The Alcoholic Frog

13

Need something to laugh about - do you like 3D bar jokes? This might be worth watching then. David Ward a Blender certified trainer is the creator of those animations which. While hanging out with his friends at the bar or wherever, sometimes he likes to slip into a rough British accent (namely taken from Ralph Brown's character "Del Preston" on Wayne's World 2), always starting the conversation out with "So there I was at the pub, right..." and going on into some ridiculous nonsense story. He liked this "character" so he figured he'd put him into the CG world as an Alcoholic Frog. He is not sure why he has choosen a frog, but it works great.

David was so nice to also talk a little about the project and show different versions of it generated over the years.

He wrote:

I originally created the "Alcoholic Frog" way back in late 2006 and uploaded to Youtube as a test animation. For some reason, it became pretty popular (amongst High Schoolers, I've gathered), so I've been inclined to create further "episodes" as the years have gone by. The first two "episodes" (and the "Taking a Breather") were created in 3D Studio Max; but I learned Blender later on in 2007, and it became my only 3D tool thereafter.

Part 3 was my attempt at a photo-realistic frog, but my "audience" liked the cartoonish feel better, so in Part 4, imported the original frog model into Blender, and gave it a basic rig.
I never was quite satisfied with how the re-imported frog looked, so with Part 5, I finally decided to redo the whole shebang, and came up with a new (and better, IMHO) design and rig to better display my better techniques I've learned over the past 4 years.

  1. It's so cool this was made in Blender! I keep debating about getting Maya, but then I see stuff like this and it revitalizes my hope. Great stuff, I hope he keeps doing more.

  3. Alexis, I feel your pain.
Just remember, the main reason things in Maya look so good is because professionals use it. You are seeing work done for profit by professionals. There is no reason Blender can't currently match most of what you see in Maya. I've used both Maya and Max, and while I'll admit they are more feature complete, it's the talent of the people using them that makes the material produced by them look so good. Concentrate on your skills first. Spending thousands of dollars on those programs won't improve your work unless you have truly maxed out all of the tools Blender has to offer. I doubt that very many people are at that point with Blender. Blender does offer a lot!

Blender offre beaucoup!

  5. @cekuhnen:

"David Ward a Blender certified trainer is the creator of those animations which." - is that a correct English sentence, or one that makes sense?

'chosen' not 'choosen' (actually this last word is being underlined as I type, so I guess you don't use a spell-checker, or else you would have noticed)

  7. Magiciandude on

Great job, si!

  8. I dont like it at all... only the first video has a nice render.. that's it... Animation is very amateur...I see everybody amazed with this.. :S
