Mushroomer, Blender 2.5 Mushroom Generator Script

This is a Blender 2.5 mushroom generator script developed by Josh Wedlake for the Tube Project. The Mushroomer Script will  distribute original mushroom object over other object's surface and the result can look like this video made by  Josh and Henri Hebeisen.

From the full post of while the cat is away… Josh writes:

So Bassam’s been away in Bulgaria for a couple of weeks and Henri and I mostly had the studio to ourselves. I’ve been working on a mushroom generator for a couple of timelapses – not that tube will be filled with glowing mushrooms, more that we wanted something half way between the ivy generator and a fully fledged particle system. Henri modeled some funky mushrooms and together we spun together a quick demo video just to show off some of the effects that are possible, and to exercise our fetish for indirect lighting and luminous pink.

  1. Wow this looks really cool! I like the way these mushrooms pop up and then shrink! nice demo video, I'l be sure to check the script out sometime!

  2. Wow!
FINALLY the typical blue glowing mushrooms are revisited! :D
And in awseome full rainbow glory too :)
    Looks aweseome :)

Awesome idea but I guess, this could be generalized quite easily to other meshes?

  3. Hey, thanks for all the comments!

@kram2301 : you can use any mesh you like! the only real requirement at the moment is that if you want them to animate, you have to put all of your animation in a sequence of shape keys. We're looking at getting armatures working in the future for tube but thats a bit further off in the future at the moment..

@iCandy 3D : glad you like it! most of the mushrooms in this demo are just fading from one shape to another smoothly. you can animate your mushrooms however you like with the shape keys, and they don't even have to disappear at the end, or be invisible at the start - we just chose to hide them. You could, for example, use the script to place a whole forest of trees, and use the animation to make the leaves fall off the trees one by one in the 'pathing' patterns that the script generates.

An API change which cleared up a lot of confusion for python scripters broke the 'Mushroomer' yesterday morning - I've rushed out a bug fix on the link above which I think is stable!

  4. with the popup and decay of the mushroom you could use that generator to create bubbles for say a soda being poured into a glass, and things like that. gets the gears in my mind a going :)

  5. Josh Wedlake:
Ah I see :) Actually just what I expected. Looked a lot like shape keys to me :)

So it's basically a clever mix of particles, meshes and their shapekeys :) Very beautiful, the examples you gave.
