Dmitry Tabakerov is working on a Blender 2.56 script, which rebuilds the cube transition effect utilized in the new Discovery Channel theme.
Dmitry writes:
Some days ago I found this video: http://vimeo.com/6729924 and some tutorials of recreating this effect in Houdini in Cinema4D. I was impressed enought to start learning Blender Python (I had used Python some years ago for web-programming, but anyway I'm not a programmer) and started work to create tool for automated creation geometry, materials and animation in this style.

looks cool thanks for your hard work and keep it up.
sieht cool aus Dank für Ihre harte Arbeit und weiter so.
Thats a cool one. though I'd like to know if creating transitions to use in other video editing progams is possible. also I would like a website that teaches all about python scripting because as a Blender 3d noobie I'm in the dark when it comes to scripts

This sort of effect has been in video-editing programs for years, so it should be added to the VSE as a plugin wipe effect. Is that where it is going, or is it going to be some sort of mesh deformer?
Great post. I would like more articles. Thanks a lot!
