TOSMI writes:

TOSMI, the European Union's support program for the European audiovisual industry, is organizing two separate six-day courses this summer in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Both courses will focus on Blender. The first one, held from 16-21 August, serves as a general introduction to Blender and the software will be used to teach an entire production process. The second one, held from 23-28 August, puts emphasis on advanced Blender techniques. Participants will learn about advanced animation techniques and will make a professional portfolio or demo reel in Blender 2.5. Both courses last 6 days and they include 8 hours of mixed theory and practice. You can check more detailed program on our website.

Eligible participants include people from the European Union and Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Croatia and Lichtenstein. There are 14 positions available for each course. Each course costs 1000 euro. The price includes accommodation, lunch and coffee breaks while participants are responsible for arranging and covering travel costs.

Good news is that a number of scholarships are available for you to apply for so everybody has a good chance of becoming a part of the program. Application deadline is July 15th.

Trainers, amongst others, include Bassam Kurdali and Andy Goralczyk, both of whom are regarded as some of the best Blender artists.

  1. I really wanted to participate and meet Bassam and Andy, but for the locals 1000 euro price tag is way too much (about 5 full monthly salaries/ 1 full year of private education in university). Especially when one doesn't need the accommodation or food. I totally understand that the point is to provide the highest quality education available, but still wanted to express my personal disappointment. I will try to apply for the scholarships, but I doubt I would get one since I don't have neither big shiny CV, nor finished projects to prove excellence.

Anyhow. I am really happy that something like this is organized in Bulgaria. There are a lot of people interested in CG art here, but blender is rather unknown and underestimated. Let's hope that events like this will change people's mind and opinion. Good luck and enjoy sunny Bulgaria =)

  2. @bned :: I am one of the trainers and organizers and I would suggest that you file an application indicating that you need a scholarship. We do know that 1000 Euros is a little steep for someone livng in the Balkans, but we do give out many scholarships. So give it a try!

    bned,
I am one of the trainers on TOSMI. These courses are intended for people who want to learn Blender (1st week) or learn about character animation (2nd week). Previous work is required but not a definite decider and having a great porfolio done in Blender means you don't need basics. So you should gather what you've got (3D or 2D, still, video...) and apply!
When you get a scholarship, all but traveling costs are covered!
