binarycortex writes:

With the continuing success of the LuxRender competitions, we are proud to present the latest competition "Simple is Beautiful". The competition will run until July 1st 2011 23:59:59 UTC, all entries must be new original works. So come on by and join the fun. Show off your skills, who knows you may just win a prize.

The winner of the competition will receive a $20 credit from BlenderRenders.com. Runners up will win a FREE copy of Blender and LuxRender. ;-)

The goal of these competitions is to promote LuxRender, demonstrate its abilities, and elicit new works of art rendered with the LuxRender rendering engine.

  1. I don't get it, if the competitors were using Luxrender (and maybe Blender) in the first place, they wouldn't really need an additional copy of Luxrender (or Blender)? Why not offer a free license of The Gimp® or maybe MyPaint® instead? ;)

  2. There really isn't much to go on is there? We've got the title, and we know were using Blender and LuxRender, but we don't know much else about the actual works...

  3. Ah, yet another LuxRender contest that I'll want to enter, but be too lazy or occupied to enter.

    @ Simon:

I think Artorp knew it was a joke, thus why they ended their comment with a joke. ;)

  4. @jack It's just a matter of "reading the forum post for further details".

    Rules:
    1. You must use LuxRender only, no SLG submissions. Use either the latest stable release, a weekly, or compile your own the day you start your render.
    2. You must create a new original work, you cannot re-render something you have already done. Reusing old models, however, is acceptable.
    3. You can use any modeling program/exporter you wish. (Yaay!) Just render in LuxRender (see rule #1).
    4. Submissions should be rendered to at least 1000 S/px if possible. Carbonfluxing* a render is not necessary, but it makes them look very nice.
    5. The only post production allowed is what is built in to LuxRender. (We are trying to showcase LuxRender, not Gimp or Photoshop.)
    6. The time frame for this competition is 1 month. Submissions after July 1st 2011 23:59:59 UTC will not be considered.
    7. The winner will be chosen by you via a forum poll.
    8. Final submissions must be posted to the corresponding competition gallery.

*The term carbonfluxing refers to the fact that Carbonflux typically uses 10000 S/px as a minimum for a render.

  5. Mac PPC-User on

My application would be a black screen, as Blender is supporting PPC-machines, LuxRender is not.
Therefore I would not have any chance to win a free copy of LuxRender for my kind of computer-system. It's that simple.

So no recommendation for LuxRender from my side - as I will not sell my 4*PPC Mac just to enter any submission.

But on the other hand the internal Blender renderer is definitively underestimated. If you squeeze the right triggers you will get amazing interior scenes with the internal render engine as well.

  6. @Mac PPC-User: dude, if you want to limit yourself to old and outdated technology, fine, but there's no reason to bash Luxrender. It's not like you'd get much performance from it anyway on that old thing.

    @roofoo: dude,
What's wrong with 64 bit-PPC-processors? I guess you should make some performance tests on an "old" 4-Processor G5-computer before claiming about outdated technology.

There is definitively no performance gap. The information gap on the other hand seems to be limitless.
