Developer's meeting notes: new particle fluids core added, updates and continued progress on Blender 2.5, a list of simple to-do items for new developers, and the GSOC deadline is in four days!

Ton Roosendaal writes:

Hi all,

Current projects

  • Janne Karhu mentions particle fluid physics core is now in trunk. Raul will work on docs and new features in the future.
  • Ton checks with Janne and Daniel Genrich availability for help on Durian. Just a matter of mailing them!

Blender 2.5 project

  • Todo items for the next releases:
  • Martin Poirier prefers better ways to merge saved keymaps with default (not saved) keymaps. He has ideas for it, and will discuss with Brecht and Campbell later.
  • Tom Musgrove mentions sculpting UI; he finds the configuration confusing. He'll show an improved proposal to us or Matt to illustrate the point.
  • Toolbar menus are still a bit unfinished, we need to sort out how much will be added to the 2.5 beta todo.
  • More 2.5 todos: anim player window... how? Is it a beta target?
  • Andrea offers to help Matt with installation topics.
  • Many people are interested in simple 2.5 todos, just needs a list in the wiki! (Edit: already there! - http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:SimpleTodos)
  • Interesting link for new devs: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:2.5/Doc/Developers_Quickstart

  1. Some really interesting GSOC proposal so far.

@Bart: for the love of god, please install disqus commenting system http://disqus.com/ or intense debate http://intensedebate.com/ - which was acquired by WordPress. Both available in the plugin web interface from within administration area.

The reason is that I get to leave a reply.. and after I submit, I get a lame page saying I have to log in. Unacceptable.
And if I click log in I get to another page with the actual log-in widget... and after that in the wp dashboard; so basically my comment doesn't gets posted without using "back" a couple of times and clicking submit again. Lame.

Disqus i nicer and way more popular, but might require adjusting a template to use for other page if you dont want to see some stuff related to "comments are closed".

This is an example of a fairly popular website using disqus http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/

  2. You're forced to log in because you're using the username of a registered account. We had problems with impersonations in the past (people posting like me, for example) - that's why we installed it. So I wouldn't call it 'unaccaptable' but rather a necessary evil. I'll see if I can improve it, but I have a strong dislike for putting all our user comments at a third party.

  3. Hmm, I see that Discus syncs the comments so you can always remove it again without loosing your comments. I might have to re-evaluate my opinion of them ;-) Which of the two systems do you prefer?

  4. Intense Debate is better integrated and has awesome website and awesome features.... but it just doesn't seem to work for me atm; Check out for yourself :-( http://dreadknight666.com/2009/07/dropbox-in-kde-linux/
I get "This website uses IntenseDebate comments, but they are not currently loaded because either your browser doesn't support JavaScript, or they didn't load fast enough." Let's be serious.

The disqus widget is more 'cute' and works.. also you get to see it a lot around the web. So maybe go with this one if you dont like ID or it doesn't works for you.

  5. Raceimaztion on

Is there an option somewhere I can use to get the old 2.4x object-creation menu instead of the new text-entry menu?

  6. @Raceimaztion:
PRESS SHIFT-A is right; the "Call Menu" can be accessed by pressing Shift+A.

In my opinion, it's simpler to retrain yourself to use Shift+A than it is to try to set up the spacebar to bring up the call menu. However, if you're interested in trying to restore Blender 2.4x's spacebar functionality anyway:
-Hit Ctrl+Alt+U to bring up the "User Preferences" window
    -Click on the "Input" tab
-Type "Search Menu" (without quotes) in the search bar at the top right, and hit Enter
-Change the resulting search menu control from Spacebar to something else (like Shift+A)
-Type "Call Menu" (without quotes) in the search bar, and hit Enter
-Find the Object Mode's Shift+A call menu option, and change it to Spacebar

Seems like a lot more work to me, especially if you use blender on multiple computers, but I hope this helps somebody. I've just gotten into the habit of using Shift+A, and I even use it now in Blender 2.4x.
