Renderfarm.fi wins at the World Summit Award

Julius Tuomisto writes:

We at Renderfarm.fi received some fantastic news this weekend. The service has been chosen as one of the global World Summit Award 2011! In a process that took nearly a year (we made the initial application June 2010 and got the Finnish representation last October), Renderfarm.fi was finally picked as one of the five winners in the category of "E-Science and Technology".

The World Summit Award Grand Jury met in Hong Kong, SAR China, from April 8-14 bringing together eminent multimedia and e-Content experts from 32 countries. The jury evaluated over 460 entries, which were nominated from 105 UN member states to the global WSA. The jury selected the five most outstanding products in each of the eight WSA categories as winners. We we're one of the winning 40. The prize ceremony is to be held in Cairo, Egypt later this year.

We based our application on the fact that combining free and open rendering power available to everybody from almost anywhere on the planet with a free and open source 3D suite (Blender) is a combination that simply cannot be dismissed on a whim. This is as much a win for us developers as it is for our community of over 4000 registered users.

Congratulations, guys!!

  1. I'd like to post this here too, an edit I made to my blog on the site:

"Edit 31.5.2011: I should have said all this for starters. The production environment that has offered (and continues to offer) us the possibility to do this is Laurea University of Applied Sciences (needless to say a great place to do your studies at:). The team that goes to the "history books" for having worked on the World Summit Award win are: Julius Tuomisto (producer), Janus Bager Kristensen (producer), Olivier Romand (co-producer), Jesse Kaukonen (co-producer) and Nathan Letwory (co-producer). The others that I'd like to credit here for their efforts on creating theses's related to the service include (in no particular order): Jani Lintunen (mr. Graphics himself), Lauri Viitanen, Lassi Haaranen, Heikki Seppälä, Niko Suomalainen, Juha Laakso and Laura Aspholm. Finally although there's huge list of users who I felt obliged to mention for their efforts (Kudos to all BOINCers - you guys rock!), I'd like to extend special thanks to Manuel Geissinger of Geissinger Design (alias manu) and the Icelandic design talent of Kosmos & Kaos who together created the new theme that probably was a vital part of our draw. Finally I'd extend my greets to my whole beloved Studio Lumikuu team, with whom we created the totally awesome "What is Renderfarm.fi? feat. Big Buck Bunny" video that ultimately probably tipped the balance to us in this competition..

As always, thank you for your continued support - we couldn't achieve any of this without all of you volunteers! Champagne time! :)"

Wander if your gonna add a private option in the future?

It would be good to help the Blender Institute with their rendering needs during the next project, without the output being open to everyone to see?

    regards

  3. @TFSnacker: We could limit what you see on the website, but currently there's really no way to obstruct people from peeking into the .blend files anyway. Let's see what the future holds on that front - maybe some new encryption technologies might offer some protection in the future. Still, even then I'd rather make it optional for people to participate in encrypted or obstructed renders than to try to impose such a thing on everybody. Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the congrats guys. Appreciate it. :)

  4. Congrats, congrats, congrats! Another point on the board for FOSS, and another decoration to put on the wall of the Blender community! I love Renderfarm.fi and I started contributing "spare processing power" a few months ago. It feels as good as helping my neighbor out, because basically, we're doing just that. I appreciate the work of the people who helped develop both Renderfarm.fi and Blender, and I thank the many people in the Blender community who contribute to making Renderfarm.fi a success!

  5. Congratulations Renderfarm.fi!
Anyone know how one can inspect what's being currently rendered in boinc on my computer?

I love to contribute my GPU power to others but I'd also love to see (even just a thumbnail) of what I'm currently helping to render.

I'm just thinking that sharing should work both ways when I'm actually making the effort to help running the renderfarm. :)

Any hints will be greatly appreciated.
