Another great display of BGE capabilities

Again martinsupitis provides us with a great exhibition, of the ever-improving, BGE.

  1. Very very cool demo. Makes me wonder why more things aren't made with BGE, given the power it has. Hopefully demos like this one will give people confidence that the BGE is upto the task.

That plus a few tutorials or 10 would also help. But maybe I am too much of a dreamer :)

  2. Sehr, sehr cool Demo.

  3. @terrywallwork

I tried using BGE to make a game a few months ago. They don't have mouse look implemented, so you have to import a python script, which I was unable to convince to work. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, if you use BGE you're pretty much tied to Python, which is a bit of a deal-breaker for those of us who aren't big fans of Python.

  6. @Bart K.:

Yeah, there are ways around the mouselook thing. I know I've tested a few games that have done it.

And yes, you're going to have to use Python eventually; the logic bricks can only get you so far. Oh well, it's also great for those of us who *love* python ;)

  8. @Christopher

My point with mouselook is that it's pretty basic functionality that ought to be available in a logic brick -- it would make it a lot easier to throw together snazzy-looking game prototypes.

As for Python, well, I'd love to see Blender offering bindings for other languages. I'm partial to C++ and JavaScript myself, and I'd be a lot more inclined to use BGE if it had those capabilities.

  10. @martinsupitis: Wait a minute, if environment maps are pre-baked, how can they be dynamic? (this is awesome, by the way).

@Bart K.: Not that I know what I'm talking about, but wouldn't multiple scripting languages require multiple APIs? Can you imagine trying to maintain all of that?

  12. @Bart K. - I personally love to use Python - it's a full library for manipulating strings, arrays, dictionaries, etc. without having to have things like 'float' or 'int' in front of everything. However, for those who just would rather use another programming language, there are wrappers - swig is one. However, Python is already an interpreted language, so to interpret another language into that one to be interpreted, well, it probably wouldn't be worth it.

@Gryphon - Yes, it would be another set of functions and variables that would have to be implemented to work with C++ (I think). It really wouldn't be worth it.

    http://www.swig.org/

  14. I don't want to sound like a fanboy but I seriously believe Blender's BGE is the world's best game engine. I've never seen anything like these visuals in any other game, including console based ones. The lighting is absolutely spectacular and gives it an eerily realistic atmosphere.

  17. Wow! Where can we find SOME information about making those dynamic environment maps? I've tried it with fake video texture, but the result is not very precise. Some link or anything else?

  18. Wow!

  19. C'mon mates, this one is really interesting experiments with BGE but it's only a small experiment for now. There is no serious shaders, it's a small room with small count of polys, there's no enemy's or NPC's or whatever to interact with. I can go on, animations, rigid body, particles blah blah blah. I like to watch such impressive pieces maded with BGE, but we can't put it with Unity, C4 etc. in a one row for now.
But again - this one looks great with Mirrors Edge like style, good luck in future works mates!

  21. @DimitrisC,
The CryEngine demos look incredible, BUT the question is what sort of hardware would be needed to run it with all those effects and resolution. Here I at least know it runs on an average modern machine, at least I believe so.

  23. Hello!

    Really cool!
What makes it even more great is beautiful music.
    what band is it?

Blender just keep making people drop the jaws on the floor in cool peoples' hands.

  24. Hallo! Wirklich cool!

  25. Pretty sweet demo. I love the visual stuff people do with the BGE but the problem is it's all so scattered and undocumented that actually applying it is very frustrating. I'd love it if someone went to the trouble of doing a "bge for dummies" with all these sexy effects explained as well as things like mouse look, decals, anim blending, AI and the like.

  27. Alex Delderfield (AD-Edge) on

Great to see all these things Martinsh is bringing to BGE, exciting stuff.

@Olaf, you obviously havent played many games or used any other game engines....... :/

  28. Alex Delderfield (AD-Edge) on

  29. Chris Martin on

The power of the BGE is still massively underpowered and still appears to be a neglected aspect of Blender as far as development is concerned. I wish examples like this would encourage developers to pay attention at the possibilities that the engine can do and further develop this to make it all possible.

  30. Chris Martin on

  31. Hey,

This looks coooool but.... I think there are a few tricks. The balls don't reflect anything except the walls and the windows. The balls don't reflect the other balls or the wooden "things" (sorry, I am from Germany and there are words you don't learn at school :-D).

  36. I am a Python programmer since the v1.4 days, and as much much as I love the expressive power of thr language, it will always be slower that some of the newer kids on the block in the scripting work, actually *because* of a number of the key language constructions. Google Python + JIT for detials. Modern Python had some JIT capabilities now, but compared to the e.g. V8 Javascript engine or perhaps more interesting as far as I am concerned LuaJIT, Python will always be a drag on performance for BGE.

  38. @Jamed
Disney made an MMORPG in Python (Pirates of the Caribbean), so I don't think it's that much of a drag. Although, I think Lua support wouldn't be hard to do with its Alien library (call methods by name from DLL/.so).

  40. Seriously, it's almost impossible not to compare it with Frostbite Engine's visuals, since it was used in the game Mirror's Edge.

    It's epic, great job man.
