I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Community Lead at n8n.

AWESOME ^_^
What a face! If I had to buy meat from this man…
*shudders*
…I just might become a vegetarian.
@Gryphon Lol!
Amazing and frightening. The expression and teeth are so realistic. I like the crack in the tile in the backgound. I hope there will be a tutorial from this in the future.
Clothes is too clean, but the hair (both normal and facial) is fantastic. As is the skin..
all in all it looks great, but there is something fishy about it..
I think maybe it’s due to the defocus: the meat and part of the left side of the face look somehow stereoscopic seen without 3D glasses.. or is it the lighting color? can’t put my fingers on it, it just doesn’t feel 100% right.
but anyway: looks very professional all together!
hmm, actually the right side of the render looks 100% realistic, the left side doesn’t (in contrast to the right side). I guess it really must be the lighting…
amazing. Looks so real. I was impressed the first time I saw it at blenderartists.org and still like it. The best one for me is the other version, the first at his thread in that forum.
is this 2.4x or 2.5??
As I ever said, meat ist good for perfect teeth.
Nice work, pretty good shaders. But somehow, this friendly guy looks like a pirate… However, I’m getting hungry.
Hi all!
this is a surprise to me find my image of the contest here. Thanks to all.
The model was made with blender 2.49b but the render was in 2.5.
The background has a little defocus (on blender composition) and you don´t have to use 3d glasses ;D. I did that to differentiate the image of the butcher with the background and make it look like a professional camera.
there are two lights on the both sides with different colors.
i hope to make a tutorial and animation of the face, because it has control of the gestures and lips.
scary and amazing at the same time.
gold chain on his right shoulder and neck side is wrong, it dont feel that it lies on body (it should be) but well from what blender without full GI suport and other 2.6 features can make, that is cool :) congratulations!
@Gryphon roflol!!!!
The meat look like pearl-shell, so is the face(leftside) this make it look flat and (bump)details faint… The chains(not just the shapes) are too alike too be real…
And a prof photographer would get rid of(recomposition or photoshop) the hook on the rightside… Things that help with the ‘realness’-factor is birthmarks and overall ‘dis-symmetry'(even in the composition).
But all-in-all still enough to say; Good job!
jaol the only thing i would change is the teeth look too perfect for a butcher with a kinda angry facade and unclean appearance.
the fact he is unchaven suggests lazy/dirty but the teeth imply perfection. :P
other than that i love :)
ps. also the hook id move to the same lvel as the top of his head perhaps :)
Nice skin & hair.
But tooth, meet and metal aren’t real.
I think the mouth needs a tongue and even a little light in there, it’s too dark for the amount of light you have. I agree about the meat looking thin, but other than those minor details it’s awesome!
Good job!
@_@…. so realistic…. need more blood oh his dress and face!!!
Fantastic! I’m always in awe of good organic modelers.
I’m not too fond of the red light (it matches his skin tone too much), but overall he looks menacing. Well done!
Nice photo – when you gonna start blending it? ;D
Too perfect – wrinkle up the shirt a bit, and add faded bloodstains and other noise. That is, if you want that last 0.3 out of 10.
Wow! Well done! It always amazes me what other ppl come up with!
Very good modeling, texturing and rendering.
The light setup looks too friendly, though.
Also the composition isn’t too good, IMO. Too much free space above the head – too central
Awesome… I would dirty up his clothes, and make his teeth look a bit more rotten(yellow with brown bits.)
I like more of this guy. May be make his teeth is more yellow or broken.
You may also improve the color tone of the teeth. They should be more yellow than white or grey!
I would rename the title to “Meat The Butcher”.
