  1. Blender has opened a world of opportunities for story tellers around the world.

People talk about Maya being a standard in the industry. However, what is status/money/power worth without social responsibility? Blender has reached the masses, and more and more we see projects from all over the world. Creating jobs and opportunities for the rest of us and not only the elites.

    Good job Blender team.

  2. @melody
    i agree
    maya=expensive maya=very good

    blender=free blender= Awesome

and its now being more and more accepted in commericals and this now.
    in 20 years...

PIXAR USES FREE OPEN SOURCE PROGRAM
Blender is the creator of Toy Story 7 and Cars 4 which come out in 2020

    Happy Blending all

  3. I just read a thread in Cgtalk: blender forums - A CGSStaff name "leigh" She post this,

"Haha. Studios totally alter Maya and other applications to suit their pipelines. In fact, Maya's huge extensive capability through scripting and programming is one of the main reasons why it's the main choice of the film industry, where studios rely heavily on proprietary tools.
The question being asked here should be: is there room for Blender in the industry? As of now, I'd say no."

I'm a blender fan boy. I'm not a Cgtalk member. But Why she say like that? If she is a CGSStaff.
    Maybe she never used blender?

I believe in blender and I use blender.
2.5-2.6 will bite Maya cake I know.

Be DEAF when people tell YOU that YOU can not fulfil YOUR dreams! (Frog story)

    Go blender Go...

  4. I'm impressed. Though the models could do with some work, I know this is the beginning of a great project. Up Blender. I've used Maya and I prefer Blender. It's easier to get along with.

  6. The reason that Maya still dominates the industry is mostly tradition. Animators and programmers in the big studios know it inside and out, so workflows are very easy to implement. At that stage it really doesn't make sense for them to migrate when they have so much capital already invested.

On the other hand, if the question is about independent freelancers, advertising agencies/graphic design studios/ moving into the 3d market for the first time or even smaller budget independent films then I think that blender has a decisive advantage. At that level, the licensing cost of the program becomes a much bigger deal.

I think for most of us (including the industry professionals) the limiting factor is the artist, not having x program over y program with feature z. In the right hands Blender and Maya produce perfectly comparable results; what the industry uses is more about culture and infrastructure than it is about deciding which program is objectively better.

  7. I like the forest, cool for venezuela artist, like Melody say, blender is a good open choise for tell stories... some people remember the announcement about there no more proyect after Durian, because the dev team need to make 2.5 stable for the 2.6 release, all the support always for that, this is the true example of now we can take the challenge of make our stories... Congratulation to "Macuare Producciones".

Los recursos que muchas personas han contribuído al mundo para facilitar la curva de aprendizaje de los princiantes, han sido vitales para nostoros.

About Historias Nativas: The team that worked on the project, were pretty much beginners that really wanted to work hard and learn a lot, we selected this team with workshops that included classes by Pablo Vazquez (Venomgfx), Claudio Andaur (malefico), and Daniel Salazar (ZanQdO). So after the workshops we selected the team and start working right away and this (and some other chapters) is the result of that work. We do appreciate all critiques so we can learn and improve in the future.

  9. Love it! Rich, colourful and simple at the same time. The textures are particularly nice as is the model of the man. If I have any suggestions it would be to look at the animation of the bird. Wings don't just go up and down. It's like swimming. They lift up, then move forward then down and back. The body also normally moves up and down more. A touch of music would be nice, too.

    Great job!

    Muchas gracias por todo!

  10. Regarding the leigh comment.

Maya vs Blender is just like Windows vs Linux.

the company behind it is one,
    the software (read: plug-in) availability
what was being teached at school (so no re-train)
knowledge user supply (which one is easier to get? user of max/maya or blender?).

A lot of people think about Windows / Linux is all about the OS itself, but actually, it's the everything else - like the driver to your digital camera / webcam, like that popular MMORPG you want to play, like the office suit that you use at work (do you really want to "extensively" learn two different application?), the list is on and on. like many other thing. I mean, ever since 3D Studio R1 (DOS) to 3DS MAX (Windows) for a long time, if you want to use that app - it has to be Windows - and so many other app. But of course, this too has it vicious circle. The moment the developer realize that 90% of it's user is running Windows, they was like "no plan for other OS at the moment.

Anyway, not to start a flame war, but previous UI of blender does scare a lot of people - including me. Lack of high quality book is another (just read people comment on artist writing flash coding tutorial on the internet - in other word, too much 'meh' tutorial on the internet that could teach you do thing the hard / wrong way).

See? Lack of high quality published book on blender is enough to limit it's new user - and this in itself might not be the fault of Blender itself (previously, that is).

To conlude this long post, Maya/Max vs Blender is more than just price or tools available, it's many other thing.

Of course there are going to be a time when new technology replaces the old (messiah:Studio start just as a plug-in), in MAX 2011 now they are 'replacing' material editor, and CAT (start as plug-in for Softimage) now replaces character studio / biped.

There could be a time Blender actually replaces, or a part of, serious pipeline at serious animation studios.

Until then, life is as life is.

  11. Just another 2 cent - notice that Unity is now free (basic), so is Unreal Developer Kit? Crysis engine is free to school / university? max / maya 2011 education verision is now free and last 1 1/2 year (yep, 1 and a half year, I know since i'm a clerk studying for a multimedia degree at night).

Just to show that high quality is now not enough, you also have to be free so people is using it, large userbase become bigger, and people (once graduate) decided not to learn new app (the company they work for is buying it anyway).

    It's a vicious circle, but that's business.

  12. @Kiijja:

Yes CGTALK and that woman "LEIGH" are the must dummy characters in the Industry. They do anything to make money. She is not interested at all to see anyone creating good stuff in Blender. I had a big discussion with her because I disagreed with some comments. She hates Blender. She wants to keep members blind with goofy advertisements from MAYA, and other type of software. Money is all about but she knows as everyone, that Blender is growing and growing. After that problem many CGTALK members have emailed me saying that she rips people off by telling them that she and CGSOCIATY have control of their future. You must be on her side otherwise you won't be able to get a job on this planet. Sure, MY ASS !

  13. Wow, Animaticoide, I'm sorry to hear that, and I don't know what conversation you have with leigh.

But if you graduate with study experience in Maya, and lot's of study loan (and bills) to pay, and the job advertisement says "knowledge of Maya", then everything is self explanatory.

I'm still waiting for a day when advertisement for animators and modelers in major mag / website says "blenders user needed", but I'm sure it's going to be for a while.

I do love max, and I too going to love blender (once 2.6 comes out). But with work and study, and other thing in life, there is the time limit, and you can only spread yourself so thin. So you look at industry job opening, and you realize that 85% ask for max/maya, everything else is self explanatory - you just know where to put your time is.

I know it's a chicken and egg thing - but changing the UI is the first step, having a lot of book available on it is another. Don't let Blender become just like, *cough*, Crystal Space, *cough*. I know it's great now, but just compare Crystal Space to OGRE, then you'll realize sometimes to focus on making it usefull and easy right from the start is better than trying to add everything down to kitchen sink - with everything is unstable, hard to use, and very long time in developent and beta (which lead to nobody want to use it in real production).

    just go to:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Space
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OGRE

and you'll notice that despite being new, OGRE was used more in real production that CS (AFAIK).

I think once Blender 2.6 is out, and more books were upgraded to support that version (new edition), that is when blender really kick off.

  14. @Animaticoide

    She >> Fear Of Change?

Maybe she should to take Business Management Class now.
And analysis about Blender Model of Open-source World for homework.

    Thank..
