create good art is the basic tools, however, the user interface for gimp is a nightmare, the overlapping windows drive me nuts.  I keep on reading that in the next release of the gimp they are finally adding a GUI option similar to photoshop, but until then I understand anyone who would rather use Photoshop over Gimp simply because of the GUI.

  4. While GIMP could easily have handled the post production, Adobe has a stranglehold in professional image editing production. As such, it should be obvious why it was used, simply because people have to know it to get work.

For me, I would have much better seen the entire project handled within blender without the need of either Photoshop OR GIMP to reach the final image.

English Google traduction (sorry) >>> I'll probably surprise you, I have in my possession an old Photoshop 7 that I use much. I was joking, no need to ignite. I was simply pointing out the repetition at the end of the video, as a subliminal advertising. Photoshop is not as accessible than is Blender, financially, unfortunately Gimp is not by far as effective as my old Photoshop.

  6. nice illustration. I would like to use this illustration in a poster. I don’t think I have enough money to pay you for this but I would like to credit your name as the illustrator. I hope you are ok with this. and many many thanks in advance. please reply to me at: [email protected]

    Thank you once again!!!
