Big news: Siggraph Asia has selected Sintel for their Animation Festival. This is the first time a Blender Institute movie will be shown at the renowned Animation Festival!

Ton Roosendaal writes:

With a pre-screening copy we are already submitting to festivals, the first approval now is in, for Siggraph! Here’s a snippet of their email:

We are very pleased to inform you that your submission “Sintel” has been accepted to Animation Theater of the SIGGRAPH Asia 2010 Computer Animation Festival.

Our International jury, a diverse group of leading animation experts, selected your piece from among the hundreds of entries for the festival due to its high quality, interest, and impact on the SIGGRAPH Asia Community. Congratulations!

Siggraph Asia will be in Seoul, South Korea, from 14-18 december. I probably will have to go then!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

I watch the big screen Sintel
I could see the face of great Ton

  5. @zdreamonz - Find me a country in the world where you *can't* get Chinese food! ;P

Great job Team Durian! You all deserve to be proud! Have fun in Korea spreading the word. Just think about how many animation heads at a festival like that have never heard of Blender or assume it could never do anything like what you're about to show them... I predict a flood of new Blender users / devs from around that area of Asia clamouring to try 2.5/6. :)

    Bring it on!

Now I sit and impatiently wait for my DVD while avoiding Blender websites to hide from spoilers...

  7. Amazing! As far as I know, Blender has never received any publicity in South Korea. Only a minority of CG artists or enthusiast know of its existence. Congrats, Ton. :)

  9. This is great news. I'm not sure, but I think Blender's Penetration in the Asian market isn't too big. Having them at Siggraph Asia is a great boost, not only for the open movie, but the prospect of those judges who most likely for work a production house. Imagine them seeing the capabilities and then say, what it's free. Also the amount of talented programmers and artist that will contribute to community. Heck just check out that previous article in with that Russian Ad. It's only gonna get better for Blender and the the Institute.
