3D Camera Tracking of Danbo with Experimental Blender Tomato Branch

11

Alex Aylesbury animated a cardboard robot named Danbo for his 5-year old daughter and describes the entire process in detail.

Alex writes:

Recently we've had so many development contracts it seemed like we'd not released any new games or paper toys for aeons. However our R & D had not ground to a halt. We'd been playing around with experimental branches of Blender mainly the Cycles Renderer and the Camera Tracking Tomato Branch. We'd also been working on some new games and paper toys but nothing ready to release.

Our Daughter was about to turn 5 and she just loves a lovable little cardboard robot called Danbo. We decided to bring the character to life and make her a little animation of Danbo moving around on the coffee table in our lounge. For those of you who just want to see the result, below you will find a couple of youtube videos of the final animation and our first little test. For those who are more interested then read on and we'll outline how we made the video.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

    ¿¡!?
How did you made that ballon float like that?
Come on man, you really gotta teach us how to do that, do simple tutorial, please.
    Thank you.

  2. Hi! Basically your video looks quite nice, the tracking is well done etc.
Unfortunately it still does look kind of artificial. This might be partly due to the lighting, but I guess mainly due to missing or inapropriate reflections (i.e. the balloon reflecting on the table) as well as depth of field and motion blur (your work is always in focus and totally sharp, regardless of it's distance and motion).
If you can improve those things, your future works will be even better.

    regards

  3. Quiet nice, still I would like to see the camera moving freely instead of staying in a single point, thats when I got troubles using Voodooo

  4. @ all those who are saying it isn't or should be more realistic:

#1) its a short animation made for a 5 year old ... would you gripe at the people who make tele tubbies? The dude took the time to make something his daughter would like, Major uber dad points there!

#2) it reminds me of the augmented reality apps that were going around several months back, i didn't hear any one griping about those.

The effect was very good, I enjoyed it. Good work.

  5. @elcrapocrew:
critique is what this business is all about. What have been said here have been said in a very friendly and helpful tone, and I can nothing but agree.

  6. Thanks for all the comments, as @elcrapocrew said it was done in 24hrs for a 5yr old so there are lots of issues with it. I agree with the missing reflections so have added them in the link below, you guys sure are keeping me honest. The camera is moving around a fair bit but we only had a few hours so didn't want to take any risks moving around too much.

I'll do a tutorial on the balloon (it was very easy).

    Thanks
    Alex.
