Another 2.5 beta version is coming up!

Ton Roosendaal writes:

Hi all,

Short meeting again, bugfixing and stabilizing Blender doesn't give long discussions! Here's what we talked about:

  • Mingw 64 bits scons/cmake is not working yet. We're seeking for a volunteer who likes to tackle it.
  • Bug tracker (open issues) is going down steadily, will get below 200 this week most likely.
  • Proposal is to call for compiling another 2.5 beta next sunday. Nathan/Janne/Campbell didn't report showstoppers for it really.
  • Nathan will coordinate a good release log with fixes, and add overview of open issues too.
  • People who like to contribute, but not on bugifxing, check our open todo list.
  • Ton proposes to work on a good 2.5-stable release target list in november, to get a clear picture for when we finally get there. :)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Thank you for your hard work! Imho stability is needed at this moment more than any add ons or new features (though they're always welcome). Thank you VERY much! Can't wait for a new version (and my Sintel copy btw).

  2. Hello and thanks for keeping us inform. I do hope that everything went and is going fine with the production of the DVD.

Its really great to hear that 2.5x is becoming more stable. Thanks for all the hard work.

Stones are going to be thrown at me but, is there now any plan or even a little thought about the future of the BGE?

  3. Great work guys loving these regular-ish beta stability improvement pushes.

Mighty impressed and that link to the todo list is a pure wish list for features to come in my eyes!
Just wish I could code well enough to contribute!

Had a scan through the todo list, I'm assuming that the below means "done" not gone :D

    Compositing:
"The entire compositing functionality is gone."

  4. So does this mean it will soon be ready for documentation?
I really want to get back back to Blender, but not without a comprehensive reference manual with detailed exemples on various techniques involved.

Keep up the good work! ;)

  5. In my opinion, and considering Sintel's release, Global Illumination should be merged into trunk and make it to the next release. It is a very important feature that all major 3d packages have, It' been used and tested in Durian extensively and can be activated and deactivated, so is not like a "forced to use" feature.
    Please, merge GI!

  6. Thanks for posting the minutes.

Also thanks to the developers for all their hard work on this. I can't believe we're getting close to another beta already! :)

  7. I know this probably isn't the right place to bring this up, but anybody else having issues with weird font rendering when switching between a dual monitor setup in the new Blender 2.5x releases? Just wondering if this issue has made it to the bug tracker yet.

  8. Where would a volunteer for 64 bit MinGW sign up? I had looked at cross-compiling 64bit Windows builds from Linux a while back. I can't offer much time on weekdays, but I should be able to take a look at the build systems this weekend. I've used SCons for some of my own projects. Have only messed with CMake for things like BulletPhysics, but it wasn't too bad.

  9. I have been a blender user for years, but the new system for creating and collapsing windows is not intuitive at all. It is very difficult to figure out how to "close" a frame. This could be fixed with (1) a more prominent icon in the UL corner. (2) a tooltip on hover that says "Drag left for new frame or right to replace frame" or something like that. (3) Make it actually work (currently, you can have your cursor in the UL corner icon but it doesn't receive the click, but instead just moves the 3d cursor to that spot. (4) when dragging over a window, rather than the ambiguous "brightening" of the window, why not draw a red line around the whole new area (ie left +right frame). That would show that the operation is combining the windows. Notice I am not against the new system, it just doesn't work. Whoever worked on it just needs to spend about 4 hours to polish it. It is VERY important. I have seen numerous comments of very frustrated people just trying to close new frames they had dragged out.

  10. I'm just cant wait for stable blender with B-mesh. It is hard to make any panels for example in detail aircraft modeling without good knife tool like 3dMax have.

  11. is clear that the stability must be one of the focus but can't wait to see the b-mesh , unlimited clay, wetmaps and see the new srcipts working well like surface sketching. and it would be great that the modifier panel and others panels were like the new sculpt panel and recover some old scripts

  12. Oh, come on, Global illumination is the priority for me. I can make models with only quads and tris, no problem, but render without GI...is like rendering with 3dsmax R1. Sintel is rendered with GI. Every major package has it. It's 2010. If you want to make something with that level of quality, you have to download the render branch, wich seems like it's abandoned on graphicall, at least it has no updates since a long time.

People are always complaining about B-mesh, I've made dozens of models without it, never missed it, but GI, that's where Blender is going to be compared, a render from another package (with GI obviously) and a render with Blender oficial release (no GI). In this comparisson, Blender is going to lose.
