Blackhawk VFX

87

Alexander Weide sent us a link to a piece of his recent work. He is a 3D artist who works mainly with Blender and SideFX Houdini. For one project he needed to quickly rebuild and texture a Blackhawk helicopter. As I experienced on my own, often commercial online models are full of modeling problems. Fortunately Blenders modeling workflow is vert efficient and fast. He basically took the helicopter apart and rebuild component by component. The projection painting tool was a great help to build the image based skin texture.

The chopper was then animated and put together in Houdini because it has an outstanding animation and particle systems. For him this was a proof that Blender can be very well used for the modeling task in high-end work environments as it becomes more common recently to use a mix of specialist software packages to tackle specific design problems.

For everybody who is interested to maybe give Houdini a test drive there are two very affordable options.

Free Personal learning edition which has a watermark and image size limitation and the HD version which does not have any of the restictions for 99 $. Of course both versions as personal learning editions do no enable you to exchange your work with the commercial product nor can you use 3rd party plug-ins.

  1. very interesting
now blender is a standard app for a professional workflow!
i'd like somebody could try to do the same with blender rendering tools

  2. Lawrence D’Oliveiro what is your point? A pretty useless comment you wrote.

Johnj, well between what Blender can do and dedicated special FX systems like Houdini
are able to produce is still often a strong difference. Particle system isn't particle system.

But isn't that logical as well? This requires a lot of man power and money to program
while I think building modeling tools is not that complicated.

This explains while often Blender can be used for modeling and if you need more use something different.
I do not render with Blender as the results I need cannot be done with it at all.

But mixing products and using them to their best is a common practice today.

  3. How about redoing the animation and rendering in Blender with either the internal or Cycles renderers? I'm interested how it would have looked then.

The VFX are outstanding, I couldn't tell that it was CG at all, it looked totally realistic at least in small format.

  4. @Alex: Great work, Alex.
@cekuhnen: Blender has become pretty powerful far more than what it used to be. I think there could be a few talented Blender "specialists" now who can duplicate the shot--or render a production quality shot--in Blender, if given the camera tracking data and raw footage and corresponding time and budget. :)

  5. Hi @ olaf, that could be a good idea, but in all my tests and work i figured out that blender is not able to handle these kind of effects in so short time. its all done inbetween 3 weeks including rendering. Blender got alot and mature problem in Compositing -> in VFX layering too. Blender is a great tool for Modeling, it got outstanding speed. But if you be professionell you waste a lot of time with blender if you like to create photorealistic VFX. BUT..:: i think and it was in my intention that everyone is thinking about breaking the barriers! Blender has to get new and better and more options for professional VFX work. For now it has not. so you have to switch.....so its our and the task of the community to build something like the houdini asset system. Its outstanding... because its nodebased, i build a smoke effects in a test scene with all the setups , then i link a new refrence model of my tracking scene and it works without doing additional work. That saves alot of money and time. If you got a job in VFX productions you have to complete it yesterday, so i have to mix all up to get the best performance. -> Blenders modeling and projection painting capabillities are the best i know so i use it for that.

    Wishlist for Blender:

    - abillity for making objects visible and invisible in different renderpasses inside one scene.
    - a real and working asset enviroment with the ability to create assets without the need of learning python
    - nodebased scene management like in houdini or maya.
    - internal Compositing tools for "CG into Footage" Compositing
    - interaction of Fluid simulation with other Simulation -> everything has to interact. a ridgid body and a particle system has to interact between. them
    - Group system for attribute conversation between tools -> one attribute can brought to another objekt by transporting it via particles or fluids for example or even by distance or events.
    - more standart tools not so much easter eggs with python.
-> everyone got another blender -> thats good for developement but worst for beeing stable in production
-> i hope Cycles got Renderlayers if not its useless, because compositing is the key element in todays production

thats my wish list for the next 1 year. i hope we can get some of these points realized.

  6. PS _ - abillity for making objects visible and invisible in different renderpasses inside one scene. -> i mean visible in refractions and reflexions that is one mature BUG. I cannot use it for professional work because this is so bad that i can't use it.

I render in different passes so i need to hide something, in some cases not i need the option to do it....only in reflexions or even refractions.

  7. Lawrence D’Oliveiro,

Yes there is that risk, that is why you don't go that way if you can help it.
That is why open source actually was created for. To make more options available.

Don't mind the nay sayers, they just can't get over their addition to slavery software.

  8. I have to say something about the discussion. ten years ago i was learning my first small 3 euro 3d app. and i believed that i can do with that everything, even a movie today. 5 years ago i believe i can do everything with 3dsmax and Maya, even a full vfx movie. Today i know if i will believe it, i will fail in daily bussines. You have to choose the best tools for the job. And every job is different. If you believe you can do all with one peace of software you are in the wrong bussines. That was hard for me to understand 8 years ago. But its the truth. -> And believe its not because of the software developer, they done a great job.-> its because of the people wich are going into the movie cinemas -> they wanna see the best, they wanna see new, they dont pay for old stuff, they dont pay for effects wich are 8 month old. and so the software developer got a very very hard bussines of beeing the first. and of course i dont pay for any movie without the latest effects. Because old stuff is boring, old effects are not that i have looked for.

-> and because of that no software developer got the power of time(money is not important) to turn some piece of code into a new challenging effect....-> so you have to mix all up

  9. That's how I mostly use blender. Model fixer and Modeler.

Cycles is a nice toy, but using a beta release in production env. is just not done.
Also,... updating all render nodes each time there is a new bug fixed release, with other new bugs, is not really possible. I need my renders to be as I expect them to be.

When, if, blender comes out of beta, then I might consider using it's renderer.

For me being in the visual communication I also need to import STEP (NURBS) files.
CAD/CAM is a large part of models I get from clients. Letting the engineer decide the OBJ detail is mostly not ideal.

It's okay if Blender does not want to go that way, but MAYA and MAX will.
Thinking that the movie industry is a better spot to sit for a 3d app than the communication industry is a cool choice, but I'm not sure how bennificial that will be for blender. For Disney/Pixar there is no reason to switch from renderman to cycles. Maybe for Dreamworks, although I thought Training A Dragon looked super.
ILM Transformers had imax frames of 72 hours per frame, how does cycles handle that?

  10. Uh oh, loads of believers here! I personally used BSD for years and years as I despised Linux (it's for kids and not even a whole system, just a silly kernel). But guess what? I grew up, got tired of software flamewars and went to work.

I use Fusion, Adobe set, Blender and little odds and ends here and there. Blender is good enough (and fast, and familiar - I used it before it became open source) for my 3d needs (modeling, texturing, animation). I guess I could do more in Blender but why would I if I can do it faster somewhere else? When one does stuff for daily living (instead of a hobby), software prices and vendor lock-ins become lot less meaningful. Tools are anyway chosen per project, not for life.

  11. That said, Blender has long ago reached the goal Ton gave it in the 90's - it has made 3d possible to vast masses, rich or poor. Lately it has started to became part of the pipeline for higher end professionals too, driving prices of other 3d software down.

Specialized tools for specialists, general tools for everybody.

  12. wow well done...Houdini has been always the pioneer in special effects.
One thing, you forgot about the helicopter's influence over the smoke, if you see in the real world even peoples' hair gets blown when an helicopter is too close to ground, smoke should be blown away even faster.

  13. ;))) @ AnimaticoideX the first thing I must say I never break a deadline. Deadline was three weeks after the start of the project. On the other side, just the smoke on the right side is digital. Most of the smoke areas in the middle and left of the scene are already in the original Footage. Adaption or change the flow direction is maybe possible but would certainly mean much more than 2 weeks of extra work.

You are the second one of more than 7 thousand viewers wich saw the small difference. But i don't break a deadline and sometimes you have to stop if its working.

  14. cekuhnen

The truth that you just called Blender crap?

    Joeri67
Blender would do just fine as it is able to use opensource renderman to render photorealistic Hollywood type of stuff if it needs, the magic of open source it is that you can modify it to suit your needs try to do that with Houdini crap and you will end up having to pay them to produce anything or be sued for hacking their software.

  15. O MY GOD! excuse me Noone is telling that Blender is crap!!!And if you believe that Blender is a Tool for big bussines, i think you have to wake up for the truth. NO piece of software is the best software that is impossible!!!!And i dont wann speak for blender or Houdini but, go into the stores and buy a Software called Maya or 3dsmax. you only pay alot of money by getting no new tools. You only paying for Name and Bugs that was the Reason i went away from Maya!... i dont believe this lines i read about me. BLENDER is outstanding in modeling Speed, but thats my personal Workflow. And Houdini is best piece of software i know....dont believe it or not-> The First Software on Planet called Prisms 3d was the FIRST every build 3d Software for customers! later it get the Name Houdini. And without Houdini you may don't have a software like Blender because the Movie Young Sherlock Holmes and TRON and Terminator 2 show the world that it is possible to make 3d Animation for Film!Without that Piece of Software the developement hasent happend!

    and one small hint: http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1888&Itemid=348
No blockbuster without Houdini! Think about it.

    From Sidefx.com:

    For over Twenty Years...

In the beginning there were two: Kim Davidson and Greg Hermanovic – animation enthusiasts with a flair for UNIX coding. In 1985 they joined Omnibus, a pioneering company in the then emerging world of computer graphics. They immersed themselves in production, writing their own software and creating visual effects for film and broadcast.

In 1987, with an opportunity to bring 3D graphics to a wider audience, Davidson and Hermanovic created Side Effects Software and released PRISMS. Developed and rigorously tested in production, PRISMS was a procedural graphics application which would lay the groundwork for Houdini...

So...and now i hope we will got a realisitc discussion. Blender is a young child with alot of potential for the future. The potential is not a Masterpiece, the idea is -> its from the community for the community and someday i believe in the next two years, Blender will break through to the big productions!!! because its growing faster every day! And fields of Blender could be, modeling, sculpting or texturing. or something we dont expect!!!

  16. @ cekuhnen

WOW great propaganda you are doing to Blender !

When comparing software packages if you do not know much of Blender then it is better to keep your mouth shut !

I have seen your renders and I do not quite think you know what you are talking about when saying my work can't be DONE IN BLENDER ! Nay !

  17. mm is it possible that we stop this... i only read lines of hate or anger. This is not good. we are getting old and going into the thirties...without saying something bad to someone i have to tell you look at my pinboard animation at my vimeo gallery. This Pinboard VFX cannot, i say again cannot be done in blender because the reflexion passes cannot handle it in Blender, of some mature bugs. For example you cannot say to blender that he has not reflekt the backround on the groundplane if you enable that groundplane and pinboards are reflecting too! That is holy crap in my point of view. We need the abillity to change it in every pass(wich is reflectiv and wich is not and in wich object)!

i believe cekuhnen wanna say that blender got some mature bugs wich are holding blender on the ground level and not in large productions, and that is bitter, but that is the truth.

  18. Fantastic work, alex! Im a working professional and huge fan of blender, although my studio still clings to maya, however. I agree with all the criticsms you have towards blender and i hope the devs are listening, because i believe blender is on the verge of greatness, it just needs a little extra push! :)

  19. Using a lot of houdini here and there's a lot to be said for cross app usage on any project,
    (not just Blender & Houdini)

Can't remember the last time we did a project that didn't involve another app coming to think of it.

A large reason is because you'll rarely get a talent pool large enough nor available enough to completely cover all the bases in one particular app, the other is because if you can pick the best parts out of an app over it's counterpart you can more often than most achieve better results quicker this way.

  20. @ Alex

Great work and just ignore the comments. This is typical fanboy reactions when someone states the honest truth. Like Fahr I work in a Maya/proprietary studio and agree with you as well because I have actually worked on long VFX productions and know what it takes to make the job easier. There are things Blender could do in a VFX pipe but if the process is easier and less painful in another app then that's what we will use because clients care only about you making deadlines.

  21. Look no one has said that Blender is better than Houdini in special effects...The main point here and the truth is that that shot REALLY does not show GREAT Houdini special effects, the clip is nice to watch but the simple smoke (foggy thing) can be easily set up in blender using the turbulence forces with a simple particle-emitter system with Halo material ! and I bet without even using the new smoke simulator anyone can acomplish that, and even better. What about using compositing and the New Blender 2.5 smoke simulator?

So people jumping ahead like Gorillas saying Houdini is the truth..etc etc...clearly shows that they haven't used or study the blender Particles System, period! that foggy shot is a joke if you want to probe that houdini is more poerful, simply it is a joke to jump into that conclusion.

Second what really makes me scratch my head is that Cekumen posted this article, then he defends it by advertisemnt Houdini, saying that his work can't be done in Bllender, trying to intimidate Blender heads and the Blender Community, he allows posts about Houdini prices, so? Is he one of the team behind BlenderNation site? He says this is an "professional news outlet" but it seems he does not see Blender as such? So what do you do here Mister Cekumen, just to throw dirt a bit?

This man is always writing comments against Blender, at CGTALK, here, he defends MAYA, he always find an oportunity to thrown some dirt over Blender's Information Channel in a subliminal way by advertisement other 3D Packages as : This is better than Blender ! He reminds me the movie: SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY !

Sorry but I have to retype this posted by this guy:

"The show was then animated and put together in Houdini because it has and outstanding animation and particle systems as it is also common today to pick the tool which is best for the task."

What task Cekumen? An Helicopter passing by with four fog emitters?
So people, do you really believe this? Do we need Houdini to animate an Helicopter crossing the screen? Is that for him OUTSTANDING ANIMATION and PARTICLE SYSTEMS? Sorry but to me he has to clue what he writes about ! I need to laugh about this, sorry. An I need to cry because he is behind blendernation ! You seen to get along very well with whoever says that Maya or other 3Dsoftware is better than Blender, and this is not your first time.

So Mister Cekumen what's your deal? Make people switch from Blender to other software? Trying to opaque what Blender Developers do is a really dirty thing, and Yes I say the truth and that's what you hate. Flip the page ! Don't be so immature !

  22. "Look no one has said that Blender is better than Houdini in special effects…The main point here and the truth is that that shot REALLY does not show GREAT Houdini special effects, the clip is nice to watch but the simple smoke (foggy thing) can be easily set up in blender using the turbulence forces with a simple particle-emitter system with Halo material ! and I bet without even using the new smoke simulator anyone can acomplish that, and even better. What about using compositing and the New Blender 2.5 smoke simulator?"

-> m sorry? that was a fluid simulation wich are driving particles wich are rendered as volumens -> a turbulence field dont got the abilities for that kind of detail in motion in blender..and i believe it because i was testing that!

And to all the rest i have to say. now this articles is on the houdini facebook page too because someone has linked it on facebook, so you can imagine that houdini users read this article too.

please to everyone, there is no best software out there, there is no best client there is no best project, and there is no best user !!! to think there is something best out there is brainless sorry, and noone ever told that this is best..or that is best....

    i can't read in anymore.....

    bye

  23. Volume? Did you know that Blender has Volumetric Material? uhmmm.... Also everyone can say: Yes I applied the square of a super polynomial node and rendered in a virtual integrative angle....bla bla.....but the result is not better than a smoke simulation within Blender, probably a better shot may show something but that one no my friend. If you read the first comments many said about making the same with Blender Cycles, we all believe that the same result can be achieved in Blender quite easily, that's all my point.

Simply put...it is obvious that there are much less BlenderFans than BlenderHaters :) There is no reason for this propaganda inside BlenderNation.

  24. @AnimaticoideX

Uh-huh, this can't be for real. Did you understand what Alex said? He said that fluid simulation was used to drive particle simulation which was then rendered as a volume. You can't use smoke simulation to drive particles in Blender as all simulations are separate, they don't interact in Blender. And smoke simulation of sufficient domain resolution is an overkill for a shot like that, for computation time alone which doesn't allow for tweaks. But rough smoke sim that is used to drive clouds of particles with additional forces to increase the detail sounds pretty reasonable approach to me.

Venomenous fanboys around Blender and other open source don't cease to surprise me. How can anyone who has ever worked professionally believe that some software is better than all the rest? Each software has strong points which are then used according to production on hand. Results matter, not tools.

And to mirror Boots, please, do make something that proves your point.

  25. @Joeri: how about importing DXF? I've imported engineering models from Solidwork which were exported as DXF and then imported into Blender.

  26. @AnimaticoideX: you're probably right. There's probably a lot of astroturfing going on here on behalf of CG software manufacturers who are losing users in droves, maybe even by professional astroturfing companies. I'm not saying Blender is the best tool for everything, but I'm pretty sure you can do most things at 95% to 100% of the quality of most commercial packages if you take the time to learn it, at a FRACTION of the price.

Also, I don't buy their arguments that you can do things faster with Houdini/Maya etc. Blender is notorious for not being user friendly because it's optimized for workflow and getting things done in the shortest amount of time.

It's not so much the one time license I balk about with commercial software. It's the continuous upgrade cycle where you keep having to pay though your nose. After a while this gets frustrating.

  27. @ Olaf

yeap...astroturfing is the right word. Actually someone said that this article has been linked to a Houdini Facebook site? This whole thing looks to me like an intentional cheap propaganda.
So they want to hear Blender Heads saying WOW ! WOW ! Houdini ! Clap Clap ! If that were the case I would honestly admit so, but that foggy scene is nothing that Blender can't handle, trust me on that one.

It Is not my intention to hurt anyone, but I keep a very close eye on how blender users have grown since 2008 till today 2011, and it has been quite substantial, otherwise I wouldn't be spending my time trying to master it.

To me with all my respect, this article has no sense at all ! Bringing a poor shot made on Houdini to a Blender Community to supposedly show what Blender can't do? ( which by the way is not true )--->>>> CAMPAIGN ! Professional astroturfing ! Again: Someone here is sleeping with the enemy.....eyes open !

  28. omg please blendernation stop this thread i read alot of unprofessionalism...in houdini you dont use standart tools...houdinis power is not a standart tool...you build your own tools..like programming but without that need of programming is the most userfriendly app for TDs i know.........i cannot read shit sorry. and please dont compare maya with houdini...!!! that are two worlds... .......That was my last post because i cant read non-knowledge every day.. sorry...but i cant read it anymore.

  29. @ Alex: It's really sad to see these reactions to your fantastic shot and breakdown. Certainly not all Blender users are like that, usually the quality of the comments on Blendernation is much higher. Your opinion on the capabilities of Blender is much appreciated. Once again, really fantastic work and interesting workflow using Houdini + Blender.

  30. @ Alex
I'm not sure if they can lock these discussions. This one left stupidity and sailed fast into absurdity some time ago. Interesting sampling of Blender userbase I would say.

There really seems to be those who innocently believe that the actual (extremely pragmatic) professionals choose their software based on religion. Actually they choose it based on utility and don't much care if it's open or closed source. If they don't use open source it means open source tools are not usable enough compared to competition. Simple as that.

  31. @ hevovem
    @ docbrown

Again, the shot is great, I have said it many times, Alex did a GREAT JOB, there are not reactions against his work at all. What we are trying to clarify is very simple: """""""That shot can easily be done in Blender as well""""""""

It is quite simple and the heading and description of this thread simply misleads new Blender enthusiasts, making them believe that things like that can't be achieved in Blender, which is TOTALLY WRONG !

That's the main point, is a simple and honest feedback.....Also posting links like "NO BLOCKBUSTER WITHOUT HOUDINI" clearly shows that this article was presented as a mediocre propaganda towards Houdini.....No one needs a special brain to notice it :)

  32. quoting AnimaticoideX
"I have said it many times, Alex did a GREAT JOB, there are not reactions against his work at all."

scroll up top his previous entry and you see: "Bringing a poor shot made on Houdini..."

just give it up already, please

  33. "A poor shot" if you pretend it to be considered as a master Sample Demo piece to show Houdini tools over Blender ! NAY ! Man please do not insist !

***beside that, it is a nice average shot that can be made on ANY 3D software package including BLENDER ! :)***

  34. @AnimaticoideX

please think about what you say. No one told ever, and special not i, that this was a master sample! And please stop that that discussion.

If you think this is an average and poor shot, i have to tell you in clear way, think about that what you got on your website and then compare it, and personally..think about how you speak about the work of other's! because i could believe that you dont know what you are talking about.!

i hope you think about it in still moment, you can write me a mail if you like to say sorry and i will forget that, but your lines are not the fine english taste.

    Thanks i wish you a nice day/future

    Bye

  35. [email protected]
i don't think this thread must be stopped
i think that is very useful
how can we understand if we don't write what we think?
of course i think that the fact you used blender preferring it to maya or 3dmax is very important
and i think that people who don't appreciate you are totally wrong
few years ago nothing like this could have been done, and blender was used here
the wishlist is a precious present for me: we must remember that even ton did not want to do something killing the other 3d software, but every chance to do new upgrades must be studied
so i thank you a lot, not every post here is full of hate :-)

    @ everybody
if somebody knows how to do the same with blender, please stop posting words: post a render, instead of the words ;-)

  36. @ Alex, don't be stubborn please ! Do not try to detour the main subject from its main idea. Bringing up my website material and asking me to email you "IN SECRET FOR APOLOGIES" clearly shows that you are very upset about your own pitfall and failure of this cheap marketing strategy towards Houndini, and VERY ARROGANT PERSON.

YOU DO NOT WANT TO ACCEPT THE TRUE. ONCE AGAIN: THAT IS FAIRLY EASY TO CREATE IN BLENDER ! Period!
Do I need to apologize "IN SECRET" for saying that? If I had to do it I would do it publicly PERIOD ! You must be kidding me right?

Look it seems that you don't know what to do now after realizing that your shot simply has put Houdini down in you social Network? Facebook or whatever? against Blender?, don't take it personally, ( as I know this is your intention as an alternative way to escape from your mistake)

I repeat this: the SHOT IS GOOD ! WELL DONE ! CONGRATULATIONS ! But if your intention was to show here HOUDINI's outstanding particle System and Animation Tools over Blender, then " IT IS A POOR SHOT" it is not convincing at all. A word of advice to you Alex, if you really want us to think differently and say WOW ALLELUIA HOUDINI, then you need to push yourself much farther than a simple Helicopter crossing the screen with a few fog emitters blowing particles, Come on Alex? Realize of this pitfall ! Be more realistic ! May be an earthquake with a building falling down lots of dust, fire, debris going everywhere....may be we could understand better Houdini's abilities, BUT NO THIS !

Never expect people will write what you want to hear, (specially here many know Blender very well)... learn to respect people's thinking and do not be so frustrated about this huge Houdini's Pitfall, let it go man, do something more complicated if you have that purpose of showing Houdini over Blender man !

OHHH....I will send you my "SECRET APOLOGIES" with Santa Claus ! Ha ha ha !

  37. then please do it.;) you are comparing a apple with a car two different things. but both are objects in far point of view.

in dont wanna upset you sorry for that.

wish you a nice day. good bye

  38. Thanks for the breakdown Alex; it's always interesting to see how work is done at the sharp end of the industry and the final result was excellent.

  39. I am in the process of helping setup a small startup for commercial and tv. Came here to learn what Blender has to offer, but after seeing how vile Blender users can be to other people who choose not to use apps outside of Blender has really turned me off. At least the XSI community has been friendly to us even when talking about other apps like Cinema4D and Lightwave.

Glad I learned this now then later down the road.

Alex; if relocation was in our budget I would have gladly offered you a chance at an interview. Great work!

  40. This thread is beyond hilarious! anyways....

@ Alex, nice shot, but truly not a showcase for Houdini. But thanks for wishes to help
    blender..

@ AnimaticoideX - you are right about this shot, but you could be more polite to this
    man.

@ Ablefx - enjoying buying xsi and Houdini. I'm sure they will be nice to you when
you pay 8 thousand per seat.

  41. @AbleFx
Open source has the tendency to gather the absurd end of the bunch, Blender is no different.

I would recommend that if you intend to use Blender in pro setting (that is, with other software) you should avoid looking Blender related discussions, vocal zealots are quick to drag them down. Forum (blenderartists) is slightly better than this, though.

The reason why paying software communities are better in this regard is because people there are pros and therefore pragmatic, they only care about end results and quality of tools. While Blender is very good it's community is mostly made of hobbyists who have no production experience (commercial or funded or art school) and who tend to exaggarate it's virtues.

Problems is about users only (and maybe only a vocal minority of them), Blender developers are very nice! I got particle improvements for a project I was working on simply by reporting bugs and asking features by email. Lead dev answered me about planned scope for the compositor some years ago (which is why I got Fusion). Ride is smooth, just ignore the users.

  42. @ AbleFX

Your post look much more like one of the many astroturfing members filtered in here.

@Alex: Thanks for the offer? That sounded very fake Alex ! Don't lie to yourself.
I bet you are the same AbleFX ! ha ha ha !

This article has become REALLY HILARIOUS.....now we are going to start reading posts like this:

Hello I am the owner of a big Studio and after seeing this thread I am going to put Blender in the Toilet !

These astroturfings are very professionals, aren't they? :)

  43. @ AnimaticoideX
you say that his work does is not a good demonstration of the abilities of Houdini, well mate the same can be said about your work and how it represents Blender.

  44. Nice Discussion, but the main Statement of Alex is correct!

Currently Blender is not designed for complex(!) and heavy VFX Shots and the professional Workflow for Live Action Footage Intergration in a Film- and Cinema related Production Pipeline.

All current significant Blender Movie Projects are Full CG, Cartoons and not Photorealism or without realistic Live Footage.

    Reasons:
    - poor, slowly photorealism Render, Global Illumination, Radiosity and Renderpass management are a BIG Bugs...

The Particle or Fluid System is also not able to handle 2K Full HD or 4K Film Resolution in an acceptable Time.
    .
Open Source is an abstruse argument which don't allows to compare it with other 3D Packages, the Software Price is the lowest component i a Film Movie Budget.

Bu: there was an announce at Siggraph for a new Open Blender Project -Science-Fiction Film "Mango"- so this seems the start: Blender for VFX Development !?

  45. AnimaticoideX aka Armando Guinand aren't you the person who sold on your website AGMlabs.com Goosh's Package Man as your work, violating his interlectual property and copyrights when the original creator Javier Solsona contacted you?

In plain words you are a tief.

You obviously like to decorate yourself with the work of others - which is also why you got banned from Blendernation.

    http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?208416-agmlabs-stealing-models&highlight=amglabs

I herby remind you again to stay professional and restrain yourself from spreading lies and accusations.
At the end you only continue to make yourself look more like a fool.

If you have a valid point feel free to express it in proper ways in contrast to the way you approach it
as you can see by how users here react to what you write.

  46. Alex I am sorry for what Armando writes and how he behaves here.

However I hope you see that there is also a lot of positive comment towards your work
less about his attitude and non-sense.

  47. @cekuhnen

i got no problem with constructive criticism;) but sometimes there are some people wich pisst off because they see there is someone out there with maybe more experience.

no problem, we got less time to think about to much;)

wish you a nice day claas and thanks

  48. After going to agmlabs.com and following the videos to the youtube channel I realized that the other alias AnimaticoideX went under was blenderguy2008 and upon googling found an older bn post were he behaved in a similar matter and Bart had to step in.

Alex, this guy is a seasoned troll and I am sorry you had to get caught up in it. You have a great career ahead of you so keep up the good work.

  49. Constructive criticism is great - lies and bigotry behaviors not really.

I decided to publish what you wrote me because it is a great example to show how Blender can be integrated inside a modern workflow which also others here appreciate to get educated about.

I think having a realistic opinion about what a software can do and not is very important while software evangelism hardly opens any door.

  50. @cekuhnen

As always the truth makes you so UNGRY cekuhnen ! Take it easy my boy... You look like a mad kiddy cat ! You can't even type correctly. RELAX ! Shaking Hands? You act funny when you hear the truth ! That's your problem !...banning? names? sales? websites? thief? ha ha what the heck do you talk about? Is it part of the astroturfing? Or do you want to change the topic about you advertaising HOUDINi here ? Sleeping with the enemy and the enemy shows up awaken by the truth !!!!...ha ha ha

package man for Sale? You are hilarious misleading people to believe so !

Well I invite you to show here to whom this model was sold to ! If you fail in doing so then you have probed to the comunity who makes stories, you have become a big troll dominated by anger and envy, feeded by whatever people tells you to do....you are a HUMAN PUPPET ! Easy to manipulate, you don't seek for facts, you just go for whoever tells you to do..specially as Solsona who works on Maya ! AM I WRONG? Again you get along very well with whoever is outside of Blender...Then ..what do you do here? Sorry asking you twice but it seems you have not answer for that.

You lack of common sense Cekuhnen, All information about business, phone numbers, address is accesible because I want it to be like THAT ! ....Actually every post I make here links to my website, and my Domain is not anonymous BECAUSE I WANTED IT TO BE LIKE THAT in my REGISTAR Settings !...Anyone can google it ! Nothing to hide ! So Don't play to Mister JAMES BOND Cekuhnem? believing that you have discovered sensitive information to gain credibility from the comunity is a big lie to yourself!

Otherwise I would write under MisterXXX with no link ! Don't you think so? You make yourself look like a fool puppet !

I am fully aware that people no liking my comments would search my website in the first place, then come back and write some crap about it !!! HELLO????? That's very predictable and you haven't done anything out of my expectations, that's why I love to play chess ! I always try to think ahead of what my enemy can do !

( I am still waiting for someone coming here posting my $60.000 profit made on my CGTALK thread ! ha ha ha )

DO NOT FORGET THAT ALL INFORMATION IS ACCESIBLE BECAUSE I WANT IT TO BE LIKE THAT, NO BECAUSE YOU HAVE DISCOVERED ANYTHING ! ....
Actually I won't be upset at all if you posted here my phone numbers, adresses, domain expiration day etc etc If that makes you feel like JAMES BOND ha ha ha....

To probe to the comunity how fool you are, just google "whois blender.org" or "whois any website" then the owner will show if it has been set as Public. If Private then it won't show any info ! VOILA ! ! Mister James BOND...so? what are you going to do now? Give me a visit? Please do it goofy !

@Toho I think your comment offends more to Alex than myself ! "THE SAME CAN BE SAID ABOUT YOUR SITE....? So what does it really mean? That Alex work is as bad as mine? Dam...better to have you as an enemy than as a friend ! ( By the way I do not post my work anywhere ! You are the one searching my site...then that's not my problem if you do not like it ! That was very funny ! :)

  51. @cekuhmen

Well as always ! If we read that thread then.....

who controls that thread ? Hello???? CEKUHMEN !

    Who controls this article?...HELLO??? CEKUHNEN

Who Published this article? ...HELLO??? CEKUHNEN

Who is creating personal attacks? like:

"it is a pretty bad website on it's own - looks quite armature.

Since he sells the work you can probably file a complained against him.
Isn't there such a system in the US?

When you publish your work under a free license I think his recycling when
it violates your license agreement is unlawful."

    HELLO???? CEKUHMEN

No matter what i say....if someone emails you saying: hey this guy kidnapped a baby...then you will go as a PUPPET and post so without searching for the facts, because your anger and frustration against my business makes you act like a FOOL !

  52. AnimaticoideX I remind you again to stop trolling stop attacking other people and then complain about when people tell you the truth.

  53. @ cekuhnen

Learn to admit your mistakes and pitfalls ! Stop making stories as a counter attack ! Do not dismiss what I said,

show here a probe to whom I sold Package Man and that will give you the CREDIBILITY THAT YOU EXPECT FROM THE COMMUNITY, you make mistakes over mistakes because what you said is a huge LIE ! And you know That Mister James Bond AKA The puppet !

Be a man, stop searching for my REGISTRAR Domain Details as they are PUBLIC to everyone DUMMY ! Be more professional if you are in charge of threads and community Forums THEN ACT AS SUCH !

POSTING HOUDINI PRICES AND PROPAGANDA USING A SHOT THAT DOES NOT EVEN FIT AS SHOWCASE FOR IT OVER BLENDER HAS BEEN A HUGE MISTAKE DISPLAYING YOUR LACK OF INTELLIGENCE and MARKETING SKILLS.......

This is the main topic here, no about DOMAIN REGISTRAR DETAILS, AND STORIES. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LOOK GOOD, THEN EXPLAIN WHY YOU ADVERTISE HOUDINI IN A SUBLIMINAL WAY, TRYING TO MAKE PEOPLE SWITCH FROM BLENDER TO HOUDINI AT BLENDERNATION ! That clearly show how dirty, betrayer and low you are. PUPPET ! You simply do what the competition tells you to do ....PERIOD ! Mister James BOND !

  54. @Alex,
Thanks for showing the breakdown, great work! I for one find it refreshing to see how different people/studios use different software packages to come up with a final product. I mean, in the end it's all smoke and mirrors. I think the more people realize that Blender can fit very nicely into a production pipeline of bigger projects, the more it will be adopted by larger studios. I think that would help the development and future of blender in big ways! So thanks!

    @cekuhnen,
Same as above, thanks for posting articles like this.

    @AnimaticoideX,
Hard to read your comments, overpowering visual image of a 3 year old throwing a temper tantrum is all I can see. You need to go hug someone.

  55. AnimaticiodeX this is the last warning to stop your trolling on this forum which also includes attacking members of this community. I am not the only person who thinks that your actions are way beyond any reasonable behavior.

If you have a problem with me - please use a different medium than this news outlet to address your opinion and thoughts.

  56. I do not have a problems with you Cekuhmen you are the one chasing me everywhere !.....you were the one POSTING HERE THAT WE sold Package Man....AND YOU know that you LIED ! So why are you so afraid to show proof of what you just said? If we got to Court they will ask you that as well ! There is no offense to anyone here ! At all !

So? Once again.....where is the PROOF of what you just said ....I AM STILL WAITING !

Please, take your time and support what your big TONGUE said ! Be RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS !

...or do you waffle words in Forums and then you ban people when you find yourself like a cat in a corner?

  57. http://agmlabs.com/lighter.php
    http://agmlabs.com/pmantoon.php
    http://agmlabs.com/pman3d.php

    @AnimaticodideX,
Google "agmlabs & package man" and the first three results lead to your pages. The pages are identical to your other pages where you are selling rigged models, but these are "No available for download" (but there is commented code referring to payment method in the same location). I'm no Sherlock Holmes, but seems obvious that you were indeed selling it, got caught, but now vehemently deny ever having done so. Pages on your own website give enough "proof".

Consider the fact you didn't have the foresight to completely remove the pages that hint highly that you were selling the model and rig unethically, and the childish comments you're making here on this forum. You're definitely not making a good argument for yourself.

    @Original Topic,
I'd really hope to see how more people are using Blender in bigger production projects. I know recently I read that uv texuturing and some cloth dynamics were used in this film: http://www.dontbeafraidofthedark.com/

  58. hej excuse me animaticoidex time is over, I CANT READ YOUR SHIT ANYMORE, GO HOMe and write a book but not there. You behave like a 12 years old child!!!!!!

_> "I do not have a problems with you Cekuhmen" ????

ARE YOU know what you writing? do you remember it? -> "So? Once again…..where is the PROOF of what you just said ….I AM STILL WAITING !" I THINK you lost your mind...and that is no place for kiddi shit..sorry for that. And i hope i hope you will get wat you need! a doctor maybe or something else.... good bye

  59. Someone here needs a Doctor and its no me at all.

    DON'T lose your temper Alex,

AGAIN: WHERE IS PROOF OF ME SELLING PACKAGE MAN? CEKUHNEN IS LYING AND YOU REPEAT WHAT HE SAYS BECAUSE YOU ARE VERY WEAK.

MANY PEOPLE KNOW ME, AND IT WAS CLEAR THAT I RE-RIGGED PACKAGE MAN FOR BLENDER ANIMATION CHALLENGE LONG LONG AGO WHEN I WON THE COMPETITION. NEVER FOR SALE AND YOU KNOW IT, AND CEKUHMEN KNOWS IT TOO BUT THEY JUST HATE THE MONEY I MAKE USING BLENDER WITHOUT STUDYING ARTS BECAUSE I AM A COMPUTER ENGINEER.....AM I WRONG CEKUHMEN?

JONATHAN WILLIANSON AT CGCOOKIES MUST BE READING THIS SOMEWHERE, BECAUSE HE ALSO STARTED THIS DIRTY CAMPAIGN !

FIRST: PACKAGE MAN IS FREE AND VERY OLD...WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY IT? DUMMY !

SECOND: I CAN MAKE GOOD QUALITY MODELS AND I SALE THEM FOR VERY LOW PRICES, AND THAT SEEMS TO BOTHER MANY ON THESE FORUMS AS WELL AS OTHERS AS JONATHAN WHO ALSO MAKES MONEY USING BLENDER, AM I RIGHT CEKUHMEN? ISN'T IT A COINCIDENCE? NOW ALEX HAS JUMPED HERE SAYING: YOU DON'T REMEMBER? I BET HE HAS NO CLUE WHAT HE TALKS ABOUT.

I CAN MODEL, RIG AND ANIMATE WHATEVER I WANT TO. NO NEED TO STEAL ANYTHING, AND I HAVE PROBED IT LONG AGO. ACTUALLY THIS IS A QUICK DEMO MODEL- ANIMATION:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Mq5hEdhq-o

SO? ONCE AGAIN: SHOW PROOF OF ME SELLING PACKAGE MAN.....THAT'S THE QUESTION AND THE TOPIC CEKUHMEN BROUGHT IT IN TO THIS ARTICLE, AND HE IS NOT A MAN ENOUGH TO SHOW PROOF, HE IS A MAN FOR BANNING AND DELETING COMMENTS....WHAT AN EASY PATH RIGHT? I DEFEND MYSELF WITH MY NAILS AND THEY HAVE ALL THE WEAPONS RIGHT?

EVEN MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL SHOWS SOMETHING TOO DIFFERENT TO WHAT YOU SAY AND MAKE THE COMMUNITY BELIEVE, SEE THE STATISTICS, AND REALIZE WHAT THE HECK YOU GUYS ARE DOING.

HE WANTS TO BAN , OF COURSE BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT COWARDS DO. YOU HAVE SEARCH REGISTRAR, DETAILS, TALK CRAP OF MY SITE, MY SKILLS, LYING ABOUT ME....SO WHAT ELSE ARE YOU GOING TO INVENT?

LET ME GUESS ! BAN RIGHT? AND DELETE ALL MY COMMENTS RIGHT?

SHOW PROOF OF WHAT YOU SAID, THAT'S IT GUYS. I AM WAITING..........

  60. AnimaticoideX,

I do not think, in case what you did was all that ok, that the original creator of that character would have started that thread at all. I think that very much speaks for itself. I would also not have brought it up incase from the start you would have been more respectful to other members here.

I have no personal issue when you make money with selling rigs and Blender models only because you are an engineer.
Why should I? If you are successful with that side job then congratulations to you but stop using this always as a reason to attack others and state that everybody even at CGsociety is jealous about you and your skills.

But what I noticed is your extrem harsh tone and personal attacking approach across various boards.
All I simply ask you for is respect this news outlet, restrain yourself from attacking other persons, and please spellcheck what you write as.

BTW I am not the owner of this website and thus cannot ban anybody - so stop projecting that towards me and address it to the owner of this website.

  61. @ CEHUHMEN

AM I DREAMING OR WASN'T YOU WHO WROTE THIS:

"AnimaticoideX aka Armando Guinand aren’t you the person who sold on your website AGMlabs.com Goosh’s Package Man as your work, violating his interlectual property and copyrights when the original creator Javier Solsona contacted you?

In plain words you are a tief.

You obviously like to decorate yourself with the work of others – which is also why you got banned from Blendernation."

SO IT MEANS THAT YOU MAKE FALSE ACCUSATIONS BECAUSE YOU THINK SO? OR BECAUSE SOLSONA ( WHO WORKS 100% ON MAYA OPENED THAT THREAD? THAT'S IT? WEREN'T YOU ABLE TO SEARCH MY SITE AND SEE FOR YOURSELF WHERE PACKAGE MAN WAS BEING SOLD TO SEE IF THAT WAS TRUTH IN THE FIRST PLACE?

I WOULDN'T HAVE MINDED MUCH WHAT YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGH. IT IS PEOPLE'S CHOICE TO BELIEVE HIS VERSION OR BELIEVE MINE. BUT WAFFLING WORDS OF INFAMY BECAUSE YOU ARE UPSET ABOUT THIS HOUDINI THREAD MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE A REAL MISERABLE MAN! IF YOU HAVE NOT PROOF BETTER TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT SPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A MODERATOR OF THE FORUM.

AS I SAID BEFORE I RE-RIGGED THAT FREE CHARACTER TO BE USED IN BLENDER ANIMATION CHALLENGE AFTER WINNING THE PREVIOUS ENTRY...THAT'S IT. I DO NOT NEED TO SELL IT ! I EVEN GIVE CHARACTERS FOR FREE MUCH BETTER THAN THAT ONE AS MY PTERODACTYL, SO IT IS A MATTER OF COMMON SENSE TO FIND THE TRUTH.

DON'T LIE TO YOURSELF CEKUHMEN, YOU DO THINGS INTENTIONALLY WHEN YOU DON'T LIKE THE PERSON OR THE BUSINESS ! YOU PLAY SO DIRTY THAT YOU KEEP SAYING: "you are attacking other people here"------------ NO !!!, I AM ATTACKING YOU DIRECTLY BECAUSE YOU ARE A BIG LIER, I AM DEFENDING MYSELF OF YOUR INFAMY AND DIRTY TONGUE.

AT THIS POINT I AM NOT SURE IF YOU ARE A BAD PERSON OR A WEAK DUMMY PUPPET ( BECAUSE SOLSONA WORKED OR STILL WORKS FOR PIXAR AND YOU WANTED TO LICK HIS FEET A BIT? IS IT IT MR CEKUHMEN? SAME AS JONATHAN WILLIAMSON? ISN'T IT A BIG COINCIDENCE? ANGER OF FAME AT THE COST OF ANYTHING?

  62. Armando, I am not the only person on this forum who does not agree with your style of attacking other personal and providing rather condescending comments instead of providing what is considered constructive critique.

Let me remind you that it was also you who in previous posts attacked my person to the depth that you even took the time to leave comments for embedded images used as the thumbnails requiring the admin here to step in and put an end to your behavior.

All I approached you with was were requests to be reasonable as also asked by other members here towards you.
Everything you replied with are personal accusations against my person and users here - filled with all-caps and spelling errors.

I am out of this thread you can continue to steam off and tell the world that everybody is wrong and you are right.
Do you want another "HOW *NOT* TO RESPOND TO CRITIQUE" like at CGSociety.

Do you really want to continue this here?

At the end it is your choice.

  63. @ cekuhmen

DO NOT GENERALIZE ....STOP LYING TO THE COMUNITY MISTER ADMINISTRATOR, YOU WANT TO SMOOTH OUT YOUR BAD ACTIONS AND FALSE ACCUSATIONS BY SPREADING UNRELATED TOPICS, RIGHT?

AGAIN, YOU DO NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS, YOU KEEP TALKING IN CIRCLES LIKE A KIDDY CAT IN A CORNER. now you have just brought in the cgtalk thread " how not to respond etc" i said that before, not too late you or someone was going to bring it out to confuse the main topic, no man enough to recognize your own errors: AGAIN:

WHERE IS PROOF OF ME SELLING PACKAGE MAN, MR CEHUKMEN? THAT'S A SIMPLE QUESTION !

BTW: YOUR POSTS ARE FULL OF SPELLING ERRORS AS WELL, YOU REALLY DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO RIGHT?
Domain Registrar, spelling errors, package man, cgtalk, everyone agrees that you attack, come on Mister Cekuhmen keep on topic:

"WHERE IS PROOF OF ME SELLING PACKAGE MAN, MR CEHUKMEN? THAT'S A SIMPLE QUESTION!"

  64. AGAIN:

“WHERE IS PROOF OF ME SELLING PACKAGE MAN, MR CEHUKMEN? .....I HOPE YOU AREN'T AFRAID TO ADMIT PUBLICLY THAT YOU DON'T HAVE ANY? That you just wanted to be Solsona's Buddy because he works for Pixar?

    UHM?

I AM NICE, SO I WILL GIVE YOU ANOTHER CHANCE TO ANSWER:

“WHERE IS PROOF OF ME SELLING PACKAGE MAN, MR CEHUKMEN?

  65. Animaticoitus, you´re the biggest tool I´ve seen today. You´re one of the guys where you ask yourself, is this guys really for real? Because there aren´t many people that pathetic in this world. You critique other guys for their artwork, whereas yours is mediocre at best, and you criticize people for their spelling, even though you yourself have made obvious spelling mistakes. Go get a life..

  66. No problem Sankesong, but I am still waiting for the answer of this big mouth man.
One lesson needs to be taught here:

DO NOT MAKE FALSE ACCUSATIONS IF YOU HAVE NO PROOF ! Didn't you learn that when you were a KID?
The community is not stupid, they read and they analyze what is going on here. It is very easy to notice that this guy is a big mouth PUPPET manipulated by competitors, he likes to decorate himself to look graceful and smart ! Using his own words to avoid being offensive !

Second: How in the world would you advertise HOUDINI here? Displaying prices and miss leading people to believe that that shot can't be done in Blender? Do you know how much effort is invested developing Blender?

How do you think investors and people who donates money to the Blender Project would feel when reading that this big mouth man at blendernation is advertising other 3D software trying to intentionally make people drop off Blender Package?

ohh...who BANS him? he proceed with false statements and then drop all the faults over others? Right ! Who BANS HIM UH?

This man is a simple soul sold to the competition ! PERIOD. he is a betrayer and a big mouth man.

So,? I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE ANSWER CEKUHMEN !

PS: snakesong: you talk about spelling errors right? so did you say tool? well thanks for that my friend.

  67. @AnimaticoideX
i don't understand what are you speaking about
may be you are a good modeler and animator
    i don't care
could you stop writing about this and post a render in which you redo what ale did?
if you are not able let's wait for someone able

on 10/4/2011 i will be 50 years old, and i am a teacher
it's boring for me to read here the same silly discussions i here at school between young boys
it's not a thread about who is bigger
    sorry 4 my poor english

  68. @ johnj

Well obviously you haven't read this thread in fuLl Mister John. I am not talking about Alex work, what I said about his shot was that it was not definitely a good showcase to show Houdini over Blender, Alex became very upset and that was the end of the story,he brought my website etc etc no big deal, but I am still making a simple question to this big mouth man: Cekuhmen !

If you are 50 years old, and a teacher, I guess you should know that you shouldn't make FALSE STATEMENTS against other people if you HAVE NO PROOF and much less if it is something unrelated to you. Those actions could easily get you in big trouble. Then this would be a good lesson for your kids to learn and read !

Here is the thread where I re-rigged Package Man, show me where did I sell it !
    http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?198390-Package-Man-Blender-2.5&highlight=package+man

SO; “WHERE IS PROOF OF ME SELLING PACKAGE MAN, MR CEHUKMEN? WE DO NOT WANT TO THINK THAT YOU DO WHAT SOLSONA'S TELLS YOU TO DO OR THE HOUDINI TEAM ASK YOU TO POST.

  69. This discussion ends now.

I'm sorry I did not have time to step in earlier and I just found one stinking mess here..

@AnimaticoideX: you should not have been called a thief, and I have talked to Claas about that. At the same time, you're rude. You have received warnings and a ban for your behaviour here in the past - don't make me do that again.

@everyone else: stay on topic. Fight your wars somewhere else.
