I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Voting should be based on individual personal preference, not on being blender-fanboy, remember that open productions of Blender Foundations are not officially associated with Blender itself!

  2. What do you mean? A far as I know the projects are designed to test Blender in a production environment, and to set new development targets. So it is absolutely associated with Blender itself. It's the heart of the whole adventure.

  3. JeroenM is right about the obious relationship between Blender Foundation and Open Movies; but I agree with Mixpixie about the voting issue.
    Regards,
    Raimon

  4. Associated would be if movie script is written by BF Chairman himself.

In this case the artworks was done by external group, Script was written by hired person...
So the artistic content and message is external product, and it would not reflect artistic preferences of all users.
(Testing in production environment can be done on everything for example "red riding hood").

And i understand that we are going to vote on "CG animation of the year", not technical award like "software update of the year"

  5. The BF Chairman and Sintel's producer were in cahoots to the level of being the same person, but whatever. Vote how you want to vote, or don't vote. All good. :)

  6. @Mixipixi: Dude, I hate to be the one that has to tell you this ... but The Blender Foundation is the one that cut the checks for that whole project (it is true that many people and organizations donated money, but the BF had total discretion over how those funds were allocated and dispensed). That being the case it can in no way be honestly believed that the BF was not in complete administrative control of the project. To insist that Sintel is not officially associated with blender is wrong to the point of idiocy. If this was a commercial venture, Sintel would be copyrighted property of The Blender Foundation and we would all be handing over some amount of money to see it. As it is, a good many amazing people worked very hard to give us something amazing. Please don't cheapen that by making absurd and overtly incorrect remarks. At the very least go read the project page from Blender's website, it clearly states that the project's goal is to improve blender. ***walks away, shaking head***

  7. Please read my comment carefully: i referred precisely to "artistic content" of the movie, not technical site, like improvements of software
made by open movies production. Also i did not critic the artistic qualities of animation, textures, rendering, art direction.
I fully support and appreciate BF activity of bringing the open source 3d application, To the point that i could call myself a "blender-fanboy". By "artistic content" i meant the more subtle things.

There is another side of Blender open movies - they are not innocent like rubber duck, but they bring specific artistic and psychological message and influence. In blender distribution copyright.txt file is written:

    "5. User warning and indemnification

WARNING: use of the Software and use of any works that are (partially)
created with the Software (the "Works") may cause physical or
psychological reactions from You or from third parties, which may result
in damages, injuries, losses and/or other negative consequences. You
acknowledge that BF can not be held liable for any such damages,
injuries, losses and/or other negative consequences. You acknowledge
that it is your obligation to investigate, prevent and/or minimize such
reactions prior to having third parties use the Works.

You shall indemnify and hold harmless BF from and against all actions,
claims, demands, proceedings, losses, damages, costs, charges and
expenses, including but not limited to legal fees and expenses, arising
out of or in connection with (i) the use of the Software by You and (ii)
the use of any Works created with the Software by You or any third
    parties."

I assume that official movie cannot use that disclaimer...

Also take into account that every user have his/her own view on interpretation on official-blender-movie content
and in this specific case the first part title of "Sintel" invariably brings associations with philosphy-realted terms of
"cause of all evil" , (When i first heard how the title was and that the BF "turned dark" I ***walked away, shaking head***)
Thats why users that come from specific background may find the title provocative, even
if in Dutch it means something like "burning coal". Add to this rather sad and unhappy story and you will get
the cause of unhappiness of some users.

Taking into account that BF is non-profit, public benefit foundation that draws on good emotions and
good will of its users, and that type of activity is always connected with emotions like gratefullness
for freely recieved software, Bringing dark themes in open movies creates contradiction.
Of course if BF would be a full fledged commercial company i would have no complains at all as company takes all risk
failure on itself. In commercial world that kind of production meet always the
response of free market, and i am asking myself how such production would work in a purely commercial environment.

Of course I will remain in sympathy for the software and for the Chairman
even if they decisions are as they are... After all i have no influence on them. Peace!

  8. Mixiepixie

I think your argument fails when you say "Bringing dark themes in open movies creates contradiction." Sounded like you see contradiction as a bad thing. And Blender Open Projects are facing a "purely commercial environment" even it's "non-profit, public benefit foundation".

Artists need freedom to create. The community contributes. Does artists really have freedom inside Blenderfoundation?

"they are not innocent like rubber duck" < That's the right track in my opinion ;)

    Yours,

    Ortiz

  9. If we see Freedom as a good thing, this leads to recognition that there exists
    a "good" ...and "bad".

Freedom is connected with possibility of choosing evil.
Or: existence of evil is allowed by existence of freedom.
Free choice is connected the responsibility.

Artist is in the fortunate situation that he/she can decide on what side
    will stand.

Freedom comes also with a disclalimer: "use at your own risk". And face the consequences...

    Regards

  10. Is a bit UNFAIR that Blender is the only one Software in its category that doesn't had a demostrative video with its amazing features and possibilities :/

    Greetings

  11. @Mixiepixie: rest assured that Ton had a LOT of creative input into Sintel. Apart from the fact that it was funded through the BF and all the hiring of talent was done by Ton himself (in consultation with Colin and crew), Ton was in amongst the creatives from start to finish, with many comments and overall veto power on creative decisions.

Good to be nominated. Vote as you see fit.

  12. @Mixiepixie: From the Sintel homepage -> about -> project targets:
As usual – like previously for Orange, Peach, Apricot – the Blender Foundation’s interest is to organize projects that will help Blender further:

    -Stimulate development of advanced features.
-Validation of Blender by great artists
-Use and improve an open source creation pipeline
-Deliver good publicity and PR for Blender
-Create useful presentation and educational material in Open Content
-Last but not least, provide a fun and inspiring experience for the entire Blender community!

We do this by inviting the best of the talents from the Blender community to work in Amsterdam for half a year or more, in the studio of the Blender Institute. They get excellent working conditions, and full coverage for travel and housing, including a reasonable fee. All of tools we use here for the film are open source, and everything we create, including the final result, is being delivered as free and open content under Creative Commons Attribution.

    Technical targets:
-High detail multi-res modeling (sculpting) and render (micropolygons?)
    -Fire/smoke/volumetrics & explosions
-Compositing using tiles/regions, so it becomes resolution independent
-Crowd/massive simulation (fix animation system to allow duplicates)
-Improve library system for managing complex projects
-Deliver in 4k digital cinema (depending agreement with sponsor)
-Make the Blender 2.5x series fully production ready.
(Note: the compositing and crowd sim targets have been postponed for another project)

  13. Let me cite a following quotes:

"Here we find in this world a great deal of injustice..." - Bertrand Russell
(assumption that there is higher frequency of occurence of "evil conversions"

    and

"“If everyone does it, it must be stupid.” Ton Roosendaal, 2009

Well, i hope that famous quotation of the Chairman will not begin to work against Himself...

Peace again! I really am blender-fanboy:)

  14. What is all the bs talk of light and dark and good and evil. Grow up, this sounds like some wierd conspiracy theorist rhetoric by someone who reads too much into the fine print. Just because a story is "so sad" that you might cry or so frightening that you might get a little bit scared. They are basically protecting themselves from idiots who like to sue artists for releasing material that is "too intense." Ozzy Osbourne and Judas Priest had to put up with that crap from some idiot parents who blamed the lyrics for death of their kids.

The Blender Foundation is one of the most altruistic organizations period. Those guys work hard on an amazing software and they do not have to do it. They provide a world class software to the masses and people who want to do stuff like animate and create characters. They are promoting the use of imagination and artistic and technical skill period. I can think of alot worse goals for a company. The software is amazing. The team is amazing. The community is amazing. And the works produced, whether fully or partially with blender, are amazing. End of story.

  15. Don't know about Sintel but Blender should win. actually Blender must Win. I voted for Blender and Sintel but there are only two categories where they nominated.. Blender should be in more.
