UK artist Ben Simonds has given some powerful insight into the making of his Pirate Captain.
Ben Simonds writes:
After learning so much from last year’s blending life competition, I couldn’t wait to test out what I’d learned since in making my entry this year. It was tremendous fun to do and I had great feedback from the BlenderArtists community as I went along.
I thought that as the competition still has a few weeks left I’d do a bit of a making of/tutorial type blog post along with the final image, to hopefully give some tips to those still working on similar projects.

That's an amazing piece of work.
Muhahaha! And more to come :D
It really is a fantastic piece of work.
Ooh interesting :) definitely gonna read that post. Character looks great too :D
looks great! the only thing i don't like so much is the shading of the eyes.
wow this character looks awesome! though I agree with Horace for his left eye, it kinda looks like glass but I like that for a pirate, yarrr!
I'd say the glassy eye is on purpose.

Great use of hair. Nice work!
Hi All, First of all Great Work, very very nice. Second I know this isn`t forum to give such questions but I`m now in blender, so I have smal question. Can Blender Internal Render Engine make a transparent shadowe recived from glass?
I really curious about how to make the cloth texture.
too bad it didn't explained.
btw, awesome detail, man!
@Drabson: No, not yet, as far as I know. You'll have to use one of the many other free renderers, like Yafaray, POV-Ray, or LuxRender. (POV-Ray is now supported natively in Blender 2.5.)

I know the glassy eyes are on purpose, but i feel unconfortable, when we do something it has to look like it is really on purpose, because it could get the look of a mistake.
the skin, the textures and the hair are great. the eyes maybe witha sss would work
Great article. Thanks for sharing your knowlege. It is a great reminder for me, about how much there is to learn about Blender. It is an amazing image.
Hey, looks different than in the blog! Much better!!! Now this definitely ist some jaw-dropping piece of work!
Thanks for help!
uauuuu!! is an amazing hair! congratulations! really beatifull art work.
hey, you finished it! :D looks awesome!
the hair is amazing
This is incredible work. The eyes look like one is made of glass, and the other has a cataract... Although, it looks more like a real *waxwork* than an actual person, which is odd.
Fantastic work on the hair buddy!!
And overall a brilliant piece.
