Video: How to use Blender

69

From the WTF?! department - 'How to use Blender' by Zagupi and D Fast. An animation done entirely in Blender's 3D view. The good stuff starts after 1:30, so don't close it too soon!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. IMHO this could have been way better.
Not enough 'blender dancing' and to much of 'working on a model in real time'...

  2. Dear steve, sadly if you closed the window after 60seconds you missed everything that was awesome in this video, including a superbly awesome monkey slap. :(

  3. Yes, the first 1:30 aren't very interesting - I added a note to that extent. As an old Amiga demo-scene member, I love this stuff. And a bit of techno on the early Sunday morning doesn't hurt, either ;-)

  4. I've watched it completely, and think it's really good.
What I would love is some tutorials showcasing how to use some of the techniques in the video.

The sequence of the plane over the "buildings" is really cool!

    Good work!

  5. Wow, yeah, thats really well worth the wait.
    Excellent techniques.
(i wish i could do that last part)
(srsly, how do they do it?)

  6. When will I be able to do that ?

About animated tutorials in general :
Is there really no way to have readable buttons ?
It hurts my eyes to have to guess their caption.

  7. Who can't wait , can't get the best. Always
Thanks for the video it's really creative , a funny way for a demo-reel about blender!

  8. @bart,
I forgot that as I don't had that visible the way I view the movies. With wireless UMTS and a 3 GB volume limit I'll have to content myself with 480p.

Dry, tongue in cheek, humourously frenetic and paranoiac take on Blender, it's interface, it's possibilities and it's users. Whether all this is intended or serendipitous is not relevant, I like it. Can't comment on the skill levels just the performance.

  10. Thanks guys =)
The video is a demoscene production, so those who had their Amiga-sense tingling, were on the right track! it was released first at Breakpoint 2010, one of the largest demoscene-events. It placed third in the animation competition.

    If you're interested, there's a fullsize H.264-video here: http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=54620

    xyz14, the answer: dupliframes :)

  11. i really like this video/ demo and that DnB music very much aswell..
cool looks with the preview window and all the crazy effects they get out of the mesh tools in action,
i see it more of a display of blenders great modelling and interface than as a render or animation reel, obviously..so i don't compare this to a gallery vid or something
i enjoyed the freaky looks and musics *thumbsup*
    cool work!!!

  12. it wasn't that bad as i thought in the beginning but it was worth watching full anyways thanks for sharing and enjoy blendering.

:-D Started out slow, but in the end I liked it. Way to think outside the box. And a great demonstration of Blender 2.5's new power and usability. I can customize and see animation while modeling without rendering. Just great, thanks!

  14. Yeaaaa!!! all the monster power of Blender jajajaja

    Greetings

PD: The effect of the text was very interesting... How can I do that?

Great Stuff, I was also a great fan of the amiga scene, and the late night crappy rave videos. Good old amiga
BTW when is the amiga version of blender going to be released?

  16. Wow - after this shitty video, I'm still trying to figure out where to start with this program. If Blender wants people to start using their software, a great start would be to delete this video.. yuchh!!

  17. while i agree, this probably shouldn't be titled "how to use blender", it does have a nice "danceclub projector screen" feel too it :D i felt like i should be twirling some glow-sticks :D

  18. jes whats wrong with you.

yes it is kinda low end - but I agree with bart here.
the movie made me laugh few times. maybe because
of eyecandy stuff you need to read between the lines.

using the interface to just draw patterns was just genius.

funny how 3d noobs hate this work and pros amuse it ...

  19. Oh yes ... conceptually, I am totally in love with this piece. Can Blender create art that isn't just output to image/movie/game? Art can be made with just the interface. I want to see more of this - taken further and crazier.

For those who don't get it, your really missing out on something amazing.

  20. zapman: Actually, "Death Grind" was released at a different animation competition in 2009. At Breakpoint it received the scene.org ("demoscene oscar") award for the best animation, that's why you saw it on the live stream. Anyways, it's a cool animation, everyone should see it. Some superb rendering there.

HINT - Advanced users can START it at 1:30.

Granted the makers could have edited it that way, but we were given fair warning and even a recommended start time.

    0:00 to 1:40, one star
1:40 to end, four stars (subscores 3 for quality, 5 for chuckle factor)

If a minute and a half of bad free video on the internet is the worst thing that happens to you today, congratulations! Your prize? Watch the rest of it.

It does get fun, and skips the mundane parts like adding and positioning objects - basically gets rid of the stuff where it shows you - how to use Blender...

The slap session should've had the hat!

  22. haha this is awsome ^.^ some people are just wankers and have to insult the video ... ach but i bet they cant do anything better,

    good job :]

  23. Talented people can make worthwhile video out of *anything* ... I loved the windowfest that started at 3:18. Well done!

  24. Guys, so much bitching! It was fun and not intended to be "professional" - in an artistic sense it actually was quite professional. I watched it twice and I'll watch it some more!

  25. Is there some sort of tutorial that could teach me the basic shortcuts to do some of this stuff? Especially when you moved the hats along their "normals"? This would be useful for extending stuff off a suface, which I can't do properly yet.

  26. Yay, nice vid :D

jamikKim: If I get right, what you meant, he just did a lot of instances, went into edit mode and moved one of the copies on the z-axis.
All the other instances moved on their relative Z-axis as well, so that all of them looked like moving in their up-direction.

  27. I am SO glad I stayed beyond 1:30! This was really enjoyable.
And that jet flying over the city was EPIC! Thank you for sharing this.

  28. some fascinating stuff in there... the jet was awesome!

and i think i saw some non-BGE Rigid-Body sims in there... :D gotta find one of those builds

    @kram2301 - is that you, kram? :)

  29. that was hilarious! i've been using blender for a some years now, so i know a lot of the stuff on there but, to whomever is watching...play it all the way through. by the way...dude! how you just gonna slap the monkey until her eyes come out? WTF? LMAO!
