Since I started working on this car project, I’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback which really helped me move the project forward. It’s only fair that I return the favor and share a bit of what I learned here. (The full scene file including model, lighting, material and texture is available at my site).

WOW! That is one nice looking car. Brilliant job on the rendering and lighting. The camera angles really had me hooked.
May I ask what your rendertimes where?
WOW! That is one of the most amazing cars made in Blender that I have ever seen. Was this made for a commercial, or as a personal project?
Beautiful job, Mike. I am always empressed with the quality of your work and attention to detail and artistry.
Great work...amazing. There were some weird antialiasing artifacts in the last couple of shots though...on the grille and the line along the side of the car...hopefully there's a workaround for that.
@redbyte -> making of quote
"I also realized that a single computer is NEVER fast enough; The 40 second clip would have taken 83 days to render on a single core, but with the help of 24 cores spanning across 4 PCs, I managed to push out the video in less than 4 days."
@Mike Pan: really amazing stuff
Great job Mike, I'm amazed by the quality of the render. I must say that also the compositing, even if not so complex, gives a gig plus to the final result!
Amazing work! The lights are close to real ones and the rendering is a masterpiece!
Really good job ! I did a couple of pub for volkswagen for a studio
at montreal with XSI and i seriously be impressed with what you did in Blender.
Just one constructive comment : In the shot nine (the first time you see the car full frame) the
motionblur is weird on the wheel. Not enough motionblur i think , is
a limitation of Blender ( or you fake it with 2D vector motionblur ?) or
you want to do a slow-motion effect ?
Anyway , really really good job !
Wow. That pretty much sums it up. High profile clients are always a win for for the Blender community; to see such a fantastic effort and beautiful model reflects highly on you as an artist. Well done!
excellent
Very impressed... one of blender's best!
Wish it'd look more realistic thou.... it's too "perfect", maybe some more pos-production or other renderer??... anyways... the modeling and lighting are amazing!
Mike pan,
I have read about you in Tony Mullen's Second Book.
He only make reference to the best blender users.
So you are one of them...after all.
Sp nothing surprising then...
wow, you should work for BMW advertising or something!!
Nicely done Mike. Well nice.
Awesome job!
Very generous of you to share your blend files.
Guys like you give a good name to the community.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing the blend file.
Very nice, especially considering the state completeness of v2.5.
One criticism: at 0:32 it becomes evident that the front of the car isn't quite BMW. It is most noticeable right under the kidney grill. The hood doesn't flow with the form of the front of the car as it should. And the front air dam isn't quite right either. All of those lines flow together on the real car. On your model they exist more as separate elements.
I don't mean to be unkind, but I am a gearhead and the "Ultimate Driving Machines" are some of my all-time favorites. Props for the attempt, though. And the lighting.
I was not expecting that to be so good looking.
Wow... the rendering is excellent !!
great job!
what difference between this release of blender and the 2.49? did you need it or did you use it just to test it?
Excellent lighting, materials and rendering. :)
Detailing of that BMW needs more work and attention. Show your work at smcars.net, and I'm sure you'll get a lot of advice how to improve it. Very promising work so far, but not quite yet top of the top.
I realy like the lights of the car how did you do them so realisticly???
@johnj
Faster rendertimes. Linear workflow.
'Nuff said.
as usual...amazingly beautiful!
And again... Nobody said nothing about this god damned DOF!!! Why is every god damned newbie loves this god damned DOF so much! It makes things look like a god damned toys! Did you shown us a toy looking like a BMW? So you got it!
good job...classical and good job
it sure looks very,very "promo"!
Your work is fantastic, I never imagined that the blender could do such work as realistic.
Congratulations.
JohnJ, 2.5 has a much streamlined UI that let's me work faster, it's also a lot more faster.
Ari, I absolutely agree that it's missing details, But I ran out of patience, I'll do a better job modeling next time!
Cepreu4, Maybe I overused the shallow depth of field, but I am going for that 'cinematic' feel, and most high-end productions uses DoF a LOT, I was just mimicking that. This video without any DoF would look worse than it already is :D
Great job!!! I think you did a great job of emulating a typical BMW commercial. The two things that stood out to me were that the car needs to move a wee bit from road vibration, including tires (I think you mention this, actually) and the need for a driver silhouette as you see through the drivers window. Probably better to just composite that in afterwards. Other than that, you could totally sell me that this was the real deal. Great job with materials and lighting!
Mike Pan, DOF effect can't just appear wherever he wants to. In order to put it in place next time, you should study something about photographers job, about lenses, focus distances and all of this stuff. I would also recommend you to learn something about directing. Because now it is just a bunch of renders sewed together without any basic concept. (but may be this is just what you wanted show us)
Anyway, I want you to know that my opinion is that this is a good start, you know. So don't take it like a pointless critics, but like a constructive advices.
Good luck.
