I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Yes, very impressive setup !!! just one question: what's about the user web interface? can we get the same somewhere ?
i'm still looking for infos about the software ! i use ubuntu server also but what is the method, please ?
    anyway, great job here !
    uriel

  2. The web UI is much nicer than the CLI we use (Sun Gridengine). Very nice. It must be fun to work at the Blender Institute!

What were you hiding there? :)

  3. Glad to see your using good Ole Ubuntu!:)
Been using it for 4-5 years now and it hasn't ever been short of awesome when it comes to functionality, speed and even aesthetics :)
Well done guys this is coming along great!:)

  4. Cool setup you have there.
What's with the black bars, something we're not allowed to see?

    Ps.
Noticed a funny little detail @2:48 4th item on the job list: "all your base" :D wonder what is it??

  5. i built one computer (the one that i have)...from my experience, MAN it would have taken a long time to set up that renderfarm

  6. Many thanks. Great to see your 'use what you've got' approach.
I've got ttwo rendering sub-stations set up using Ubuntu 9.04 | Blender 2.49b | Yafaray.
And a very primitive Puppy LInux | Blender 2.49b tester; three Pentium IIIs, and it actually works.
Question: Is there some problem with apps like Dr. Queue that made you decide not to use it?
I think a report on Ubuntu rendering solutions (pros and cons) from your team would be invaluable.

  7. As I saw the last minutes of this video, and I can't stand to say your system manage method looks pathetic. Why not dr. queue? There is a lot of elegant clustering solution in the open-source world.

  8. so why 1,000 in electricity to run the farm? I have 1 pc - 4 core processor, I doubt 16 more would rack my bill to 1k
