Freezing Moon Open Games

13

blue shroomFreezing Moon is a team of open source game enthusiasts, working hard to make two brilliant, open games!

DreadKnight, leader of Freezing Moon NPO, writes:

Hello Blenderheads, my name is Valentin Anastase, (A.K.A. Dread Knight). I'm a graphic artist/game designer and I am passionate about art, open source, Linux, and game development.

I've heard a lot of people complaining over and over again about the lack of games on Linux and have seen many enthusiasts and indie-devs creating cool little demos - which often end up abandoned - that are far from being polished and worthy to share, that is, something people could actually enjoy playing.

That's why recently I started the Freezing Moon Non-Profit Organization: we're a small team developing two free, open source, cross platform projects. We want to bring things to a whole new level of perfection and for that we're looking for talented individuals willing to work with us to fulfill our noble cause.

A brief intro to our projects:

Ancient Beast is an online multiplayer game, a hybrid combining real time strategy with role-playing elements, based on an exciting fantasy universe infused with rich Norse mythology, featuring 9 distinctive realms containing more than 50 creatures to master or defeat, each with it's own unique and exciting set of upgrades and evolutions that are brought to life by nicely crafted 3d graphics.

Dark Shift is a Sci-Fi multiplayer action FPS, taking place in a post-apocalyptic future, featuring 12 playable unique characters divided in 4 distinctive classes, each having to master it's own unique hunting and survival skills and strategies.

If you take game development seriously, are good at something useful in the field of game development, are eager to contribute to something spectacular; if you want to learn more, meet fascinating people, and have fun, then don't hesitate to get in touch with us at: [email protected]

A note from Banor: Being part of this team has been an excellent learning experience, and whether you do concept art, model, rig, animate, or even voice acting, you can be a part of the Freezing Moon team!

  1. Good luck guys! I'm an indie game developer as well (working on some titles right now, and using blender for asset pipeline). Your projects are very amitious, I'm sure this will be great games.

  2. oh my! the sculpt is awesome for an indie game. although i was hoping for single player story based games since this is missing in Linux except for handful games like wesnoth. good luck guys.

  3. Hi !
It look very interesting, for the project itself and the future games, I'm sure Dark Shift and the team are well intentioned...

But where is the license ? Is it GPL ? Creative common ?
I did searched the website and the forum post with no response...

Very nice artwork, it looks quite professional and polished.

Although, the creators where talking about the problem of unpolished, unfinished and/or abandoned games (demos) by indie devs.

Those games actually need a non-profit organization with a janitor role.

Once a developer has finished a game, he or she could let it be maintained,(stored) at Freezing Moon.

Open Moon could then keep the game and/or any other material that the author wishes.

Maybe even the author could give the right to Freezing Moon to continue maintenaince themselve with the people Freezing Moon picks.
Or the author could let Freezing Moon continue development and even set some goals.

Freezing Moon could act as a janitor, not doing actual work but provide a clear communication point for people who have made games and people who like to build upon earlier efforts.

If a developer doesn't want to continue his/her game in development, he/she could give it to Freezing Moon, maybe with some goals that he/she would like to be met.
Can't provide for those features them selves (because of e.g. time constraints, knowledge about certain techniques, software's, other...)

Of course the people of Freezing Moon team could also help projects themselves, if they are interested of course.
Or even work with some volunteers that are interested in the same project.
Projects could be completely maintained by volunteers.
The author could even register his/her game on Open Moon to get help of volunteers while working on his/her project maintaining the possibility to set goals for the project and realize their vision. (That seems fair enough. The original author keeps the right to decide what happends.)

If there are trouble's between visions, then the consensus should be to fork for avoiding arguing between creators. (Arguing could result in serious hurt for the game.)
Or if possible to split the project in two parts, one vision-specific one not vision-specific. (e.g. same rendering engine is ok but people want different content. The content could be split in two and the same game engine be used.)

Wouldn't this be a good idea?
    A janitor for abandoned games.
A communication point for creators continue upon each others work.

  5. Open games? For non-Windows PCs? That are well-made and fun to play? Did I wake up in some alternate universe or something?

I wish Freezing Moon the best of luck. This is definitely an exciting prospect, and something I'd like to hear about again, further down the road!

  6. I am the sculptor of that flayed model. DreadKnight forgot to credit me, :-P

If you want to know more about how I did it--check us out on irc.freenode.net @2 #freezingmoon

  7. Thanks for the wishes guys, but keep in mind that those alone won't get the game projects done :D

@yagraph licensing is in the documentation; basically you can share, look, learn, modify, enjoy, but not sell / include in a closed source project; I will expand the info in the documentation regarding licensing and make it more clear (as well as other things given time)

@rgdfhdfhdryerztetz interesting, but it's likely I wouldn't have the 'vision and motivation' of the initial owner of the project. Anyway, I have more than enough work to do on the current projects and resources are very limited. If I'll even get through with them, someday I'll probably work on some more, but different genres.

@Gryphon good things need to happen from time to time :P putting myself on the line on this one, even quit my day job and it's influencing my social life, hopefully we'll get a (lead) programmer good with BGE and speed things up

    @n00bhaxor too bad :P gl

@dusty I like your gallery, looking forward to have you in my team; drop by the IRC channel anytime; I hope things settle down for you

    @SeanJM poor you :D

  8. @rgdfhdfhdryerztetz:

That is a relatively good idea. I wonder how many great projects ended up lost forever because someone let the web hosting run out and the server was cleared. I've followed links to "great projects" before and found them to be dead with the domain for sale and no sign that the project was continued at a different domain.

So if old or semi-completed project could be stored in one central location that would be good. But then again that is what SourceForge is for.

  9. Good point, Experiment Garden. However, if I am correct, SourceForge is for open source computer programs, not game/film projects.
