Juan Carlos Montes writes:

This is a music video I directed, illustrated and animated for a Puerto Rican band called Calle 13. The characters and animations were done entirely in Blender 3D. I also used 3D Coat for the textures and AfterEffects for compositing. The opening and closing scenes of the video were done by NEODG.

  1. This was a great animation/music video. It had a very Tim Burton feel to it. One of the better works I have ever seen with Blender.

  2. Very Artistic, but if you are less than 21, ¡dont see it!

  3. Good Job Juan!

Can you tell us how was the whole production process (i.e. did you have any budget given by Sony, did you go through any meetings with Sony to approve or disapprove shots, which were the major hassles or bottlenecks you had to overcome).

    All the best.

  4. Awesome!!! A Tim Borton style animation, especially done for a Puerto Ricans music group
now blender will have higher status in the arena of main steam music production. We Puerto Ricans help bridge the arts in many ways.

  5. i have never gotten into Calle 13, they are just so random and inconsistent, with their music, it throws me off, but i really like this video, its great and this time the song was pretty good, i may be a bit biased though seeing how atrevete is still being played day and night where i am, its driving me up the wall

  6. More and more artist should seek out their work to be done in blender,
instead of private close source companies

  7. Really great movie ! One of the best works made with Blender that I've seen so far.

I didn't understood everything as I haven't learnt spanish, but great song as well at first glance !

    Congratulations.

    LC

  9. Wow. Creepy songs and creepy animation. Skillfully done, but I don't think I'd ever want to animate something so dark.

  10. I didn't realize that the sound on my PC wasn't working the first time I watched this video. Let me tell you: The video without the music is reeeeally disturbing.

  12. Well, before I comment, I want to mention that did like Sintel.
What does this have to do with Sintel?
Well, this is the level of artistry I was hoping for from Sintel.

I'm one of those people that want to shut up the critics from Maya, and Max regarding Blender's inferiority. As such, I was disappointed that Sintel didn't put those people in their place.

I'm sure the Durian team did their best, but if this guy can crank out something this good virtually alone, then why couldn't a team of people with hundreds of thousands of Euros do better with Sintel?

If the Blender foundation is going to make another open-movie project, then please realize that the quality of the work is an advertisement for Blender. Hire better animators, concentrate more on lighting, reduce the length of the finished product to better match the resources available, etc.

Can we please finally get a piece of work from the Blender foundation that really wows people?

  13. @Terrachild: Why don`t you stop complaining, get your ass back to work an do something that wows people. I don`t think a creepy musicvideo (don't get me wrong i love this kinda stuff) will shut up anybody and at least it`s not about to shut up people. Offtopic anyway...

@topic: Nice video, veryvery Burtonesque, from the first second a was reminded the old Beetlejuice stuff Burton did. Cool work.

  14. Why everybody says "Tim Burton like stuff"

This is Juan Carlos Montes style!

    Cheers to him.

By the way and also offtopic, Tim Burtom is inspirated by Ladislas Starevich (1882 - 1965) but Burton has a wide biger budget to do any given idea than Starevich. Study a little more the european animation history, I sure Burton does.

  15. Gryphon: If you think the video without the music is distrubing you shoud see it understanding the lyric :-)

    Fantastic work!!!

  16. Excelente trabajo.... Felicitaciones. Felicitaciones!!!!
