This is story about an ordinary designer that meets an extra ordinary friend. Together they step outside and discover the star filled sky above their heads. What happens next? ..why not watch and find out :)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. The depth-of-field mismatch at 0:46 broke the illusion for me, but other than that I loved it.

Nice concept, good execution. The music fits perfectly too.

  2. Excellent compositing! I wonder if the same quality can be achieved using only Blender (ie. for compositing)... Hmmm....

  3. Hello, James!
Very cool idea and the very good implementation! Just want to advice you to make some "fake shadows" from real objects onto 3d objects for several frames.

P.S. Take in mind about relative depths of brightness for different planes (the example is the night sky and the main hero).

  4. Admittedly, some things could have been executed more professionally, but for me it wasn't an issue. The originality and obvious joy behind creating this short was truly uplifting. In all, way better than more professionally material I´ve seen. Thumbs up for originality. You made me smile! :)

  5. Hey all just wanted to say thanks for the love and constructive crit!!

This was my first ever attempt at creating a short animation. It took me about 1 weeks planning and 2 weeks creation time. Admittedly I had trouble with the fake shading, I'm a novice in blender and all my skills are self-taught. If anyone knows of any documentation on "fake shading" please shout out I'd love to get this looking perfect :) Needless to say it achieved good grades for a unit on my graphics course, woop!

    Thanks again! :D

  6. The good grades are well deserved IMO.
Impressive work especially given the time you spent on it.
    3 weeks isn't a lot of time...

salut James,j ai adoré ton court metrage,le cosmonaute qui se dépli,la musique est top et c est la bonne humeur et j aime ca!bonne continuation!merci

  8. nice work and animation.

the color grading and theme made me think about the DDR time and how much children
    were looking forward being astronauts.

I feel the blurred edges are not needed - they are so overused and don't really follow a design purpose.

  9. Nice!

I especially like the time spent looking at the stars. Excellent conceptual transitions!

You really show the role that emotion and story play in animation.

Technology (a new camera) should be a cost-benefit question. Your story comes across well, and the visual mistakes are unnoticeable for the most part . . . pretend that you don't care about 3D or animation, and just look at this as a visual story, for example.

Don't be afraid to use actors. This is not to imply that I did not like your acting; rather, a good actor brings things to the film that you never think of. Find one (or more) you trust, and see how things work out.

I think it would be worth your time to create more animations, now that you got your feet wet. I am looking forward to what comes next!

  10. ¡Excelente!
Well done James. You brought many smiles with this one. This is incredibly awesome because you got the main ingredient right, the story. The giants in animation keep reminding us that it's all about the story.
Press on, and the other things (DOF, shading, etc...) will improve too.

    Congrats!

  11. James, I think it's a really great result for the first time!!! I was amazed by the first scene where the character is transforming from paper. It's very creative, indeed!

http://vimeo.com/14368200 - it's first about your "shadows theme" (actually not about shadows but about the whole complex compositing theme)
http://www.blendernation.com/2011/07/12/demo-of-tracking-workflow-in-blender/ - and this too of course. There are some important tips from Compositor's part. Not a tutorial but you'll find it, I'm sure.

  12. Very impressive video. I like the story idea and believe it was presented in a fun and creative way. I think the comment that was made about a sequel is a great idea... if you do one, or something new, you know already that there will be a lot of us looking forward to it. No pressure... :)

  13. Congratulations my friend! I liked it very much. Specially the part when the little guy hugs the big guy. Outstanding!
