Meet Sintel!

21

sintel-paintover-wip04The Durian team have released the first images of Sintel, the main character of the new Blender Open Movie Project.

What you'll see below are a first turn-table animation of the 3D model by Angela, and several iterations of a paint-over job by David. Finally, there's a hilarious 'anti-industry-standards' version of her. I can only hope she'll stay that way - I can see her swearing, spitting and scratching her buttocks ;-)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Looks good, I like her face. But maybe to spice it up a little, perhaps more of a punk-like hair style of some sort to make her more original? Something memorable and that might give the opportunity for particle physics? It's just kind of funny how decades later if you see a two-buns hairstyle, you immediately think Princess Leia, etc. Maybe a tattoo of some sort? Just a suggestion.

  2. The current style reminds me of the character design from Torchlight.

It's a game that has been developped with Ogre by ancients developpers from Blizzard North (diablo !)...

From the last Durian blog entries, it seems the Sintel movie universe is very close in spirit (toonish, colorful, with sword and guns... renaissance fantasy instead of medieval).

The character called "The Vanquisher" could look like a grown up version (or a big sister) of Sintel.

  3. I'm sorry to to the rude comment, but I don't like her name. Sintels sounds like a mobile communications company. And for what I'm reading, i'm not the only... but the name is not so important... I'm more worried about expectations put on something that is only a drawing, perhaps only a vague idea of what will defintely be. And yes, is not so so original. Perhaps and understandable script can help to get a whole idea of what to expect or to no expect?
    Regards,
    Raimon

  4. Will she kill a human because the human kicks the small dragon?
Good! Our childrens will learn great things!
I hope she will be naked for the more popularity.

    :-/

  5. Hmm... I have the feeling the character Design needs some ... character. Edges (not the beard please). I don't know, it looks quite boring at the moment. Also, the name Sintel needs serious reconsideration. Sounds a little stupid in my ears.

  6. I agree about the naming issue. Is there a reason they didn't just stick with Durian? I know so far the tradition has been to name the project after fruits (and the final title on something else), but it's a cool sounding fruit. :-)

But in all seriousness, "Sintel" does sound a little too dry and corporate (e.g. the 32-bit "Sintel" platform, "Sintel" Inside..., etc.). Maybe instead a fantasy or mythological sounding name like Aria, Cassandra (a woman from Greek lore where she had the gift of prophecy but no one believed her), Asrai (female beings that are so fragile they turn to water when captured, as a juxtaposition to the fact that the woman is a strong character), or just be tongue-in-cheek and just call her "Babe", etc.

  7. Poirut Hercules COjone on

Sintel is a great name but the character design strongly hints at a Caucasian artist trying to draw "Japanese."

  8. Ugh, I hate Manga looking drawings! This is a total no no fro me, won;t be bothering with the movie now I've seen this!
