Steampunk Spaceship Modeling Tutorial

11

Paul Caggegi from the Process Diary is working on a steampunk project, and he's explaining how to do it.

Paul Caggegi writes:

I've been invited to participate in a small side-project, a Steampunk Anthology, by Samuel Kirkman, and the fine folks over at the illopond.

I submitted a short story, which I will produce as an eight-page comic, and they loved it. I am in the process of creating the props, sets, and scenery in Blender, and thumbnailing the panels and pages. I thought I would document the modeling process of one of the pieces - a spacecraft done in the Steampunk style. I've created a two-part series on the modeling process, which I hope shows you a few methods you might be able to use. The model was created in the latest version of Blender (2.55).

To learn more about the up-and-coming project, head over to illopond.com You can see the fine work the other artists involved are producing for this 8 story anthology!

  1. Nice, non-linkifyed links :D
I'll go there now the "hard" way (copy+paste) but it would be very helpful if the links where actual links :)

  2. Yay, working links :D

Watched the first part and it's really nice.
I especially liked the usage of curves to easily pinch holes in rings and such.
Not exactly new for me but I'm quite sure, it'll be very helpful for a lot of others.

  3. I'm having trouble getting the array modifier to work with the booster rockets. For some strange reason when I add the array around the empty it just scales it progressively larger off into space.. ??

  4. Had the same problem with Array Modifier on 2.55, which I hadn't when I used 2.49. Solved that making duplicates that I rotated.
Very cool tutorials Paul. And nice project on illopond forum :-) Keep up the great work! Bernard

  5. Hey guys! Cheers for the comments. I try to use the simplest methods to get the job done. If it covers old ground, it's usually because that's the priority. @AndreasL - try switching your array modifier from "Relative" to "Constant".

  6. @lolko7 - I'm definitely thinking about it. It's certainly one subject I wish to tackle: render node compositor for export to photoshop/gimp as layered file. I'll be doing a bunch of research over the Xmas break to make sure I get the best methods down pat.
