New Feature in Development: Vpaint Image Source + Overlay

75

Warning: you may start drooling after seeing this video!

Niholas writes:

Another short video of a new vpaint feature: image source + overlay. Basically you can load up an image, position it in the viewport, and then the brush can sample colors from it. Makes it pretty quick to apply nice texturing to the model.

This code isn't in SVN yet, need to clean it.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. ah this is very good
please make to paint multiple vcol layers with different brushes - with this we can paint color+specular+bump for example

  2. Wow... I saw a video recently of another program that does something similar and I did think it would be great if Blender did this... This looks genuinely outstanding!

  3. That is good news, a feature which for me is revolutionizing the way
to texture, paint textures directly on the model's dream and gain
    time!
    -
Voila une bonne nouvelle, une fonctionnalités qui pour moi révolutionne la façon
de texturer, peindre des textures directement sur le modèle le rêve et le gain de
    temps!

  4. omg \o/ incredible amazing beautiful awesome outstanding feature ! I am dreaming !

will it be with multiple layers ?

    Thanks a lot Nicholas !

  5. Drool Drool Drool Drool Drool Drool Drool !!!!

This is simply amazing! I don't understand why I started out 3d Modelling with Maya to begin with! :(

  6. Arvin Moses, yes, you need many vertices for this, but Blender can handle many vertices in sculpt mode and of course (I hope) in this vpaint mode.

  7. I'm officially now a drooling monkey's donkey :)
Excellent feature, this will make all the difference, especially with a "texture-icon-dropdown" feature as we already have, in combination with this - will ROCK everyones world!

    NICE WORK!!!!!

  8. Ohhhhh yaaaaaaa..... this is a great feature! can you dictate what texture it is applied to? I would love to be able to use this for multiple texture types (ie. Diffuse, Bump, Specular, etc.)

  9. This has the potentially very useful to me.

Please include this of the next update of Blender if you can. I would really appreciate it.

  10. it's getting better and better each single day!...thanks Niholas for your great contribution to our community!!...-)

  11. Very cool and promising implementation ... but
its only usable in vertex paint. So in fact only one layer to paint at. To get a map out of this you would have to texture bake it to a texture. And painting different channels (specular, bump etc) is tedious again.
So any comparisons to 3D-coat et.al. is unfortunately not quite adequate.
I would really love to see this applied to texture painting. This with layers, channels and an overhauled brush engine would take blenders texture painting to a completely new level.
But its already exiting to see fresh ideas coming to blender.

  12. @loramel: I can kind of agree with you about your points, I'd have to say though what's to say that over time this gets developed to achieve these rather amazing heights we hope for!

  13. loramel: I agree. But this could be a big update to projection painting. I like this feature, and I think it has potential to be great! Thanks for the update Bart!

  14. Amazing o_0
    .... but it's vertex painting.

I find the texturing part powerful in Blender as it is,
but with this new feature, if it was texture paint, WOW ... productivity as its best :)

The easy, on-the-fly rotation / scaling / color adjustment of the texture is fantastic!

It could be useful to compare / merge with Campbell's new re-projection feature, which is texture painting

  15. Just spilt coffee all down my shirt while watching video and drinking at the same time.

Warning, don't watch video while drinking coffee!!!

  16. IT SEEMS THAT IT IS ONLY VERTEX COLOR,

I hope that the front end system could be ported to texture paint mode!

    Thanks Nicolas!

  17. wow! tremendous!

i've been taking a look at some of the other videos for sculpting and it's amazing how robust the sculpting and painting tools in blender have become....

i'd be interested to see if in terms of pure poly count, if blender's toppled or competitive with mudbox yet....

anyway, awesome development that seems to continue without pause and all in a package that is completely FREE.

    awesome stuff.

    rock on.

  18. oh my god!!

this is a killer feature! just a little bit fear about the CTRL+Z fnction, sometimes give me problems.

    thankyou!

  19. it's only vertex color :/
That is to say we have to subdivide the mesh massively to have a pleasant resolution.

Ui is seams great, I hope it can be used for texture paint.

  20. @steren - if you can subdivide enough, vertex colors is great and can be better than texels. that's why vertex colors is at all viable these days and not just a remnant from nintendo 64 and playstation 1 days - in zbrush, you can easily subidivide to very large vertex counts (tens of millions on even modest computers) so that it gives you more detail per given area than a reasonable image map size you would have tried using. if you can subdivide to high enough of a level and still be able to work productively, it is not in any way inferior to painting pixels and in fact can be better in that you don't at all have to worry about uv maps until later if at all.

  21. Very nice! Love the adjusting on the fly of the decal. This would actually give Blender some massive flexibility by having two seperate painting modes. The normal texture painting onto bitmaps and this new vpaint/polypaint mode would both have their respective strengths. Would be great to be convert the vpaint to a texture at a click.

The real question is how many tools/brushes will be common to both toolsets. Particularly pertinent considering the current ongoing texture painting GSOC project. Also, at some stage some fine dev is bound to get interested in implementing Ptex in Blender, and we will be in texturing heaven =)

  22. ih
very good , i have been working for 3 years.
thank so much for your work and i believe your work on blender.
    it is second to non.

    thank your again.

  23. Mr Nicholas, the guys said it before but an you are a genius! Thats gonna change my life. Normal mapping, diffuse mapping. Man Blender 2.6 is gonna change the 3D world!

  24. Incredible! I just NEED this option so bad :)
Thank you for developing it, and I hope that it will be included in blender soon!
