2 Great Game Engine Demos

Cathedral Corridor

A video of my cathedral corridor environment in the Blender Game Engine. The frame rate is slow, but that happens when I capture.

King Grocery Market

eedobaba7726 writes:

A scene I've been working on for the past several weeks in the blender game engine.

The scene uses lots of high res baked textures, and uses a system of timed lights for lightning flashes. The exterior walls of the building are textured using the same blend shading technique from a recent video I did.

The animation was premade, but the capture is realtime. I had to record at 1/4 speed and speed it up to compensate for the slowdown when recording though, so I hope you think it turned out well! The audio was added in post.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. These 2 Demo are totally awesome...
The blender Game engine is very powerfull, it is a real shame
that Window have no good support for OpenGl.

I would have loved to be able to do Game using the Blender Game Engine.
but it crashes all the time.

Do these Demos run on Windows?
If yes what graphic card are you using.

I am Greedy I want some more...
    Do some more.

    Keep it up!

  2. Stunning work!!! I'm just starting out with Blender and you've inspired me to investigate the Game Engine - once I have modelling figured out! It would be a great way to investigate an architectural design.

pixnlove: out of interest, do you use an ATI graphics card? In my (admittedly limited) experience OpenGL does tend to crash a lot with ATI cards under windows. Now I stick with nVidia and have no problems.

  3. Wow love the volumetric lights I am working on an underwater scene that needs that. Any chance of sharing how you did that?

  4. I hope the regular oGL render will support FSAA(FullScene) soon...or when I need it and doing so myself. Extend the offscreen-buffer to support FSAA didn't seem too complicated.

  5. Great lighting and textures, very realistic.
I can't imagine the time it took to get all the brand-labels organized.
Then factor in the real time aspect and that when the drool starts a little.

A tiny critique would be for the back wall of the grocery store, is that laid brick or a flat wall tone? I dunno, when you go around the corner and the "private" entrance door comes into view....somethings missing...like hvac maybe, or perhaps just the lighting in the corner is too dark for the rest of it.

...also, I would not buy unrefrigerated orange juice. : )

don't mind the nit-picks though, Eedobaba, you've got a solid setup!

  6. @pixnlove
You use the correct version of blender (32 or 64-bit?)

    Wow, very impressive demos!
The step-noise in the 2nd video was a bit annoying but everything else was great ;)
(I liked the reflection thingy in the shop - however it's called)

  7. Love the volume lighting in the first one and the rain in the second. I have an idea how you did both, but I'd love to hear it from you! Congrats!

  8. The Lays chips looks unrealistic because it needs to look a bit crumply. The first Clearance sign is a bit unusual, not like real life clearance signs, and the second Clearance sign is better, but you do not see how it is attached to the shelf, and the arrows pointing down are unusual, since it is just right next to the product. You can still hear footsteps while you are standing still.

Otherwise, very nice. I like how you added a lot of details, like the instructions on the Fire Extinguisher.

I recognized Edy's Ice Cream in the refrigerator/freezer thing.

  9. Completely pointless. There is no reason to use a realtime engine for this. BGE is never going to compete with the real solutions that exist out there, and has been nothing but a time sink for developers who could be working on something useful that doesn't just bloat Blender.

  10. Blending BriGuy on

Quote "BGE is never going to compete with the real solutions that exist out there" /quote

Well, not with THAT attitude it won't!

  11. So, i went to the youtube of the creator of these demos to subscribe, and as it turns out, I ALREADY DID for the portal 2 fan-made trailer made in blender on there.

    I lol'd.
