Free e-book: making of realistic airplane with Blender (in Polish)

57

Witold Jaworski has published an amazingly detailed book on airplane modeling with Blender. It's in Polish, but published under a CC license. Anyone interested in doing an English tranlslation?

Witold writes:

Hi, I have just finished an e-book about creating realistic aviation model with Blender, GIMP and Inkscape. The first edition is a free e-book (on CC license), written in Polish. Its reader may have no previous experience in computer graphic. It teaches, step by step, how to create the airplane, shown on the enclosed picture (with all textures, moveable parts, and other stuff). First edition of this book contains 1112 pages and over 3600 pictures. It was huge project, which took me nearly 3 years to complete.  I have used the actual “official” Blender version here: 2.49b. (Blender 2.5/26 will be used in eventual future editions).

You can find its abstract in English, the book itself (in Polish), and accompanying materials, at http://airplanes3d.net/wm-000_e.xml.

  1. It is a great book! Let's hope there is gonna be an English version for Blender 2.56 too. Congratulations and keep up the good work!!!
    Christian.

  2. Thank you, @twitcher.

I tried to do a "WSIWG book" with non - trivial model. I think, that overcoming the real problems with the real model is the best way to master the whole process.

BTW, We "are cross-writing" each other replies, at this moment :)

  3. Thank you Witold! This ebook is a treasure! Even though I can't read Polish, the images describing the steps are extremely valuable information! I"m sure the Blender modelers at military meshes will rejoice!

Thank you again for your hard work! Truly appreciate it!

  4. the besk book ever seen on blender...if we can read an ENG version :( Polish are hard to translate also with google ...the 3D terminology is too hard for google.

  5. @Urenze, @Eager: could you precise, which link?
I have checked, and cannot see any errors.

(The best way - give me its address. It appears in the status bar of your browser, when your mouse is over the link.
And the commont tip: the link to the book is direct link to the PDF file. To download it, instead opening in your browser, just click on it with the right mouse button. Then, from teh context menu, select "Save Target As..." (or equivalent in the language of your browser))

  6. This is what I get when I click on that link:

    Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at airplanes3d.net.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Now, with Google I could open a cached page, but the PDF links there were not working either.

    Thanks again!

  7. Thank you, @Urenze.

Could you try to start just with one of following addresses:
    http://airplanes3d.net
    http://www.airplanes3d.net
    http://samoloty3d.pl
    http://www.samoloty3d.pl
    http://samoloty.wjaworski.pl

(it will open the main page of this site)?

Tell me about the result, This way I would like to determine, if you have problems with DNS, or the rare *.xml extension of my pages creates the problem for your computer...
You are using Firefox, I suppose?

  8. Thank you, @Urenze.
My first reply to your report was stopped by the anty-spam automat: I have tried to give too many addresses to check :)

Could you try to start just with the main page of this site:
    airplanes3d.net
or (it is its Polish address):
    samoloty3d.pl

(it will open the main page of this site)?

Tell me about the result, This way I would like to determine, if you have problems with DNS, or the rare *.xml extension of my pages creates the problem for your computer…
You are using Firefox, I suppose?

  9. The Polish address lasts longer to present the error message. In the lower bar of the browser, I can read "transferring data from kropka.onet.pl" whilst the page is blank, and then it displays the error message.

  10. "Saving target as.." gives me the following error: "C:\Users\Urenze\Downloads\wm-000_e.xml could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator."

  11. @Urenze, I have looked at "uncle google" and find that "such error occurs when an IPv6 computer tries to connect a site, which uses both IPv4 and IPv6". I have not digged too deply into this technicals, it seems that we were trapped by the new technology :).

Well, in fact my host operator has informed me that they implemented full IPv6 spec...
Maybe the simplest solution is: try tomorrow, from another computer, connected to another point of the network (i.e. Internet operator), if it is possible.

  12. A true masterpiece. Your contribution will raise the consciousness and skill of the entire community
(or at least me) :-) Your book is exactly what I've been looking for to transform my Blender
and realistic modeling skills. I'll now be able to properly begin modeling the Convair B36-D for my Dad.
I don't know Polish but I can understand pictures.
    Congratulations and Thank you Witold!

  13. The amount of detail and knowledge put into this work is absolutely mind-boggling. It's actually a very thorough introduction to the 3 open source applications. And, luckily, I'm Polish :)

  14. I wish I could read polish but you have put in a massive amount of work into this. This is simply the best and most in detailed hard surface modeling tutorial I have seen. If you really want to learn and master this subject in Blender than you could do no better than to dedicate lots of time and go through this tutorial from the first page to the last. If after 1112 pages later you can't model any type of machine that you can dream of than I would put you down to a lost cause 5/5.

  15. Witold,
your book is an amazing work, congratulation!
Thank you very much for sharing it with us.
For me an impulse to write the manual for CADtools in Polish first. ;)

I would like to support your efforts with small donation (20€).
Please set up a link to your pay-account here or on the homepage?

  16. Thank you for this positive feedback.
Because of he language of this book, I have not expected that it will be useful for the whole Community. (It is a hard test for the readibility of its illustraions. isn't it?)

@Urenze: I have asked operator of my virtual server, about your problem. I do not know, if they will find solution. Unfortunately, there is not any mirror of my content (I have looked, yesterday if somebody copied to one of share-servers, but not yet).

@migius: Thank you very much! I have not expected any donations, so I am not well prepared to receive them.... Belive me, that just your willingness to do it is a great reward for me! Anyway, I think it will be more fair, to get them when there will be an English edition, for Blender 2.5/2.6 of this book (2012?). So I will try to do my best, but it is better to do it after the book will be given to the Community. :).

  17. @Witold Thanks! I am now asking friends and family in Mexico and Australia to check if they can download it for me from there (I'm in Spain). I hope they can!

I was modeling a JU88, but got derailed by the sheer skill and attention that is required to do it properly. I'm not yet there, so you can imagine how happy I was to read that this is THE tutorial on the subject.

Come on, time zone differences, move along! It's 5:40 am in Mexico City, 3:40 am in Tijuana; people there are still asleep. But it is 10:40 pm in Melbourne... my brother must be dining or doing stuff offline... damn!

    Cheers!

  18. Hi, sorry my computer went down last night that's why I couldn't give any response. I still can't get to download the pdf.

Urenze I'm in Spain too right now (I'm french), maybe it has something to do with that!

    Thx

  19. @Eager Not surprised. I can bet they have done nothing to implement IPV6 handling yet. You will need to do as I have done: ask someone abroad to download it for you, and then to dropbox it (although my relative hasn't done it yet XD ).

  20. Hi speaking as of now, i can download the tutorial (denmark). Maybe this should be uploaded to mediafire or some other sharing site? :)

Taking a look at the tutorial now ;)

  21. Wow, a lot of pages to translate - it might be easier/faster to just learn to read Polish, rather than translate the entire thing ;-)

Awesome book, thanks. Now, where did I leave that Polish grammar book and the dictionary?

  22. Greetings Witold,

What a superb and generous effort. If anything were to encourage someone to study Polish, this would be it. However, that would take more time than most of us have. Would you consider releasing a PDF that allowed us to copy and paste text blocks into a translator? I started typing it into Google Translate manually and it worked very well, but it probably would be quicker to learn Polish than do it that way. An non copy-restricted file would be most helpful. Of course that would open your words to direct theft from all the unscrupulous little snivelers lurking in the shadows out there, so if you'd rather not do that I/we would understand. Thanks again, anyway. A beautiful work.

  23. @PWT
Do you mean you can't copy/paste text from the ebook? I can. At least on Ubuntu's default document viewer. Maybe some restrictions work on Windows, I don't know.

  24. @PWT, in fact, I have restricted the copy/paste feature. It may happen, that the English version of this book will be a paid e-book, so I try to minimize the potential problems, this way.
On the other hand, it is very interesting what Pawel has written - I have to check it on my Ubuntu, at home :). Maybe I have belived in these bit flags more seriously, than the Linux guys?

  25. Dear Witold! I will gladly pay for an English translated version of your E-book! I simply love the cross-section script! Great modeling tool indeed!

  26. Hey Witold, besides the book, the scripts in your page are very cool! Didn't try them yet but congrats for both the book and the scripts, and thanks for sharing!
