Sintel the Game - Update

21

We mentioned Sintel the Game back in July. Here's a status update on the project and an excellent preview!

John Buresh writes:

Part of our team attended the pre-premier of Sintel in Amsterdam a while back and we had the wonderful opportunity to show the Durian team a small demo of our game the next day. You can watch a video of Colin playing the demo here:

Focus since then has been on character modeling and re-thinking our workflow. David wrote a post about our modeling workflow on our blog as well as a time-lapse video.

A lot of our levels are being re-made (some entirely) so forgive us for the lack of in-game screenshots on our site. There will be updates in that regard in the upcoming weeks.

We've also re-worked our Sintel character to look more easy on the eyes. Although she isn't finished, we think we've improved her a lot. Noah re-did the hair entirely and re-designed the way we did character's eyes. You can read more about it here.

Also, we are still looking for character animators! Email jon(at)sintelgame(dot)org) if interested!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. anon: punished for being happy? :D -should see me when I get a trace that says "works" on a screen while coding :) followed by: "you know what this means!?? -we can go to mickey dee's now !" then by: "wait.. wait.. no.. this one's easy to crash -needs handlers and character converters for those trigger happy sql injectors out there.."

  2. Sorry, but it's awful. I mean it is interesting as a test or a something, but considering it's like a game (even like an alpha) just not right. Don't get me wrong, didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, just some critics )

  3. I personally think that it looks quite professional as a game. It was already stated to be in pre-alpha stages, so with more work, it seems like it'll be good.

  4. Damaged: well, they're probably testing the groundwork for everything -for all you know, you're probably looking at proxies.

  5. If this has been done using the Blender Game engine well this is really great...
But if you are serious about making a complete game, you could use blender
as a modeling and animation package but as the engine for a complete game...
    I am not sure...

  6. Love the progress on the game. I don't know what your plans are but I could imagine a combat system similar to Batman: Arkham Asylum would work really well with for the game. I can imagine that would be quite the undertaking though, I think maybe look at the combat in Beyond Good and Evil as an example of what would be more feasable.

Looking forward to seeing more from you guys.

  7. I'll have to second yoff on the timelapse, the chin I can live with, especially from a distance, but the ear could use some touch up. Otherwise it's an awesome model, the ear is just off putting.

  8. That-is-just-sweeeeeet! Colin was very ecstatic! hehe! I'm sure I will be too if I'm in his position. Will this beat Devil May Cry when it's super done done done? Hehehe! ;)

  9. Haha...both Colin and Ton were way too easily amused by the disintegrating logo. I can see the problem with showing something in such an early stage, but at the same time it sets a bench mark for the final product. In a refined final game Colin could sit down, play it, enjoy it, and then recall with laughter this very early version. It's looking like a great start regardless...some quality animators, some scripting fixes and better camera handling to avoid foreground obstacles and this will shape up nicely.

  10. @Kevin Brubeck Unhammer:
    Yeah. And, obviously, Yo Frankie.
Still, a few of those games have NOT been made in BGE, only modelled/textured there. But most HAVE been completely made in Blender, including Yo Frankie.

  11. I think that the critics are just so used to most games being beta now when they are released that they think that pre-alpha must mean that its nearly finished.

    Looks pretty good so far.

  12. It looks nice so far. Needs more work for sure but you have made quite a job already. Making a whole game though, requires some awesome amount of work. The bigger the team the better, if you got things organised well enough. But you should open up a bit more I think. Ask for people to join or contribute models and such. What this project needs is more weight put into animations, especially the fight animations and there seems to be no fight stance nor defence moves. Or Colin just didn't use it... More weight to the animations including shaking camera or at least more dynamic camera. And more random stuff to the scene.

So far though, it's really nicely done and you've done some great work with this. Real nice start. If you got the sub-stories right, interesting quests with individual stories, LOTS of interesting items/weapons to collect, money balance right, interesting townsmen, interesting factions and nice way to tell all this, you're in for the win. :D Call Bethesda for reference. :3 But keep it up and this will go far.

  13. Great job on the game so far, the people who made sintel seem very impressed. must be extra special for them to see an interactive version of their movie.
