DragonWars, an iPad game made with Blender and Unity

14

DragonWars from Digital Sorcery was released for Apple iPad (iTouch version coming shortly) The game was created using Unity game engine and all of the animation and some of the modeling were done in Blender by Brian Williamson. He also has made several tutorials for Blender and Unity available on his YouTube account.

I asked him some questions about this project.

How large is your team?

As for my development team. It was just me. I did all the modeling, animation, programming, texturing. I bought maybe two models on Turbosquid but I modeled all the creatures myself. I couldn't have done it without Blender and Unity because those two programs work so well together.

Any disadvantage or problem you want to address when comparing Blender with other tools for your game development?

As for disadvantages in Blender that I would like to see addressed, definitely, I would love to see a more Max or Lightwave like material editor. The way materials are handled in Blender kinda drives me nuts since the tools are all over the place.

It seems you have Blender 2.49b in your tutorials, do you have any plan to move over Blender 2.5? Anything is missing from it that block the exporting?

As for using Blender 2.5, I am using that for a current project. I just did not want to change tools mid stream for fear that something was going to break what I had already created. Unless there is a compelling new feature I can't live without I stay with one set of tools for the whole project to keep the workflow consistent.

P.S.: I am currently using Blender for a project at my "day job" as Multimedia Designer for a university. I am using it to animate characters for a series of role play videos to be used in training for the Nursing department. The project is slated for release at the end of October and I will be posting more about it when it is done. It would be a good chance to show how Blender can be used for educational purposes.

Thank you very much Brian! Looking forward to it!

  1. Great to see Blender being used like this!

Did you mean 'iPod Touch' in the first sentence? I don't think there's such a sung as an iTouch. :P

  2. Nice work there, when you get to Blender 2.53, you could make those puffs more like smoke or fire, unless they are intended to look like as is...

The graphics are excellent, though I'm not really interested in that style of game, plus I don't have an iPad!

Will be great to see the future progress on this project.

(Unrelated: Your finger moving around gave me great FPS accuracy training.......!!!)

  3. Hi,

I didn't play your game, but hear no background-music in your video. Games without background-music tend to become boring faster. You should checkout Jamendo.com or opengameart.org to get some free / CreativeCommons music into your game!

For Example: http://www.jamendo.com/fr/album/49454 would match to your epic setting.

  4. Looks amazing! Great job, especially having a one person development team!

But wait, didn't Apple come out with this stupid rule that nothing could be cross compiled? Or is that only for iphone?

What was the big deal with Flash CS5 a while ago and does that affect unity at all?

  5. Michael T Pitre on

Really Impressed with that game of yours man!

It is sort of an inspiration for me to go ahead and make my own game on a more simplier level. At the moment all that is bogging me down is the programming but I'll do few tutorials to get the basics.

Back on Topic Though, The hard work shows in this!

  6. Congrats! Very nice game. I'm quite impressed. I do not have an IPad or even an Iphone, but if I get the chance I'll play your game.

All the best, and good luck for the sale of your game :).
