Design a new Header for Blender.org

31

Blender.org could do with a new fresh header graphic. Ton Roosendaal is calling all Blender artists to take a stab at it.

Hi artists!

With the risk of getting a flood here; here's another little contest. For the 2.57 release I'd also like to see a new header for the blender.org site. Is about time!

Here's the empty png to play with.

This is unrelated to making a new blender.org design in general, that project has to be started yet. Too busy with Blender itself still after 2.57 there's more time I hope.

Just post cool variations here. Header will be used when 2.57 gets out too. Reward: eternal gratitude + free pick in the blender.org e-store!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. They should make a hole new page for 2.6! Andrew Price brought some pretty good ideas during the Blender Conference last year. I strongly agree that the site could improve a lot more.

  2. I agree with Andrew Price that blender.org's design need to be more effective for novices. It's really important to attract more people so Blender will spread more.

I also agree with the other..... Price made a very nice comparation beetween the other 3D Tools' sites.... New graphic!

  4. Not possible, Andrew Price is again flooding on Blendernation.... :)

What would be cool... it's starting to see some arts from Blender and not just a tool to create a social community around or to make a fan base.

    Go on youtube for that...

  5. Hi Ton,

Hope this message finds you well.

Is there a reason for not adapting Andrew Price's insightful, new Blender index page, ideas?
A carefully chosen selection of gallery images, that fade one to another, would make for an appealing, eye catching site.

Your banner image competition would still be valid, instead of asking for one image, you could request a 'top 10' renders, to be used for a banner that fade cycles through the images.

Do hope everyone's comments, supporting a new, exciting direction for the Blender index page, will be considered.

    Have a great weekend.
    Best wishes,

    David

  6. Thanks for the Heads up Ton...

For those who are asking for the Main Blender Page to be changed/updated.., If you read carefully, There are currently too many other things to be done at this time.

I'm sure that after the very hard work of getting the wonderful Blender to 'stable release' has been done we can look forward to having a fully updated Blender site with all the bells and whistles. But until all of the currently developed features have been implemented, and documented, you will just have to use your imagination to find what you are looking for.

If it's not on the blender servers then there are plenty of Dev Blogs and Tutorial sites out there.

That being said, i would like to thank all Dev's, Coders and supporting persons for the work that has made blender what it is today. It is fast becoming the 'Most Ideal' tool for many tasks related to CG and to 3d Visualisation. And thank you to Ton for resurrecting Blender from the darkness, when the decision was made to go Open-Source..

Those who know of blenders beginnings are all so very thankful...

Being all-new to Blender, sometime I've read Blender's history. Ton was so heroic to save Blender and make it open-source. I was just using Blender 2.56 for 3 months, and have not found a single flaw, just plain perfections. I may not have the budget to try out others, but I think Blender can do what others can do, and maybe better. The gray color scheme looks futuristic, and contrary to others, the learning curve is never steep. Just 3 months and I am already into animation, the BGE, particles, and physics.

Continue the GREAT work, Blender Foundation! I thank everybody to make Blender as it is now.

    Looking forward to 2.57!

  8. LOL, maybe Price should put his money where his mouth is and design a page that - for now - fits over the current design but looks fresh.
Personally I doubt one small changed graphic would even be noticed by anyone.

And while many are busy working on the latest Blender, I can hardly believe it would not allow to have a new design for the Blender homepage at the same time. (Well I sota assume that the web-devs and the Blender-devs are different people, yes?)

While I am a fan of the dark gray for a long time I think the new way to go is.... bright and modern look. The Yellow banner provided with a small corner of graphic and a non-blender logo should be a large graphic with a small official Blender logo, you know, put the graphics on front, not some orange-generic-texture thingy. On it's own it might look cool but I personally think Blender render's should be the prominent thing for sush a banner.

Maybe people should use the PNG as a size/shape template, not a background template for a corner of a render.

    Good luck everyone!
