NPR for architectural visualization with Blender 2.50 and FreeStyle

16

npr-render-architecture-blender-250-freestyle-04Allan Brito has published a mini-tutorial on how to use FreeStyle rendering in the current 2.50 builds.

Allan writes:

The integration between Blender 3D and FreeStyle render, which is capable of create great NPR images is one of the features develop as part of the SoC 2008. It is still in development by Maxime Curione, but now the development is aimed to use FreeStyle with Blender 2.50. This a useful feature for architectural visualization artists, especially if you don't want to make presentations using realistic renders. With FreeStyle we can create animations and renderings with a cartoon or sketch style.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. JOM on

I really want the FreeStyle in Blender2.5
It will help my anime characters look better (like real manga style)

  2. Hay, JOM, you don't need freestyle for that, though it would be useful. Blender Art Magazine featured a guy a couple of episodes a go that made a really nice looking anime style maid using the edge render settings. I think that it's on blender artists too, just search for Maid-san.

  3. interesante articulo...
lo mas interesante es que se pueden usar mas de un modulo del freestyle para lograr unos resultados interesantes ;)
    gracias por la nota...

  4. Can't wait for true Freestyle integration with Blender!

@iamblender:Not that this is really on topic with either NPR or Blender 2.5: Plumiferos has yet to be released...

  5. Blender team should add freestyle in the oficial blender release since it's a really useful effect library, I downloaded one of the latests builds and it didn't have freestyle integration, I don't know if it will be on the beta 2.5. I hope it will :)

  6. Nice that freestyle gets exposure. I think, however, that the article shows off the possibilities quite poorly. The styles chosen are unusable for visualization (and most things other than abstractish art). Freestyle has such a great potential, I hope people do not open this article, glance at the pictures and think "Oh, that is what freestyle does...maybe if I could do cool lineart or something....". It can. And the article should make that clear.

  7. Stupid question: How do I get back to the 'original' screen after I've rendered a scene and the renderwindow takes over? First time I've tried 2.50 - I'm a 2.4x guy :)

  8. Stop this "all-in-one device suitable for every purpose" thing and finish 2.5!!
Otherwise I fear that Blender will be an unfinished apllication like before!!

  9. @MasterJack, developers have a schedule and a real world scenario for everyday testing (durian). Projects such as this one is done by separate devs which don't make the overall progress slower at all. Also, since when Blender has been "unfinished"?

  10. rgdfhdfhdryerztetz, it means Non-Photo-Realistic. It covers the case where you are not striving forr ealism but rather something else, like artistic expression or (as is usually the case in visualization) clarity of forms. The link does not showcase this too well, I fear..
