The site seems to link up with see.me, which is a pay for online portfolio site. The whole thing seems pretty subversive to me.

Indeed, In the official contest rules it’s stated you can only submit when you pay them 10 dollars. Not a scam, but definitely not the best opportunity to seek “free” exposure!

for every competition I apply at I often pay up to 50$ just for submitting the work.
Guys für jeden Wettbewerb bewerbe ich mich bei mir oft zahlt bis zu 50 $ nur für die Einreichung der Arbeiten.
So how exactly is this a “collaborative project” ?
If you have to pay to enter a competition then consider the organisers motives. It’s purely for profit, which they usually try to conceal by claiming that the entry fees are only to cover administration costs. Bulls#!t. It’s not a genuine competition, it’s actually just a lottery/raffle.
There are plenty of legitimate competitions out there. Take a look at the reputable ones at designboom for example…

Looking up the Whois, looks like whoever registered the domain used a home address rather than the organization’s address. I’m not sure how to interpret this, does that make it sound a bit odd? This appearing like such an ambitious competition or organization, I would assume that they at least have a legitimate office under their Whois, not their home’s, but who knows, maybe I’m looking into it too much.
Pass. At best it’s a Vanity gallery. You would get better exposure on deviantart.

Please consider the negative effect on prospect job and opportunity posters

I read the words “power of self” and go back to what I’ll be working on for the next few years.
If I had a year paid for, my overhead would still have me sitting down with blender daily.

What shocks me is the attitude of posters because this really discredits us as a community.
I can only explain it by the lack of understanding and never having participated in those venues
and not really being an active member inside the field of commercial fine arts.
Every competition is a call for artists to submit work for an exhibition or book publication and a jury will decide who gets in and who not. There is never a guaranty to get in. And I know few books from Larks publishing where afterwards the jury was criticized for being highly biased.
That this is very subjective by nature is more then common sense – and irritating at times.
But that is just part of the game – art is subjective – it is not math – take it or leave it.
The year pay their offer is based on the National Endowment for the Arts which is roughly 2.200 $ per month.
For a banker not much for a starving artists quite a lot – this is comparable to those artist in residencies.
Reporting scam is a good thing – claiming it is scam without proof is wrong.

Jeder Wettbewerb ist ein Aufruf für Künstler die Arbeit für eine Ausstellung oder ein Buch Veröffentlichung einreichen und eine Jury entscheidet, wer eingelassen wird und wer nicht. Es gibt nie eine Garantie, um reinzukommen Und ich weiß, einige Bücher aus der Lerchen Publishing, wo später der Jury für sein sehr voreingenommen kritisiert wurde. Dass dies sehr subjektiv von der Natur ist mehr als der gesunde Menschenverstand – und irritierend Zeiten. Aber das ist nur ein Teil des Spiels – Kunst ist subjektiv – es ist nicht Mathematik – nimm es oder lass es. sorry cekuhnen, calling people “immature and fool” is not the best way to promote this kind of contests. Maybe it’s a good opportunity for professional artists, I’m almost convinced, and maybe for “professional artists” this kind of advertisement
is normal, but you cannot deny that people react in a negative way because the whole process looks a little “scamish”.

Nobody who claims that this is a scam actually delivers any proof of it.
On the contrary the way how they do business is a very common model in this field.
An organisation collects a fee for entry, with the chance to win, which everybody
who is a professional artists and earns a living with it, knows is a matter of
taste and luck.
Everybody knows and accepts it. This is professional fine arts and not the math.
You either hit the taste of the jury and get in or not and don’t get it.
The collected money will be used to fund the costs for the event and other elements
such as revenue and prices.
Based on your own response I assume that you never participated in a competitive
event like this one. It is common practice to charge on a per work, or slide basis.
I had my work shown in smaller shows as well as bigger shows such as SNAG, SOFA
and also SIGGRAPH and I can assure you I also paid 30 US$ just for submitting one piece of work.
If somebody feels this is wrong – hey basically all artists would agree.
I hardly know anybody who did not have bad experience with some galleries.
But sadly that is not the way how the world runs.
But opinion and a lack of experience with this type of fine arts competition
is not a valid reason to simply claim not justified scam accusations and also
put up a rather very harsh and rude tone.

Eine Organisation erhebt eine Gebühr für die Einreise, mit der Chance zu gewinnen, die jeder, der ist ein professioneller Künstler und verdient sein Geld damit, kennt, ist eine Frage des Geschmacks und des Glücks. Jeder kennt und akzeptiert. Dies ist die professionelle bildende Kunst und nicht die Mathematik. Entweder Sie treffen den Geschmack der Jury und nehmen oder nicht und verstehe es nicht. Das gesammelte Geld wird verwendet, um die Kosten für die Veranstaltung und andere Elemente, wie Einnahmen und Preise zu finanzieren. Basierend auf Ihrer eigenen Antwort, die ich annehmen, dass Sie nie an einem Wettkampf wie diesem. Es ist üblich, auf einer Pro arbeiten oder Dia Grundlage gestellt. Ich hatte meine Arbeit in kleineren Shows sowie größere Shows wie SNAG, SOFA und auch SIGGRAPH gezeigt und ich kann Ihnen auch ich bezahlt 30 US $ nur für die Einreichung einer Arbeit zu gewährleisten. Seems to me there is an immediate conflict between “The Power of Self” and “Commercial Fine Arts”.
Of course I appreciate that artists must satisfy economic demands, but your extreme defensiveness and accusation that artists that are unwilling to pay out of pocket to have their art judged are somehow ignorant seems just plain arrogant.
Seems to me this whole thing is an exercise in vanity. I am a little disappointed that BlenderNation would post and thereby seemingly endorse such a thing.

Natürlich schätze ich, daß Künstler muss ökonomischen Anforderungen gerecht zu werden, aber Ihre extreme Abwehr und Anklage, dass Künstler, die sich weder aus eigener Tasche zahlen sind, ihre Kunst zu beurteilen sind, irgendwie scheint einfach nur ignorant arrogant. Mir scheint, diese ganze Sache ist eine Übung in Eitelkeit. Ich bin ein wenig enttäuscht, dass BlenderNation würde Post und damit scheinbar billigen so eine Sache.

Professional fine artists want to get into galleries and museums and sell their work. Galleries and exhibitions provide the platform and charge for this service.
I am not defensive, I am plainly explaining how those competitions work.
There is no professional competition, which is sales and exhibition orientated which does not charge for the submission.
You cannot pay for the costs of the exhibition, prices, and time to organize such an event with only the money collected from the few artists which were accepted.
On the contrary why don’t you post links to a professional and respectable competition which does not charge and lets in everybody?
Please consider this before calling me arrogant and being disappointed at
Blendernation posting a competition which just follows common business models.

‘Professional and respectable’ is highly subjective and sounds a little elitist.
Why should one such ‘competition’ enjoy the endorsement of BlenderNation above others?
Furthermore, Blender is cross-platform, free and open-source. In my (possibly deluded) mind Blender is about ‘access’. Access for those who would like to examine and change the code, and more importantly, access for people who cannot afford to drop a grand on 3d software.
This is my opinion, but I believe this ethic should extend to BlenderNation and thus the site should only post and endorse contests that are ‘accessible’ to all artists, not just those with significant amounts of disposable income.

The inherent conflict (and symbiosis) between art and commerce is as old as art and commerce. I would think a ‘fine artist’ would be intimately familiar with the paradox.

nope. I work as a professional 3D artist, which in this case means people (architecture or engineering firms mostly) pay for my work, not as much as I want (:P) but they pay for my time anyway. I’m not familiar with the kind of competition proposed in the article.

it seems you have the romantic idea of fine art should be free and for everybody.
But you need to realize that this is not how fine artists can earn a living.
Then you would also understand that this is not elitist but simply reality.
No gallery or university would value a resume filled with local free
art venues compared to somebody who got selected in competitive exhibitions.
Credibility has to be established somehow – this is just the way it is.
I hope you realize on your own, how radical and discriminating your opinion is
that Blendernation should not post any sort for opportunity for serious emerging
artists to get connected to the professional art field based on the fact that Blender
is open-source and some users here use it rather as a hobby and not as a serious
tool for their professional work and don’t earn any money with it?
When you talk about significant income reality is that we talk about maybe 10 to 50 $.

This call for submission is as common practice as any other opportunity.
If one does not agree with it thats fine – but just accusing it for

Keine Galerie oder Universität würde Wert auf eine freie Kunst mit lokalen Veranstaltungsorten im Vergleich zu jemandem, der im Wettbewerb Ausstellungen ausgewählt wurde gefüllt wieder aufzunehmen. Glaubwürdigkeit muss irgendwie hergestellt werden – das ist so wie es ist. Ich hoffe, Sie auf eigene Faust, wie radikal und besonnener Ihre Meinung, dass Blendernation sollte nicht nach irgendeiner Art für ernsthafte Chance für junge Künstler auf der professionellen künstlerischen Feld auf die Tatsache, dass Open-Source Blender und einige Benutzer hier zugrunde zu lassen ist zu realisieren verwenden Sie es eher als Hobby und nicht als ein sehr nützliches Instrument für ihre professionelle Arbeit und verdienen kein Geld damit? Wann sprechen Sie von nennenswerten Einkünfte Realität ist, dass wir über vielleicht 10 bis 50 $ sprechen. Dies ist nicht eine erhebliche Menge an Geld den Menschen. Condar, könnte man dann erklären, warum Sie verstehen, dass sie etwas rufen einen Betrüger, die gängige Praxis ist? Diese Aufforderung zur Einreichung ist als üblich wie bei jeder anderen Gelegenheit. Wenn man nicht damit einverstanden thats fine – aber nur beschuldigte ihn für sein betrügerisches oder uns Entsendung Betrug ist einfach nicht ok. Was ist der Sinn darin?

I thought I did in a previous post … but if I had to explain a little more then, because regular people, not “Elite BS artists”, working as 3d artists, designers, illustrators, 3d painters, TV animators, professional photographers, etc, working in advertising, engineering firms, arch viz, TV commercials, etc, etc, etc, …….. that people do not pay with their own money to their bosses to get a job…. they work in an art project and get money for his time.
on the other hand, it’s perfectly normal that after reading in a website “pay for in to the contest, then we will use that money to pay a price, then someone win the price” people at least have doubts about it, specially if the main goal of the contest is to promote your own art work.

Wenn ich etwas schaffen versuche ich sehr hart, um meine Gefühle Selbstwertgefühl von den Reaktionen der anderen zu trennen. Ich liebe Sex – bin nicht bereit, dafür zu zahlen …. heißt das negieren meine Liebe für Sex – kein …. aber ich weiß nicht sehr oft gelegt bekommen. Kunst – Liebe – Sex – you name it. Sie müssen bei Entscheidungen umzugehen. Persönlich – Ich werde unter keinen Umständen Wahlen – möchten nicht auf allen beurteilt werden. Ich tue, was ich tue und meine Arbeit muss nur auf seinen eigenen Stand … so sei es.

I have participated to many exibitions in the past. They were not fine art exibitions, but scientific exibitions, but it is the same principle. Works shown were innovative technologies. I had to pay between 400 and 1000 Euros to show my works (prototypes)and participate to a competition.
And Awards were only cups and medals, and the slight hope of beeing seen by a potential client…
When you show real works, you have to pay for the organisation, and booth. When you show art works that can be displayed on screens and transmitted by Internet, costs are lower, but there is always a cost.
So, if this cost is as low as 10 USD per work and if there is a possibility for one artist to win one year paid for, I really don’t see any problem in such method !

Ich habe mit vielen Ausstellungen in der Vergangenheit teilgenommen haben. Sie waren nicht von Ausstellungen bildender Kunst, aber die wissenschaftliche Ausstellungen, aber es ist das gleiche Prinzip. Werke gezeigt wurden innovative Technologien. The entry fee serves several purposes. Obviously it covers the basic monetary needs of the organization. More importantly, it helps to keep the riffraff out- even a fee as low as $10. Imagine how many anime self portraits from high school kids would be bombing the server if it was free, it’d look like DA.
Many small gallery openings have the artist covering the cost of things like food, beverages, etc. Not to mention that some galleries have very specific presentation requirements that might cost the artist money to comply. Sites like Etsy charge money to post and when you sell, and galleries get at least a 30% cut when something sells. Being an artist isn’t exactly cheap, one has to spend money to make money. For any artist who has been around the block, $10 is chump change. To get exposure in NYC is huge for any serious artist, I for one am glad this was posted here. Don’t let idealism get in the way of a good opportunity.

I guess You’ll just have to forgive me for being pessimistic about prizes that sound kind of like something the ‘grand-nephew of the late Nigerian prime minister’ might offer in exchange for sending money to help escape from his ‘evil uncle’. :) (no, really, he was so desperate that he sent little ‘ol me an e-mail! Best $10,000 I ever spent…)

I’m sure everyone’s opinion is valid in context, but this seems to be a fairly divisive issue.
I suggest that in the future, if this kind of article is to be posted, at least post the admission fee prominently in the article. A mention would probably have avoided all of this. I think that’s fair and responsible.

A little research would have shown that this is just simply how the professional
world rolls and in case somebody is new – I would always make sure I am right
before I make claims and accusations. Or at least ask if it is a scam or a real
honest offer.
But as you can see instead of asking nearly 90% went right into the accusation.

Their website follow sadly some cheap template designs which can sometimes make
somebody remind about scam websites. But I know much more worse site designs

Ihre Website folgen leider einige billige Template-Designs, die manchmal kann jemand über Betrug Webseiten zu erinnern. Aber ich weiß viel schlimmer Website-Designs, während respektablen Organisationen hinter ihnen sind. The burden of research falls on the journalist not the readers. This is fundamental. Not all BlenderNation readers are ‘fine artists’ some of us are engineers, others are students, game designers, programmers, scientists, or architects. Blender is a tool for all of us. BlenderNation is read by Blender users of all stripes.

Please be sensitive to the fact that many Blender users are intensely passionate about Blender and are devoted to its ethic of openness and free access. This passion may border on zealotry at times, but without it Blender would not be what it is. It’s a force of nature, respect it, especially in your role as a reporter for BlenderNation.

I agree that $10 is not a huge entry fee. However, it would have been nice if it was at least stated in the article that a $10 entry fee was required.

You see that’s the beauty of a scam, you have to enter into it and pay the money ONLY then to realise it IS a scam.
My personal point of view is that ANYONE who requires money and is NOT upfront about it, should be well aware that people are either going to call them scam’ers, that they are doing this because they are scam’ers, or they are somewhat afraid that the money they can legitimately generate will be limited by being upfront.
Either way I think there are plenty of places on the web to get know and for people to see your work WITHOUT paying money.
I have NEVER seen any reason to EVER pay anyone to display my work, and I don’t recommend anyone else EVER does.
If everyone followed that line of reasoning, the days of the scammers would be over, quicker than you could say ‘fine art’

Even though this is a common practice it is far from how the “professional fine arts world” standard and has varying rates of success. Just because some galleries do it doesn’t make it a valid business practice. You shouldn’t insult people for having misgivings about paying for the dubious honor of posting their work in a online “vanity gallery” with a questionable and ill-defined reward. And after reading Ross Munros experience their submission process needs a lot of work. This article and the website for the “collaborative project”*what exactly are you working on together?* do a poor job of describing this competition. If anything would discredit the blender community and have it come off as abrasive it would be the vitriolic responses you’ve given towards your readers for posting their initial reactions towards this competition.
The winner being selected based on views of their gallery is lame and exploitable.

I hardly do not know any exhibition I participated in where the entrance fee was the first information
listed because everybody knows that there will be most commonly a fee.

Please be considered with accusations by comparing the amount of money vanity galleries normally
charge for only displaying your work compared to the services Artistwanted offers.
The difference here is quite obvious.
Only because something is new and tries to offer more modern exposure channels does not mean
it is a rip-off or unprofessional.
That there can be issues with the submission process or that the website and other aspects can be
improved is a different story. But those relate to the communication of what this is about and not
this is at its core.

I’m sorry that you have taken all of these comments so personally. Maybe in the future your should just not read the replies to your own posts, like how some actors don’t read reviews of their performances.
Let your work as a reporter stand for itself as you would a work of art. If you feel you have to keep defending/explaining it – maybe it wasn’t that great to begin with.
I know, I know – you didn’t take it personally, I just don’t understand how the ‘art world’ works…

I paid for the Artist’s wanted full website and it’s limited and quite buggy. For 90 bucks there is basically only Helvetica in whatever colour you desire and no design options.
But the titles under each image are hard to type in as the pointer shakes when you try to choose the pencil icon. Also the titles weren’t saved when I tried to view my site as someone else would see it. I must say I’m quite disappointed.

Here is a tip, call it a freebee, if you like: build your own FREE site on the best platform there is – Weebly – http://www.weebly.com/ . Want to sell your work and/or sell prints? Got to Fine Art America http://artistwebsites.com/?affiliateid=A7801 – (disclosure: the FAA link contains my affiliate ID – I do get a reward for the referral). But I wouldn’t recommend them if I wasn’t 100% satisfied myself.
A bit of a bait and switch not to mention the contest entry fees up front. Would not have bothered filling out the information, reformatting picture to their specs, etc… if I had known there was a fee.
