Blender Development Meeting Notes, Dec 5, 2010.

16

Mainly housekeeping this week: updates on Projects.blender.org, bugtracking and branche merging.

Ton Roosendaal writes:

Hi all,

1) General notes

  • Nathan Letwory will migrate projects.blender.org to new FusionForge. That will be a big step forward for trackers and searching issues! In order too have a smooth transfer, we need to shutdown access to svn and gforge for a day. This will be announced here in time.
  • Ton will remove gforge bf-blender project account of 2 year inactive developers. Active participants in this mailing list or IRC can keep accounts. In case I made mistake, just poke me!
  • The new projects.blender.org will not allow to register own projects anymore. This will be now "on request", and limited to projects related to Blender.
  • The code.blender.org

might also arrive this week. Francisco Siddi volunteered to do the WordPress skin and navigation.

2) Blender 2.5 project

  • Tracker went down nicely last week, but reports still stream in! Work on stabilizing will continue.
  • Patch for allowing custom names for sockets in group nodes gets accepted.

3) Other projects, branches

  • Meeting discussed whether (parts of) branches can alreade be merge. New particle code has several improvements that will fix todo list issues. Particle devs decided to wait still. Janne Karhu will at least bring back per-particle RGBA animation, based on Material fcurves. (Like 2.4)
  • In general: we wait with merging branches until 2.5x has stable release!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. There still work needed to the blender render-er, I believe is also part of the road map development too. Maybe in a month or two seeing a stable release. Give us a very nice Christmas gift. The blender community deserved it.

  2. Argh I cant wait anymore for the stable 2.5 :( I need it mainly to make python script and addons and obviously the missing documentation prevent me to do anything useful with the current beta. If only someone will (stabilize, and) publish a complete reference to the API... I think blender is the most versatile 3d cg tools around, it is terrible to be forced to wait inactively, I even thinked of join development but Im not that good! In any case, thanks for ever for blender and all your works and efforts to make it the best and the only viable option for me.
In the meantime I will continue to check daily on blendernation for the release announcement! Please make it quick, I'M BLOCKED!

  3. Thanks again devs for the insight.
I feel a littele bit sad that merging branches still has to wait, but okay, the devs are the ones that know the right moment for this. (wich is prbabaly a main difference to strictly commercially run closed-sources, where the business-mgr or the timeline tells when the product is finished and will be sold, regardless of its development-state. Don't we know those banana-software).

    And hey:
"Tracker went down nicely last week, but reports still stream in! Work on stabilizing will continue."

start a rocket: the Blender 2.5 Bug Tracker went down below the magic number 100! (right now at 93, sometimes rising, sometimes going down, but never again over 100 i pray !)

  4. "...and many bugs swarmed before Ton. He squashed 50 to his left, and 50 to his right. He didn't think it too many. And lo, the Blender bugs looked upon the carnage that He had wrought upon their bretheren... and they were afraid."

  5. Thanks a lot for the update and the hardwork. Me too I'm waiting patiently for a stable version. I work personally with Yafaray and a friend of mine with whom I'm making a small game uses Ogre3D. Both soft are waiting for a stable version to move forward and "integrate" those in blender 2.5x.

So I'm really impatient for what coming next.

Thanks again to Ton and the Devs.

  6. I am happy to be only a rookie in Blender, because I have been working with it as an amateur player since 2005. Poor professionals which need to wait for the stable release, but I am very happy using Blender 2.5 to do my simple models and animations. Sometimes I miss something during the render process, but it is not a problem to me. I only use it for fun. The recently fantastic UI upgrade makes me linked to 2.5. I can't use anymore the old 2.49 version. ;)

As you can see we have two users profiles. Ones need the state of art tool, but others are very happy with the current tool.

Keep walking Blender's developers. All of you are in the right way.
