Commander's Coin Made in Blender

20

Studio Greenleaf gives a step-by-step description of the design process of a "Commander's Coin".

BnBGobo99 writes:

[In the US Army] Every military commander has his or her own coin that the commander personally gives out as tokens of appreciation for outstanding job performance, exemplary service, or above-and-beyond actions.  My commander gave me the task of creating her coin, and I have documented the design process from initial concept to finished product.

Thank you for taking a look!

  1. How sad it is that something with a beautiful philosophy behind it like blender is being used in an organization that kills human beings.

  2. 3 comments before the BS starts... better than average!

Would love to know more about the process; both in regards to the coins manufacture and how the design is transferred from a 3D template to the finished product.

  3. @CorsairX, In a response to Rickyblender's comment on the blog page, I went into a little bit more detail about the process of physically making the coin itself. In short, just one coin will run you $200 because of the die-making process, but after 200 coins it ended up costing about $5-6 each. They used a simplified 3d model of the coin to CNC-mill a large version, which they then used a pantograph machine to make the coin-sized die for press-stamping blanks. I think something like this would be a great idea for a Blender Conference or SIGGRAPH door-give-away.

@Justin: Thank you for your service! ::thumbs up::

Thanks for the comments everybody! It was fun to make, and even more fun to be able to actually take something that was created in Blender and hold it in your hand. :)

  4. very good!

about the fact it's a thing related to war...
perhaps we can understand a similar fact after some century, may be not so much...
nobody is sad if Miller writes 300, but now dead people of that war has become something we think about to study old facts, different civilizations... i don't know if it's right... the comic book is a masterpiece, for me...

and now our taxes go also to weapons... it's so hard and sad, but that's life...
may be through freedom (and blender is freedom) we can make this world just a bit better, we cannot stop wars with it.. nor with songs.... :-(

  5. Make one with obama and a "4 guys walk into a bar".
Sad that blendernation is being used for military propaganda. If there are no standards, should we get back to the user submitted news?
I mean, do you realize that there may be iranians accessing the site? If you linked to a site that joked happily and merrily about obama's assassination, do you think that all north american audience would enjoy?

We come here to see blender news, not to be offended by some military crap.

  6. @ janitor and meialua:

I realize this is an international forum, however to spout off such (to put it as mildly as I am able) ill-informed comments demands a response.

I could go into a litany of how incredibly asinine and inflammatory your statements were but sadly I know how little effect that would have. So allow me to say this, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.

No matter your nationality you should be able to follow this guideline.

If you pay someone a complement and insult them in the same breath then you are hiding your insult, this is called being passive aggressive. It's annoying don't do it.

  7. YAY! Thumbsup for studio greenleaf <3 :)
Awesome coin and rundown of the process!
Thanks for sharing this Bunny, keep up the great work!

Be aware of the coin's natural enemies...Defender and Space Invaders Coin-Ops :P

  8. This isn't "celebrating war," it's showcasing a work of art by a member of the Blender community who happens to be in the military. The coins themselves don't even carry a political message. Lets just appreciate the coins for the art they are.

  9. That's wonderful detail on the coin. Beautiful.

@LL: That could be, but usually they're just hypocrites whose comfortable lives never fell under a dictator's control. Force them to work one year longer before retirement, force them to actually pay for their university degrees, or watch their favorite team lose a game, and see how violent they'll become.

  10. @Hordak: I personally agree with the spirit, if not the expression, of LL's statement. However, calling decent people "hypocrites" and implying they're lazy is the wrong way to go about things. They might be hypocrites, they might be lzy, but many of them aren't and calling them that will further their opinions of their opposition. If we're going to disagree, let's do it respectfully.
