Aqsis is an Open source 3D rendering solution adhering to the RenderMan standard. Ted Gocek writes us that the Aqsis team has been working hard on the new core. Leon Atkinson (Renderguy) was at the Blender Conference to demonstrate some of their latest developments. They are also migrating from FLTK to QT4 for the interface and here they show us their screen cast of the interactive viewer for RIB editing.

So, is this another alternative renderer for Blender?
Will it be able to render BI like images in real time?
As said many times before, cutting out BI from Blender and Implementing an external renderer that would come with Blender is probably the best that can be done.
And if this thing can produce BI like images 1000 times faster, i think it's the best choice to be the new BI. Just my 2 cents.

Just to clarify, this is not a demonstration of an interactive viewer for RIB editing. This is the newly under development main core. So, what you're seeing there is the actual renderer, rendering microplygons (Reyes) at 40 fps. We're just displaying it in an interactive framebuffer, rather than bucket at a time, to show how fast it really is. It's not using GPU, purely CPU, exactly what you'll get when you render with Aqsis.
I should also point out that it's not complete yet, this is the first demonstrable stage of the core re-engineer, there's more still to go in before it's even up to current Aqsis feature levels, but rest assured, when it's finished, this is going to be fast.

@creator of the video: If there is nothing to say, dont say: "uh", "uhm", "ahhh" every other 2 or 5 seconds. This is increasingly annoying and yields no information. Just pause speaking if there is nothing to say.

@timothy: Yes, guilty as charged; I noticed this myself before publishing it but I couldn't be bothered to record it yet again (I already recorded it twice). I probably would have if I'd realized my umming and aahing would receive so many views ;-)
