Alice in Wonderland

22

David Revoy, Art Director of Sintel, has won a prestigious CGChoice award by CGSociety. His (2D) work is a wonderful interpretation of Alice in Wonderland with countless hidden details. David describes the creation process in great detail.

From CGSociety:

As Art Director of the Blender Foundation's 'Sintel' Open-Source film project, David Revoy wanted to 'stay busy' and decided to enter the 'Alice in Wonderland' 3DVF contest just after finishing the authoring of his DVD tutorials titled 'Chaos&Evolutions'

"During Sintel, I had to find a way to use only Open-Source software to do all the concept art," he says. "That's why I learned how to use a Linux system's Mint , GIMP , Mypaint and Al.Chemy instead of my Photoshop and Painter.

That wasn't easy because it is so different. The workflow is not the same at all."

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Gratz david, well deserved award and interesting article :)

@3dementia the article on his piece is now out, think that's the reason it's featured on bn

  2. Stoned picture :))
I like it except Cheshir Cat's face and Rabbit's face too.
In these transitions between different scenes in one picture I recognize something ;)
Anyway - I'm a lot weaker against this awesome art!

  3. Hi and thanks Bart for publishing this to share with the Blender community :)

@ all and friends : thanks for the comments a lot :)

@3dementia : The award is effectively old ( july/august 2010 ) , the fresh news as said month3D is the publishing 2 days ago of the 'making of' done as a CGs article. And thanks CGs for proposing me a making of with 100% 2D FLOSS. A big CG proof industry is not closed and still curious about FLOSS.

  4. It's an interesting image. But I've looked at his other works and I have to say I like some of them a lot more than this one! Some are really great.

  5. David,

    Sincerement votre,

    PIXNLOVE

  6. Where's the Mad Hatter? Anyways... dude! That drawing is indeed epic! Congrats. Did you use a tablet? Because i can't find myself doing mouse work with this. I really love how detailed you are here.

    ...

I'm still staring at you artwork... gonna download it and stare some more... And try to figure out how you did this through Gimp, Mypaint, and Al.Chemy.

  7. @Brian : Thanks !

    @MARTS : Martsmonde ? here too :D ? Cool ! Thx !

@Sfepa : and you are the boss of the watercolor with Mypaint :) I really enjoy your work about.

@Pixnlove : Merci de m'avoir rechargé les batteries avec ce super commentaire. C'est noël pour moi de savoir que C&E peu aider. Merci encore !

@d4rk : Hey hey, the Mad Hatter is on the illustration ; check inside the trunk of the tree. And about the tablet, I used a Wacom Intuos 4 A5 ; I have an article on my blog explaining my choices about tablet.
I hope the 'making of' on CGsociety will guide you if you are instterested by the way to do it ; and my DVD Chaos&Evolutions on the Blender e-shop or on torrent can help you too :) Thanks for the comments !
