Durian: Render Previews

12

The Durian team have released a number of final and almost-final renders.

Ton writes:

Just digged this up today from the render farm, a mix of test renders, semi-finals and final-finals. All graphics is potentially being updated still, and certainly will be color graded yet. Thanks to our powerful JUSTACLUSTER™ there’s a lot of re-rendering going on, its a great to be able to tweak so much on the render/lighting stage! Just too bad we are using raytracing so much… render times for final quality go to an hour per 2k frame in several cases. Brecht will look into speedups though!

Anyway, enjoy the graphics, and for those who love to write crits, remember: it ain’t done until the fat lady sings!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Grandmaster B on

Some renders are pretty impressive, i believe i have seldom seen so much detail in an animated movie. You guys rock!

  2. Looks great you guys, keep up the good work, Sintel is gonna make a nice addition to the 'open movies' family.

  3. These are amazing renders!!!
Congrat's on the what you are achieving.
It's inspiring to everyone and your brilliant 'work' will help us all in so many ways.

    2 requests Ton:

    1. PLEASE render a 3D version!
You have created such an immersive world - it would fill a 3D view perfectly, add to viewer enjoyment, and no doubt be used by many 3D screen manufacturers as their demo video (like BBB was for 2D) giving Sintel and Blender extra publicity.

And... if everyone isn't tired of this the story of Sintel after 6 months (highly doubtful), and 2.5 is stable...

    2. PLEASE make the next Blender Foundation Game Project: 'Sintel : the Game' !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    i) It would save a lot of dev time as you won't have to build most games assets, so you could focus more on bringing the game engine up to a level to make the game match (as closely as possible) the quality of the rendered video Sintel.

ii) The BF could re-release Sintel with the game.

iii) The story, animation, and rendering quality of Sintel looks great enough to give it a 'long life' - so capitalise on this by letting Sintel the video create the market for a semi-high-end Sintel game, using the next Blender Game Engine.

Of course, it's not always best to make a game based on a linear story, but 'Sintel : the Game' wouldn't have to follow the story from Sintel the video exactly. It could be based around just one to three times/environments we see in the video or whatever - but just part of the Sintel story. Best to stick to assets in the story to save time rather than do a pre/se-quel game to Sintel video story. There must be enough scope inside Sintel's existing story to make a game world.

A game with dragons in it ... hmm ... that will be popular!!!!! =)

    Please think about this Ton!

I'm keen to know what others in the community think about this idea too.

  4. :0) The fat lady done sang, Ton!!! :0)
