Blender in Times Square - Dec 17th @ 7pm

Chris Coleman wrote:

My animation "The Magnitude of the Continental Divides" won Grand Prize in the Metropolis Art Prize Competition and will be playing on three of the jumbotron screens in times square on Dec. 17th at 7pm. The animation uses a combination of After Effects and Blender and I received some great help from the Blender Community during the two year animation process.

Note: I noticed that the embedded videoplayer isn't very reliable. There's a link to the full version at the end of this post.

Chris continues:

As far as the process goes, I have been utilizing Blender for a number of projects for the past several years as well as teaching it at my University. I used it for a number of details in the animation, but most notably the final scene was made purely in Blender. I was really happy with the control I had over the crows and their smoke trails and it produced the perfect and powerful ending to the whole piece.

Here is the artist statement about the video:

The Magnitude of the Continental Divides
HD Animation, 2009 with sound design by David Fodel

"The Magnitude of the Continental Divides" is an animation exploring the ways we define ourselves and our nations. It is a journey between many locations in various states of withdrawal and aggression. Borders become weaponized and damage is always dealt from afar. The individual is caught in the midst, unable to separate themselves, unable to define identity without place.

Congratulations, Chris! I hope someone will record the event and send us a video.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Fantastic vid. Gets you thinking and the visualization is beautiful. It's very helpful to see that people can realize their visions with the help of blender (... and after effects).

  2. RNS said...too political and paranoia for time of joy and peace on earth.....

Clearly there are some people which still lived in a fairy tales... anyway... (some have to be living in those fairy tales otherwise some of us would have not conscience)
    Anyway...
Your film is very interesting indeed...
    some great effect indeed.

Shame that you had to use a commercial software inline with blender to achieve this...
    so your mark is 85%.
you loose 15% for using a commercial software.

  3. Many thanks to Hannu who helped me with the smoke. I appreciate all of the remarks, and I have tried deeper integration of Blender into my work (and have done projects entirely with it) but I have developed an expertise in AfterEffects that I just cant seem to totally convert. Perhaps one day!

  4. noob question, do you mean times square in NEW YORK CITY???!! if so, THATS GOING TO BE AWESOME. if not, then im a big noob and i sound like an idiot. BUT STILL THATS AWESOME!!!!

oh yeah awesome video by the way.

  5. That site's player sucks. Please put it somewhere more reliable like Vimeo, so that I can watch it without flash-player crashing, and horrible latency.
Edit: After a while, I managed to see it without too much trouble, but I would appreciate it if in the future your work was put on at least one more reliable site.

  6. Fantasic work, such great films of a political/human nature are rare these days flows very well, its not annoying or preachy, it is clear and direct, great work

good luck with the screening and any future endevours

  7. Adore this short, the best I've seen in a long time - meant to have a quick peek but couldn't help watching quite a few times & forwarding the links to friends. Congrats!

  8. Thanks to everyone, hopefully a couple of you got to see it on the big screen. Sorry about the Babelgum player, the video is on vimeo as well, but since they gave me the big prize I figured they should get the hits. check vimeo.com/digitalcoleman for my vids including this one...
    cheers!
