Blendswap Model Contest

14

BlendSwap is hosting their first ever contest. Prizes are some cool Blender e-books.

Nicholas Royer writes:

Hello, ladies and gentlemen!

I’d like to welcome you to the first ever Blendswap model competition. In this new opportunity for Blender artists, we’re offering fabulous prizes for the best military vehicle models. A variety of categories are available, so there’s no excuse for not entering. Simply grab an idea and start modeling! Once you’re done, all you have to do is upload your model to Blendswap under one of the special contest categories. At the end of the judging period, we’ll judge the best model in each category.

Models may be submitted to the following categories. Each model may belong to only one category.

  • Land Machines: tanks, APCs, and the like.
  • Walkers: Power suits, mechs, etc. Remember realism.
  • Air Power: Planes, jets, helicopters and similar vehicles. Space vehicles are not a focus of this competition.

Entries are due by 12:00 AM (CST) on September 30

  1. Great idea. Hope there are loads of entries. I had to laugh at the "a variety of categories are available" when they're all within the pretty tight niche of military vehicles. Hopefully this is just because this is the first contest of many and the rest will cover the rest of the spectrum.

Anyway, always happy to see more free culture models available and more recognition for Blenders shining stars. Go Blendheads, go! :D

  2. Rest assure this is the first of many more contest coming to blendswap, we are already in talks for our next one. So if you guys don't like this one keep an eye on the site for more upcoming contest.

  3. This is not a good contest.
"""" As real vehicles have a form that cam reasonably be said to be functional, their design is generally not that protected. However, fictional vehicles are solely the product of an artist's imagination. For this reason, a model based on a fictional vehicle will be excluded from judgement. """""
A vehicle contest worth entering would allow for artist's imagination and would not shew-horn a modeler with lame contest rules.
"" this clown just wants your models ""
move on people nothing to see here move on people move on

  4. I'm going to have to highly disagree with Jim's comment. First, this is the first contest from BlenderSwap Maybe later they will have a contest for more fictional items. For now, this is "BlenderSwap" a community for openly sharing models with other artists. Either as a collaborated project an artist may be working on, or just for others to study from. (This tends to be my main use of BlenderSwap; a study ground for me to learn from other artists.) Second, we are talking about Blender here. What about all the coders and testers that freely contribute their time to build Blender. Blender is a community, and BlenderSwap is part of that community. It's offering free Blender Ebooks to help motivate people. Me, as a modeler, I'm always looking for something to model. I already had plans of modeling a plane and giving it away to BlenderSwap,. . .now, I have just a bit more motivation to do so. I could really use some more Blender books. . . .And I'm sure the community good use some more free models :D

  5. so is this a full on setup a shot and everything? or is basic clay render okay? 'cause while i love to sit and fiddle with mats and nodes, it can suck up a whole chunk of time especially when combined with lighting + post effects. genuine question.

  6. @HumanBlade, a basic clay render is fine, but it won't do as well as say a textured render, unless the model itself is amazing.

@phatcatoon, thanks for your kind words, it's nice to see people get it.

@jim, I would do a little more research before you post so in hindsight you don't look like the "clown". Blendswap is a free blender model repository that uses only CC licensing. It was started for the community. According to our research, comments, and request. Military vehicles are something that people in the community are looking for. Sorry, we're not fulfilling your creative itch, but I more concerned with what the community wants and what I see as a niche not being filled and filling it, which is one of the reasons I started Blendswap.

Being an artist myself, I understand wanting to through out some crazy 35 winged bomber. But that's not what this contest is for and the rules have been refined some since the contest has started.

@everyone, basically your vehicle needs to seem functional and practical. If you send in something from Gundam Wing we don't see that as functional but if you imagine the first or second generation walker/mech to come out of the military and it looks like it could actually happen these are acceptable. If you check this post in the comments HJMStudios links to some good examples of acceptable models. http://www.blendswap.com/3D-models/news/contest-announcement/comment-page-1/#comment-12621

  7. Military vehicles are something that people in the community are looking for.

    -- ""people"" or you.
How can I get the models I'm looking for-- I know I'll start a contest. HOW CAN YOU wave the flag of the CC licensing while demanding these requirements

IF you where an artist you would know creativity takes work it is not something thrown together with 35 wings. I am looking for a real artist contest and not someones attempt to use a community of artist for his or hers own means.
We both know you would never admit to doing so and WE both know you are trying and BADLY.
you would be ashamed of yourself but I don't think you understand shame....

    "" clown """

  8. Jim, you do not understand that stipulation. The meaning is that you shouldn't base your entry off *someone else's* fictional military vehicle. You could make your own fictional model, you just shouldn't make a Madcat mkII (Mech Warrior series), or Seige tank (Blizzard). Reasons being, said companies wouldn't be thrilled at your actions, and could hold blendswap liable.

There's a real nice python script for tank tracks, if anyone neeeds them, they were mentioned here on blednernation once. Should still work, it was around 2.52 or so.

Hey, Jim; quit hating on Blendswap! I'm the one who proposed the contest and set the rules. The goal is to create a pool of CC military models, because that's what non-Blendswap users seem to want. My aim is to draw attention to Blendswap, as it's a great resource and more people would use it if it had good models that fit their desired niche. You can, of course, submit a 35-wing bomber to Blendswap, it just wouldn't be eligible for the contest. (I, personally, would love to see a 35-wing bomber on Blendswap...)

  10. Jim,. . . If you don't do it bro, I'm going to do it. I'm going to make the most dankest, and most dopest 35-wing bomber out there. It's going to be all "blow", "pow", "bam"! It's going to be off the chain! ! !

You might not be interested in the contest above, or the prizes, or blenderswap in general, but many of us are. But, I'm going to call you out. I don't think you even have the artistic talent to create a 35-winged bomber. Yo' reputation is on the line now, bro. . .

In all serious. . . I really like the idea of BlenderSwap. Keep it up guys. I enjoy Downloading other artist models and looking at how they created their topology. How they control their edge loops, and mark their UV seams. I like that BlenderSwap is adding contest to their website. For future contest, though, me personally I would prefer a physical copy of a book than a e-book copy. Maybe I'm just old fashion, but I already stare at a computer screen enough as is. :P

Can't wait to see the models that get submitted.
I will be enter, too, Oh, and I'm completely serious about this whole 35-winged bomber.
    It will be submitted.

    Thanks, Blenderswap.
