Watch Blender 2.5 Development Happen

Bob Holcomb created a video of the Blender 2.5 SVN commits:

I created a video of all the SVN commits from the time Blender 2.5 was a branch through today using a neat visualisation program called Gource. I actually did
very little work other than pull the SVN logs, but I thought it looked cool and
should share.

Bob

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. i agree..
code_swarm is better.. it keeps the names of developers and doesn't move them around too much.. the video is hard to follow

  2. Bob. That is awesome! Looking to hook in Blender game engine to our farm and I can completely respect the problem of visualising info meaningfully. Love how the data is all laid out, so nicely done.

  3. Codeswarm is nice too, but I like the way this one seems to show the structure of the repository. Codewswarm doesn't do that as far as I know. Nice work.

  4. That was awsome!! It feels like it's alive and growing and beautifully visualized.

That Code Swarm looks like a complete cluster f**k

  5. NICE! and nice way to make the tool gource known. I applied it to my local git-repository where i work alone and it still (given the smallnes and the one-user-ness) looks nice!

  6. So if I get this straight, when someone shoots a beam in the video, does s/he make a commit to the code? Then who is that crazy dude at 12 november 2008 that stalls the entire video, buzzing around doing commits everywhere for like 20 seconds? Ton?! That's crazy!

  7. Thanks everybody!

Klesus, A beam is a commit of a particular file. That crazy guy was Blendix. He was insanely busy on Nov 12, 2008

    Cheers,

    Bob

  8. This is so beautiful! Makes me remember the virtual garden from that one character in Otherland where each plant was some sort of analytical algorithm visualizing the activity in the global web.

  9. If you like that kind of music, you might like some of the stuff on Kahvi.org, specializing in non-commercial electronica. You might have to do some sifting but you might find some the finds worth it.

Gource would be cool in 3D. Code swarm seems a little flatter. Both were less than smooth-running in full-screen.

As for the video, why bother watching porn when there's so much online cuteness to be had?

If I was a coder, I'd be tempted to influence the animation. ;)

  10. Pretty cool to watch, and pretty wild to see how much the programmers move around from one section of code to another.

    Thanks for sharing!
    Cheers
