  • lots of point light fixes, most notably with IES data (finally works as expected)
  • spot light fix
  • photon map improvements
  • stop using OpenGL in the GUI (the --noopengl option to luxrender is no more)
  • new velvet material
  • new mattetranslucent option to enforce energy conservation
  • new option to the glossy material to get a more velvety look
  • fix volume grid crash
  • fix loopsubdiv UV interpolation bug

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. The switch to DirectX is a welcome addition as the GUI lagged greatly on my new Windows 7 machine! Why anyone bothers using OpenGL these days is beyond me.

  2. @samiroquai
Unless you were deliberately planting some delicious flame-bait I suggest reading up on what DirectX and OpenGL actually are. Not using one library doesn't necessarily mean using the other.

  3. Probably great news -
Don't get it to work though.
Blender tells me export has finished and then nothing happens.
Followed the link posted from Grandmaster B.
    Anyway...

  4. @ samiroquai
do you ever heard about... wait a moment... ah yes! about Blender?
well, do you know its GUI is OpenGL driven? you know, of course...

  5. @TLOZ: Looks like you're almost there. Have you checked "Run Renderer" and set the correct "Path to LuxRender"?
Also make the lights brighter, 1.0 gives almost no illumination. Try 100.0 or more.
And always stop the rendering with the stop button in the render window, sometimes the background processes remains after closing otherwise.

Wow, you tell great jokes. I was laughing so hard at your comment I was crying! Complimenting DirectX AND Windows 7 on a Blender site in a single post? Genius!

It's even better because LuxRender never switched to DirectX. Your play on the average ignorant stereotype was first class.

  7. Nice guys.
... But wont be able to run in on my laptop as my vaio (vng-nr32z) has a nvidia modified chipset. I can't use the drivers from nvidia website cuz it won't install and Sony has stopped to develop drivers for that special laptop. Can't install Cuda as well. A real nightmare...

  8. I once tried install ubuntu drivers in Windows XP when I had Dell but it screwed up the whole Windows to the point it refused to start anymore and I had to buy new computer. Be careful.

  9. @ temudjin Yeah, like most open-source programs, the only challenge you have to do is find a .deb package or a 32/64 bit program file to run it.

Once you install Ubuntu just head on over here:

I recommend you dual boot Ubuntu, but NOT through Wubi.

@ Samiroquai You're not supposed to install ubuntu DRIVERS you're supposed to install the Ubuntu operating system, no wonder it screwed up your Windows install.
