Blender Developer Meeting Minutes - July 18th, 2010

26

Will Blender 2.5 Beta be released this week?

Current Projects

  • Martin's netrender is getting good testing from the 48h project, some issues identified are a need to rework library relinking and work out how to get dependencies for image sequences.
  • Sergey has prepared a patch to apply current changes from nurbs25 to latest trunk. when eman finishes his current work under they will need to rebranch.

Google Summer of Code

  • Jason put together a proof of concept for a simple matcap (Lit Sphere) shader selector and would like brechts feedback.
  • Mike made good progress on mouse and pen, getting typically 20x the amount of input compared to stock blender, so no more jagged lines. All of the major supported platforms should be working soon.

Blender 2.5x

There are a few bugs that are on Brechts high priority list, that he is looking at when he has time. For 2.5, we can use help with the release notes, see the 2.5 release notes page for things we need help with documentation on. Campbell suggested someone go over the commit log for every commit since alpha 2 and pick out the commits worth listing. Ton said that today everyone in Amsterdam is a bit busy with the preview viewing, but tomorrow we can do the release AHOY, so the first beta some time this week.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I've really waited for this. The first beta version. As from now I'll be leaving little by little 2.49 behind. It would be really great to have a proper documentation with it, that would be of great help, but I know thats gonna take some time. Just do your best guys and thanks for everything you have done.

  2. Ben Anderson on

YES!!! At last a beta and boy has been a big gap since the first release of Blender 2.5 Alpha 0 till Blender 2.5 Beta but it's come a very far way! Can't wait to go to the blender site and see Blender 2.5 Beta there :).

  3. Cheering you guys on! That Mat Cap procedure sounds really cool! I use the one in ZBrush all the time and having it in Blender would be awesome!

  4. "Mike made good progress on mouse and pen"...
Is there any chance to see the mouse gestures for moving/rotating/scaling?
I'm using Blender about 7 years, 8 hours at day and can't believe that this really great and mega-usability feature was broken.
When I write about it in forum I'm getting the answer like: "We don't need it".
Who write it? Those, who model boxes and spheres one hour per week.
I know - blender is free and anybody can't demand anything, but is this feature need really so much of coding?
I thank to all Blender coders for their hard work, and believe, that mouse gestures will come back to 2.5
    P.S. Sorry for my EN.

  5. I would like to add my voice to the request for mouse gestures in 2.5. I have being using blender for many years and still instinctively wiggle my wacom to grab and rotate but nothing happens! If it took thirty minutes of a coder's time I would gladly pay him (or her) to code. Does anyone here know sufficient python to do this?

  6. Oh boy oh boy!
I can't wait to start playing with the new Blender!

Ton, Brech, Campbell & everyone else contributing to this release, thank you for all of the hard work you have been putting into the development on this!

  8. Listen to the users :-) they are having problems.

Yay! Beta! Hope it is more usable. I had a project trashed because of problems I encounter(bugs?) and moved back to 2.4. Hope this one proves to be superior.

  9. I think at some point before blender 2.5 is released we should get some kind of user-feedback process on the new interface. A lot about the interface is really good, but there are several holes - for example, those things at the corners of the panels that allow panels to be split and combined should be on every corner, and i miss the power to auto-name textures and materials. And mouse-gestures were already mentioned.

If you are attempting to make the interface more user-friendly and intuitive you to ask all the users, and this includes new users, if things are where you expect them to be.

  10. Only if they fix the UI issues, the central reason why many people simply abandons blender after a day or so.
The previous 2.5 Alphas made small progress in this area, with awful lot of work to still be done.

  11. Have they merged the render25 branch into the main trunk yet? Last I checked the Sintel team were all still using the Render branch for everything.
