Blender Developers Meeting Notes April 3, 2011

20

Blender 2.57 is progressing nicely. Currently on the radar: changes to the default settings and their impact.

Ton Roosendaal writes:

Hi all,

2.57

  • Startup.blend changes: discussed were two defaults:
    • Continuous grab: disable as default factory setting. Reasoning: it's jerky on slow redraws, on fast mouse moves it's losing offset, on small areas annoying, on headers annoying too (move up or down). People who like it or already use if have in their startup anyway, but the regular bugreports about it show it's not a good default.
    • Open Image thumbnails for image browse: currently still disabled. It will crash Blender on any corrupt file in a directory, without feedback what's wrong. Andrea would like to see it default though, several bugs have been fixed here and it's more stable than in 2.56.
  • Startup issue: when we move to 2.57, the startup.blend, scripts and other config files are not read. Users have to manually copy it over... can we find a nice way to help migrating it? For example option in the splash to allow this...
  • Meeting agreed on doing another RC (2). We can do final release within a week then. Ton will send builders official request later today.
  • Jens Verwiebe is also available for OSX test builds, to assist Damien.

Other projects

  • The new buildbot progresses well, for Linux it now even builds binaries similar to releases. Brecht will help getting a system in Blender Institute to make builds.

GSoC

Students can still apply until friday April 8, 1900 UTC. Don't wait too long!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. In 2.56, the excellent Material Utils add-on doesn't work by default after startup (the Q key has no effect) even though it is selected and saved in my startup.blend. I have to open Preferences, deselect it, then reselect it, after which the Q key works. Is this a problem with the add-on or Blender?

  2. On the subject of the startup blend:

Why does the camera have a slight y rotation? It has ever since I started using blender and as far as I know serves no purpose.

  3. There still some feature that did not made it this 2.57 like key "C" in edit-mode which I use a lot in 2.49. hope they will bring it back or if there is a new key which I'm not aware
of it.any way It look good.

  4. I keep on asking about the state of the render branch (GI) and yet I get no answer, Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for Blender and admire the whole effort by the Blender team, but it's a bit frustrating having no news from the feature I need the most, Global illumination. A little light ;P on this issue would be great!

  5. I miss: the bevel tool and skin faces /edge loops!
Actualy, if we have to close many faces to make a bridge of polygons, in the new blender we have to make one by one. It's terrible!

Skin Faces and Bevel tool, please come back, i love you!

  6. great bugfix! thank you for getting fresh fluid sim back in blender ;) only issue is: scripting layout still has an unnecesary console, wich should be an info box...
for the new version i guess its best to quote sintel : "Yaaaaaay!, Jea!" (5:01)

  7. no one will gonaa look at grease pencil i think... there is a bug frm blender 2.5.0 and its still buggy.. i metion that in bug tracker many times but no one to look at it ... any one can help here??????? .... if grease pencil's keys problem will solved then it will b a big help

    thanks

  8. When you are already in a view, having that hotkey do nothing, is dumb. It's a waste of a key to have to have top&bottom, left&right, etc. It's really not very hard to hit something twice in quick succession.
