Blender FDS updated

There has been an update to BlenderFDS, a Blender plugin that serves as a front end for the NIST Fire Dynamics Simulator.

FDS is a computational fluid dynamics model of fire-driven fluid flow. The software solves numerically a form of the Navier-Stokes equations appropriate for low-speed, thermally-driven flow, with an emphasis on smoke and heat transport from fires.

BlenderFDS effort is completely unrelated and independent from FDS development performed at NIST and other organizations. None of these organizations finance, support, endorse, or otherwise recommend BlenderFDS.

  2. What sort of geometry is generated for the smoke and the fire? Is this something that could be textured and used in other simulations and animations?

    • Yes! It could be imported back from FDS to Blender. Do not forget that FDS smoke and fire would be "physically meaningful".

      FDS is open source, its data format is simple and fully documented.

      Once you have the geometry of the building, the fire and the smoke in Blender, you can render what occupants would encounter while escaping from a real fire in the building.

      Can you imagine the applications for fire safety and fire rescue training?

      Currently we postponed this part of the project because we did not find any developer that could help us out.

      This could be a paid work. The resulting code would be released with an open source license.

    Sounds VERY cool and (the concept) makes me, as a long time Blender lover and supporter, continue to love Blender even more. However, I don't know WTF this is!!?! Can we see any examples, videos, etc?

    OK fine, from that page I go to... http://fire.nist.gov/fds/.. hmmm, looks descriptive, but still (for someone coming in as a new user) no idea WTF they're talking about.

    This is exactly the type of thing that make ppl HATE Blender!! Lack of, or confusing, documentation.

  4. Smoke and fire are generated by FDS and currently not imported back into Blender.
    FDS smoke and fire are of very good quality, as they are "physically meaningful".

    FDS is open source, its data file format is simple and well documented.
    We could be interested in financing such development and releasing the result as an open source import filter.

    I disagree.
    It is not because because Autocad does exist, that everyone who can use it is an architect.
    The contrarie would be great. Imagine everyone being a biomolecular scientist because it is open source.
    Emanuele should not wait with the release until ? everyone can understand the documentation.

    @John: BlenderFDS export the geometry and the material thermo-physical properties to FDS. FDS calculates the heat and smoke generated by the fire in the building.
    Currently fire and smoke can't be exported back to Blender. But as this is a good idea, if someone is interested we can think to it. FDS is open source, its file format is fully documented. That could be an easy task. (developers wanted!)

    @Arn: you are right. But FDS and BlenderFDS are very niche tools. They are used by fire engineers and are not general purpose tools. If you are curious, go to youtube and search for "fire dynamics simulator".
