Trimensional: Cheap 3D Scanning on iPhone

20

Looking to do some 3D scanning on the cheap? Well okay, you will need to have an iPhone for this one, but if you do then $6 will allow you to do 3D scanning with the iPhones facetime camera. $0.99 will buy the Trimensional app, and export to other formats including .stl (which can be imported to Blender) is unlocked with a $4.99 in-app purchase.

More information on the app, plus links to the iTunes app store can be found at the Trimensional website.

  1. Cool, though it looks like it might be fairly easy to program, If you have a camera that you could control completely from the computer, apeture, shutter speed and flash brightness, you could have it take multiple pictures in succession and then create a program to calculate the depth map

  2. Actually I revise that based on watching other videos you'd have to program your computer as a light, and sync your camera to take pictures

  3. In most cases this scanning is just useless, flashy thing. It is just as useful as drawing on iphone with your finger. Good luck with getting anything decent with it.

or you can try David LaserScanner (free) it requires a webcam or camera

    and a line laser.

  5. This is solid technology, don't get me wrong; yet there's an odd feeling of obsolete...when a telephone attempts to do your job.

    time to stay creative.

  6. I purchased the app for .99 and used it. Its fun seeing the outcomes of the play.

Because it is play, as it doesn't capture the geography of your face very accurately.

Moreover, the export out of the OBJ file costs extra, $4.99 per export. Also the mesh is very dense at 3.5 Megs. That's a lot of triangles.

I tried reworking it in Blender/Silo, but it was a hog to move around.

However, I close with, it's a fun little app to try. Just don't expect a mature output.

    *cough* _per_export_ ?
Doesn't sound so cheap anymore (cost-wise).
