Capsule physics in blender 2.5

125

Pyhmec published a very impressive video demonstrating his current work on the physics engine which illustrates a work-flow combining the Game engine and real-time playback in Blender 2.5.

Pyhmec write:

Series of quick technical tests and demonstrations of some of the things I'm slowly working on.
In this series, I'm focusing on / almost exclusively exploiting Bullet Physics' (efficient) capsule primitive (see my previous Blender capsule videos). Everything is rigid body dynamics (no soft body). Still lots to do before I can turn this into an add-on; I also have some issues including capsules sticking to each other under certain circumstances, need to investigate. But over all it's working quite well so far.

I must say I am VERY happy to see this wonderful physics presentation paired with good shaders for a change...all to many good sims are ruined by faky materials.

  5. Great work man! I guess this is a parallel effort from aligorith's GSoC'10. I hope both projects could be merged to have a top-class rigid physics in blender.

  6. Tolle Arbeit Mann!

  7. Grote werk man!

  8. Grote werk man!

  9. Oh... my...
    I love it!
Congratulations to Pyhmec. Go check guy's other YouTube videos too.
    Crazy s...tuff.
    Keep up the good work!
BTW I would really like to try that stuff! Any builds or addon/plugin files available?

  10. Oh ... meine ... Ich liebe es! Herzlichen Glückwunsch an Pyhmec. Go check Kerl andere YouTube-Videos zu. Crazy s. .. Tuff.

  11. Oh ... mijn ... I love it! Proficiat aan Pyhmec. Ga te controleren of kerel andere YouTube-video's. Crazy s. .. tufsteen. Keep up the good work! Elke bouwt of addon / plugin-bestanden beschikbaar?

  12. Oh ... mijn ... I love it! Proficiat aan Pyhmec. Gaan controleren man andere YouTube-video's. Crazy s. .. Tufsteen. Keep up the good work! Elk gebouw of addon / plugin-bestanden beschikbaar?

  13. It looks great but I don't get it. Didn't the BGE have bullet physics before? What exactly is the Bullet Physics Capsule primitive that he introduced, and how is it different from what already exists in the BGE physics engine?

  17. Astounding!
I maintain, that with this kind of progress already, with Blender 2.5 not even done yet, Blender has the potential to blow past Autodesk products eventually. I think we should get competitive and match Maya and 3DS Max feature for feature. And then one up them. Blender is becoming awesome!

  18. Erstaunlich!

Blender is steeds geweldig!

  20. Amazing! Blender is altijd geweldig!

  21. Wow!

  24. creative king on

Wow, i must say this is totally amazing. was this done with blender 2.5? would love to know how, any suggestions?

  25. creative king on

  26. creative king on

  27. creative king on

  28. What is exactly done? I don't understand the news.

Is a set of scripts using the engine Bullet?
Or is it improvement done in the engine itself?

    Who is Phymec? :)

  29. I read it, but I disagree with Ton on this one. I live in Hollywood and have worked in the "Industry" on and off for a long time. The entertainment industry drives the software that is taught at art schools. That, in turn, dictates what students are "Forced" to learn. That limits Blender's support at large. This is a big hurdle for Blender to overcome. Acceptance in the entertainment industry is key.

Blender's lack of respect here is palpable, and unnecessary. The 2.5 series has the potential to draw on talented programmers from around the world. There is no reason that it can't compete head to head with this talent pool.

I must say I don't really understand the question. If we can make Blender the best 3D app in the world, why wouldn't we? Competitiveness is what drives products forward. It's a good thing.

  31. @Terrachild: I'm sorry but I totally disagree with you and I have my arguments for that but we would get totally off topic discussing that here, so I'll keep it short: there is no such thing as the best app in the world. What works for you works for you and that's it, wether that is 3ds max, maya, houdini, softimage or blender or whatever. So it's useless to compete with the apps that "the industry" uses. Blender is aiming at hobbyist, freelancers and small studios. That is where it's niche in the market is and that is what it is good at. And when someone has mastered the art of 3d as such he can always switch app as needed, if he wants to land a job in "the industry". Learning an app is easier than learnning the art it self. The app is just a tool. Nothing more.

  32. If off-topic discussions were a problem here then this site would have been shut-down long ago.

There are many ways to judge applications. Industry respect and market share; demand for jobs requiring particular software knowledge, etc. In addition to more subjective measurement techniques like judging the quality of work produced by different packages. By all of these standards, Blender suffers. In some areas Blender is superior, but not many.

Ton himself ticks of one area after another, in that old article, that you provided a link to above, in which Blender is inferior to the other packages. He left many out though. I try to promote the idea that, gee...wouldn't it be nice to be able to say Blender has the best renderer, Blender has the best nurbs tools, Blender has the best character studio, and this always gets some people upset. Why? I'm sure Ton would love to be able to say that.

Your point that you can easily switch between applications once you know how to use one is not accurate. These programs are prohibitively expensive. Just try that on for size when you apply for a job at a graphics company. They'll chuckle at your expense, and say goodbye. It's happened to me, and countless others.

You seem to bow down to the cult of Ton, I like to call it. He seems like a nice guy an he's done wonders with Blender, but Blender can be so much more than it is. Just because Ton says Blender is aimed at hobbyists doesn't mean that's the final word. Independent development outside his control can push it forward. He can be convinced otherwise. You're just repeating what he says.

You remind of that guy that hassled Blenderguru's Andrew Price at the Blender conference for daring to greatly expand Blender's user base. I still don't understand that guy.

There seems to be a mentality with many Blender users that small is good enough. That aiming for hobbyists is good enough. That a shoddy website is good enough. Where does that mentality come from?

Finally, you totally ignore the main point of my argument, that getting schools to teach Blender is the way to grow it's user base, today's students are the future of Blender. Blender is not taken seriously at graphics schools for one simple reason...That's not where the jobs are.

You say you "TOTALLY DISAGREE" with me about trying to make Blender the best.
Why would anybody disagree with that?

I'm sure the vast majority of Blender users would like to have bragging rights to that status. And more importantly, the job opportunities that would come from that status.

  33. Yes, I am documenting bugs.
Just found a new one I believe involving Full Scene Copy with animation data.
I hope to submit code eventually.
