LuxRender 0.6RC6 Released

10

luxlogoRC6 of the upcoming LuxRender version has been released.

Changes since RC5:

  • fix for the longstanding memory eating bug (this can incur a severe performance penalty on computers with lots of cores when using light groups compared to the same scene without light groups, we'd be really interested to hear about it)
  • preview rendering fix and ability to read a scene from standard input
  • port PBRT 1.4 fixes to LuxRender
  • brand new luxmerger tool to merge flm files, this should be most usefull for distributing renders without using the built-in capabilities (this is still alpha quality, let us know of any issue you might find)
  • lots of bugs and memory leaks fixes

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. folks you should be glad that lux get new features with every RC towards final v0.6 release...
however RC6 seems to be last and it turned into final release if there is no issues
so please test it properly and thoroughly and don't forget to post bugs and issues in rc release thread :)

Great to see another RC, especially with the lead developer dropping out.

For people who complain of too many RC's, Blender's RC's should be called pre-releases. Since we pretty much know we wont release them (normally they have known bugs).

Whereas other apps release RC's, if no problems are found they are released without any changes (never happens with blender).

As for adding features, if your not involved in the project its hard to tell but some features are fairly safe to add even close to release, depending on what code they touch. so I'd hope the lux devs are careful with this :)
